25.01.2022 This article is a little heartbreaking to read. Unfortunately, this scam is not limited to the people or accounting firm mentioned in the article. It's happening elsewhere. If you or anyone you know ever considers becoming a director of a company, I recommend you have a really good think about whether that's a good idea. Once you're a director, you're expected to know what's going on with the company and you must make sure it lodges and pays its taxes. If you don't, you can ...become personally liable for some of the taxes is doesn't pay. Is it really worth the risk?
24.01.2022 Just in time for #ScamsWeek19. Last week I received a call from someone pretending to be from the ATO. As a tax lawyer, I recognised the scam immediately but kept them on the phone for 25 minutes so I could learn their tricks first hand. And now I've made a video about it
17.01.2022 This week I saw my first letter from the ATO to a business owner, denying the JobKeeper entitlement for several employees. This business has been paying employees $1,500 a fortnight since JobKeeper started, even though their business was closed during some of that time. They have now been told they won’t get that money reimbursed by the ATO. The really shocking thing is that I am told that the ATO asked very few questions of the employer when reviewing the eligibility. Also, ...their letter gave almost no explanation for denying the eligibility, making it difficult to understand the decision. There’s a review process, but no doubt there will also be several sleepless nights ahead for this business owner who is tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket for the time being.
14.01.2022 If you're paying your BAS today, please double check your Payment Reference Numbers. The ATO seem to have randomly changed at least some of them (including mine), without notification. This means that if you pay using the details already saved in your bank account, your payment might not be allocated correctly. I've been trying to sort this out with the ATO via the ATO Community Portal, but they're moving very slowly (after initially denying they'd made any changes).
13.01.2022 The general interest charge rate imposed by the ATO has been set at 7.91% for the March 2020 quarter. This is the lowest its been in the last 20 years. And just in case you're wondering how this rate is calculated, I've written a short article explaining the whole thing. You can read about it here:

12.01.2022 It's Scams Awareness Week, so I'm reposting this to help you recognise a real ATO call from a scammer. Also, I got one of my very own scam calls from the "ATO" last week - I kept them on the phone for 25 minutes to find out their dirty tricks. I'll be posting a video about it soon!
09.01.2022 So this isn't tax related, but this scheme may be helpful for any residential tenants in South Australia who are struggling due to COVID-19. Under this scheme, tenants are eligible for State Government rent relief if they: - are either receiving JobKeeper or JobSeeker payments, and... - have less than $5,000 in savings, and - are paying more than 30% of their current income in rent. Read more about it on the Department of Human Services website.
07.01.2022 If you have questions for the ATO regarding the various COVID-19 stimulus options, start here first. Their lines are super busy right now, but you might find your answer on this page and save yourself the long hold time. Or you can give me a buzz and I'll help you if I can.
07.01.2022 Getting good results for my clients is always rewarding, but today I got the icing on the cake. A grateful client just dropped in to deliver a beautiful bottle of wine as a thank you for my help. I'll certainly enjoy celebrating our win! Cheers
07.01.2022 The rate of interest charged on overdue tax debts changes every quarter, to reflect what's been going on in the market. The ATO has just announced the rate for the next quarter - unsurprisingly, it's the lowest it has been for over 20 years.
05.01.2022 Wondering about the ATO's general interest charge? Here's everything you need to know about it - including how it's calculated, how it's taxed, how to ask for a remission of the general interest charge and more.
01.01.2022 New ATO scam update: This scam involves a text message, asking you to click on a link and provide personal information so you can receive a refund. The text looks like it has been sent by the ATO and may even appear in the same message feed as genuine ATO messages. This is a scam, designed to steal your information (such as bank details and tax file number). This information can then be used for fraudulent schemes such as taking out loans or store credit in your name. The ...ATO will never send a message asking you to click a link. Real ATO messages may include a phone number for you to call, which you should always verify on the ATO website before making contact. If you're concerned that something may be a scam, you can call the ATO on 1800 008 540 to verify. See more
