24.01.2022 Spring is in the air, & ever changeable in the Mountains. We enjoyed our day at Tarana Markets yesterday & the wide skies today as we worked the farm. Wonderful isn't it? Hope you're enjoying the school holidays!
23.01.2022 Parsnips are a deliciously sweet veg most commonly used in bakes, soups & as a mash. Have you ever made deep fried parsnip chips? The family will adore them! Tonight we made the parsnip & cauliflower soup to ward off the winter chill. Recipe is in this week's newsletter. Hope you're enjoying the holidays!

19.01.2022 Juicy, sweet mandarins are a fave snack for many children, and all of us at HH, too! Rich in vit C, they also contain vit A, dietary fibre & minerals like potassium & manganese. It's peak season, so enjoy them raw, use them in desserts or make into a sauce & pair with seafood. They're also suitable to freeze!

17.01.2022 Beautiful skies and cool night air. What a relief!
17.01.2022 How was your childhood experience of eating Brussels sprouts? These little fellas are totally moreish when they're properly cooked. Here's a take on the recipe in our newsletter this week. I was out of parmesan but had some bacon. Don't be scared of the dark, they're tender & delicious!
16.01.2022 For everyone interested in the chicken houses Michael is busy building all over the Mountains, here's some more detail!
16.01.2022 Mint is a wonderfully versatile plant--in your summer salads, in jugs of iced water, or a refreshing tea. At Hartley Harvest we put the mint in the guinea pig cages and the chookhouses. The guinea pigs love to eat the young leaves but it also gives the cage a fresh smell. The chooks also get the mint to help keep down the lice. As a bonus, mice don't seem to like the smell! However, mint is a plant that will spread if not contained in a pot. They have a creeping root system ...which is invasive and almost impossible to kill off. We have had mint escape into one of our growing tunnels. To get rid of it we trimmed the mint back to the ground then covered the ground with brown cardboard (which we have recycled from generous customers). The brown cardboard needs to be overlapped to ensure that all the mint runners are fully covered. Leave it for about 4 weeks and then take a look--the runners should have all died. Do not remove the cardboard but put fresh compost on top and start planting with other crops. Do you have a favourite recipe featuring mint? We'll share one of our favourite salad recipes later this week. We'd love to share yours too! Mixed Seedling Packs We still have a few left. They contain leeks, beetroot, coral lettuce, flat leaf parsley and fennel. Tarana Markets Tarana Markets will be on Sunday December 20. We'll be there come rain or shine. Have a good week!

13.01.2022 Home Gardening! Iceburg lettuce is often used in salads but did you know it can also be used in soups, wraps, sandwiches and grilled? You can grow iceburg lettuce in the mountains all year round. In the summer plant in partially shaded beds or in pots. Lettuce needs well drained soil and loads of organic matter. They are heavy feeders and need to grow rapidly, so use liquid fertiliser to encourage their growth. Don't forget to keep them well watered and well mulched as they h...ave shallow roots. If the soil dries out they may go to seed quickly. We have iceburg lettuce now ready to plant $0.50 each and mixed seedling packs are back!

10.01.2022 Apparently last night was the final eve to see the planets Jupiter & Saturn in line with the moon. Did you see it? It was pretty cloudy over the farm last night but we caught glimpses. What an amazing world!
08.01.2022 Home gardeners, if you're growing kale you'll notice the kale is going to seed, but don't pull it out! Cut off the stems and florets and cook them-- they are delicious. The plants will respond by producing more side shoots that you can harvest later when regrown. Kale flowers are tender and delicious when eaten raw or cooked. The stems of the kale flowers are sweet and crunchy and not often seen at the farmers markets, so use your flowers! Cook them like the way you would coo...k broccoli. The flowers pair beautifully with lemon, capers, chilli, garlic, ginger and black bean sauce, & best of all, they only take a few minutes to cook. Kale Flowers with Garlic, Chilli and Lemon A bunch of kale flowers (broccoli flowers can be used instead) 2-4 tablespoons olive oil 1 tsp minced garlic 1 lemon (zest and juice) 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes salt and pepper cooked pasta ( optional) feta ( optional) Cut the stems with the florets into pieces. Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add the olive oil & when it shimmers add the garlic. Add the kale flowers and the stems. Add the lemon zest and sprinkle in the red pepper flakes over the kale. When the kale flowers are tender (about 2-4 minutes) season with salt and pepper. Squeeze lemon juice over the kale. Serve with hot cooked pasta. Drizzle with additional olive oil and lemon juice. If you like, sprinkle feta over the dish. Enjoy!
