25.01.2022 Friends in Reid ACT, do you have a project in mind that could use a heritage grant?

21.01.2022 Our Googong house is a finalist in the 2018 HIA Lawn Solutions Australian GreenSmart Awards! Congratulations to Tom Holmes and 360 Building Solutions for their commitment to building sustainable design. This home required extremely careful planning to fit onto the compact corner block, face north, and still have all the amenity of an adaptable four bedroom family home on a budget. ... Many architectural tricks were used to minimise wasted space and materials, from multi-purpose rooms, right down to planning the shortest plumbing and ducting runs. Under slab insulation separates the home from the cold earth and saves on concrete. External insulation, building wraps and cross ventilation reduce the need for heating and cooling. Recycled materials not only look good but reduce the carbon footprint of the home. The rainwater tank and many more features are hidden, but this home is quietly working very hard for its occupants and the environment. Winners will be announced at 1pm on Tuesday 4th September. https://www.facebook.com/pg/hartfiel.com.au/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1120283904774814

17.01.2022 Solar powered billboards. Would be great to use on our major roads to redirect traffic before a traffic jam! Would prevent a lot of pollution too.

17.01.2022 If you are interested to see inside my architectural design of the Torrens Early Learning Centre, come along on Saturday. There's a tour and a discussion with Harley Truong about the Passive House details.

16.01.2022 Two of our homes are featured in Sustainable House Day - Gundaroo and Curtin. Have a look through these wonderful entries

16.01.2022 What is the difference between a Passive House/Passivhaus and a Solar Passive house? Solar Passive housing has been around since cave people. A cave that opens to the north (or south in the the northern hemisphere) is a primitive example of solar passive design. It lets in the low winter sun, but has an overhang to cut out the high summer sun. The rock acts as a radiator that stores the warmth of the sun or a fire and releases it on a cold night. If the rock is covered in ea...rth, it has a decent amount of insulation too. It may even get a good summer breeze. Sadly some ancient cave homes would outperform many modern houses. Humans love to reinvent the wheel, and not always for the better, as you can see by the number of houses that do not face north. Passive House is a modern improvement on Solar Passive Design. Instead of being built of heavy thermal mass, Passive Houses are "light and tight", like an Esky. It is still very important to face the house north and limit glass on the south, east and west. Shading and ventilation are key because heat can build up quickly. Passivhaus is very scientific. It requires that energy use must not exceed 15kWh/m2, or 0.6 air changes per hour. Compare this to the minimum required 6 star house in Canberra, which would be hard pressed to get below 5 air changes per hour. In poorly designed older housing, you can see up to 30 air changes per hour! Passive House design doesn't cost more, it just takes careful planning, and is well worth the saving on energy bills. 16.01.2022 Earthship homes made of recycled materials. Have you thought of using recycled materials in your home? Many of our clients are doing just that.

15.01.2022 I really recommend going along to this tour. Fantastic houses every year.

15.01.2022 Welcome to the new Facebook page! Come inside and have a look around...

13.01.2022 An interesting article if you are considering the cost of an energy efficient fridge.

12.01.2022 Why pay up to $25,000 for demolition, when you can sell the tiles right off the roof? These clients have done a brilliantly quick job of recycling their old house, salvaging the items they need, and selling the materials they don't need on Gumtree. Buyers are often happy to dismantle sheds and other structures to save you the trouble. Good for the environment and good for the budget!

11.01.2022 I'm excited about the release of this book, the result of the hard work of my fellow APHA members. It features my first commercial Passive House building, the Torrens Early Learning Centre (p78). It is a great example that we can and should build better quality schools and houses in Canberra. You will soon be able to buy a hardcopy, or you can download the book here: https://lnkd.in/gAhg5Nk #expectmore #passivehouse #passivhaus #architecture #apha #australianpassivehouseassociation

10.01.2022 Work in progress! Two dual occupancies in a strict heritage area of Braidwood. #miningboom

07.01.2022 What do you think of this chevron parquet floor with a natural oil finish? Better Timber Flooring have done a flawless job. The Earthwood timber is various Australian Red species reclaimed from the Gladstone Pipeline project that would have been burnt otherwise. Amazing work guys, thankyou!

07.01.2022 A housewarming party to celebrate fast progress on this coast house. Great work team! #beachhouse

07.01.2022 It was a wonderful surprise and honour to win two awards in my first ever HIA Awards. In conjunction with builder 360 Building Solutions, our Googong home won the Small Lot Housing and Custom Built Home $350,001-$500,000 categories. We were also a finalist in the 2018 HIA Lawn Solutions Australian GreenSmart Awards and overall Custom Built Home.... A big thankyou to craftsman Tom Holmes, Kate Jermyn for the beautiful styling, and the home owners for allowing us to enter the home. It is a privilege to work on such inspiring projects and a lovely acknowledgement that all the blood, sweat, and going the extra mile for sustainability was well worth it.

05.01.2022 Another beach house under construction. Retro design to match the front house/extension. Flood plain, bushfire zone, dual occupancy, subdivision, no problem! Love a challenge. So grateful for wonderful clients and all the support in 2017.

05.01.2022 This is a recently completed design in Googong. A high performing home with beautiful construction by Tom Holmes and 360 Degree Building Solutions.

04.01.2022 Our Michelago house is almost finished. Check out the amazing views from every window. The owners were able to escape the bushfire smoke because the building is so airtight. We are thinking about showing this house and a few others at Sustainable House Day on Sunday 20th of September.
