25.01.2022 Catastrophic fire danger is now forecast for the Greater Sydney and Greater Hunter areas on Tuesday 12 November 2019, due to worsening weather conditions. High ...temperatures, strong winds and low humidity are forecast, making conditions dangerous. Catastrophic is the highest level of bush fire danger. Homes are not designed to withstand a fire under these conditions. If a fire starts and takes hold during Catastrophic fire danger conditions, lives and homes will be at risk. Advice for people in areas of Catastrophic fire danger include: Avoid bush fire prone areas. A safer area may be a large town or city, shopping centres or facilities well away from bushland areas. Schools in identified high risk areas will be closed. Schools will notify affected students. Start making arrangements now. If you are unable to leave, identify a safe location which may be nearby. This may include a Neighbourhood Safer Place. Large areas of the state are also forecast to experience Severe and Extreme fire danger. This includes in the north coast and northern NSW areas, where there is a large number of fires already burning. These fires will not be contained in time and will threaten lives and properties. Based on latest forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology, the following fire danger ratings are expected on Tuesday. These are subject to change as forecasts are updated: Catastrophic Greater Sydney and Greater Hunter (including the Blue Mountains and Central Coast areas) Extreme North Coast, Illawarra/Shoalhaven, Central Ranges, Northern Slopes and North Western Severe Far North Coast, New England, Far South Coast, Southern Ranges, Lower Central West Plains This is the first time since new Fire Danger Ratings were introduced in 2009 that Catastrophic fire danger has been forecast for Sydney. A statewide total fire ban has been declared for all areas of NSW for all of Monday and Tuesday.
24.01.2022 We are flattered by the recent idea to honour firefighters with coloured ribbon on house fronts.. but wed like to say a little something. Whilst it is true th...at there have been thousands of firefighters in some horrific conditions battling to save people, animals and buildings, we simply cannot and should not take the credit for what is truly a mix of superheroes from all services. We couldnt do our job safely if it werent for our guardian angels at NSW Ambulance that have assisted in rendering help to firefighters and victims. We couldnt have faced the fires alone without our heroes at NSW Rural Fire Service who have battled tirelessly and given up their own wages to help volunteer The incredible work of NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service who have helped care for animals and their assistance with fighting fires The mammoth effort of NSW SES workers that have worked tirelessly to restore safety to communities and clear hazardous debris The heroic men and women in NSW Police Force that have assisted in many mammoth roles including helping evacuate and direct traffic and respond to incidents The amazing people from Defence Australia who have supported all agencies from air, land and sea in numours rolls and capabilities. The teams from Forestry Corporation of NSW working extremely hard fighting the fires and managing over 2million hectars of state forest. Our interstate agencies that have come to help and battled their own disasters at home The partners, children, friends and families of all firefighters that had to say farewell with fear and pride to a loved one and hold down the fort whilst they were gone The many every day heroes that have pushed for donations for victims and donated time, equipment or money to assist those in need The wonderful unseen warriors at our communications centers who have the difficult job of determining where resources need to go when resources really needed to be everywhere at once The people from all over the world that have come to help from NZ, Canada, USA & more The executive managment team and incident controllers at Fire and Rescue NSW who have helped allocate resources and ensure our safety, and of course the incredible RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons and his team who has gone above and beyond in doing everything possible to keep everyone informed and safe and showed true leadership The behind the scenes people who update apps, warnings and Facebook pages who have worked tirelessly to keep information coming in times of need This is by NO means an exhaustive list, please forgive us for not mentioning everyone. We are sure there are SO many more people to thank, so wed like to leave this post open for all to share and tag someone individually or an organisation that is doing incredible things and let them know we all appreciate it. 21.01.2022 COASTIES CREATE FOOD FOR WILDLIFE Hundreds of volunteers have come together on the Central Coast, led by Central Coast Wildlife Search and Rescue to create... food for native animals displaced by the bushfire at Charmhaven. When animals survive fire, they move to different areas, which may not have the right food available to them, particularly in drought conditions. Australian Walkabout Wildlife Park suggests these tips for those wanting to put out food: for kangaroos and wallabies, the safest food is grass pellets (pony pellets, horse fattener pellets, macropod pellets). Please do NOT feed animal pellets that contain seeds. Pellets do break down in the rain, so put them under cover e.g. in hollowed out trees or under rock shelves or under fallen logs. A range of vegetables, inclu. dark green vegetables and rolled oats are a good substitute too, dont break down in the rain, and will give them more variety. And weetbix (low sugar wheat biscuits) are excellent. Native foods (flowers, leaves, grasses) are best, but with the drought and fires theyre in short supply. Different kinds of possums have different types of gut systems. Fruit is dangerous for ringtail possums. If they eat fruit they commonly get "bloat", a paralysed gut which is painful and life threatening. This is because their gut is designed for the same food as a koala. So if you are putting out food for possums and you cant find enough native food for them, only feed non-sweet vegetables (much the same as for kangaroos). Feeding nuts should be ok. Please remember fruit and birdseed are dangerous for kangaroos and possums. Please dont feed these anywhere where there may be other climbing or hopping wildlife (which is almost anywhere). Putting it high in a tree is still risky. Possums can reach it, and they can drop it on the ground where kangaroos will eat it. What birds need most desperately is water. Most birds can fly long distances to new places to find food, as long as they have water. Water, like shown in the photos (with a stick/log for animals to climb in and out) is important, too.

18.01.2022 Dog Poisoned by the Diffuser Saturday night I got home late and my dog didnt recognize me. Being a nanny I thought I woke him up and he was having a night terr...or. Sunday, he was still acting weird. I realized that I had been running my new diffuser and decided to turn it off. Sunday afternoon, he was feeling better. Today at work, my dog sitter said that he wouldnt come out from under the bed. It was very odd as he is a happy dog. I came from work early and again, he was very confused about who I was. So I took him to emergency vet. It turns out that the tea tree oil I was using in the diffuser is toxic for dogs. Thankfully the test showed that his liver was ok but we werent out of the woods yet. He was given fluids under his skin to get the toxins out. The vet and the poison control are saying that they see these cases often now that the popularity of essential oil is growing. Please make sure that the essential oils you are burning are not toxic for your pets. Here is a list of essential oils not to use if you have a dog at home Anise (Pimpinella anisum) Birch (Betula) Bitter Almond (Prunus dulcis) Boldo (Peumus boldus) Calamus (Acorus calamus) Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) Cassia (Cassia fistula) Chenopodium (Chenopodium album) Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) Garlic (Allium sativum) Goosefoot (Chenopodium murale) Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) Hyssop (Hyssopus sp. with the exception of Decumbens) Juniper (Juniperus sp. with the exception of Juniper Berry) Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) Mustard (Brassica juncea) Oregano (Origanum vulgare) Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) Red or White Thyme Rue (Ruta graveolens) Santolina (Santolina chamaecyparissus) Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) Savory (Satureja) Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) Terebinth (Pistacia palaestina) Thuja (Thuja occidentalis) Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) Please share this story as it may save someones precious furry family member!

11.01.2022 Hi everyone! Weve had a little influx of new faces to our page so I just wanted to welcome you all and let you know a little bit about what we offer. My husb...and Tristan and I started a micro flower farm in the Kanimbla Valley four years ago. We grow flowers naturally without the use of any nasty chemicals. We are dedicated to looking after, respecting and nurturing our soil, bees, and our land as a whole and hope to leave this place in a better condition than we found it. We are passionate about providing our local community a healthier alternative to the sprayed, chemical laden flowers, that are unfortunately hard to avoid these days. I have been a florist for over 20years and personally wanted to no longer expose myself or my customers to these chemicals that arent very well regulated in the cut flower industry. There are a rise in many thoughtful, eco friendly florists and farmers out there though, that are beginning to make a stand and I feel its only going to get easier to source organic flowers in the future. It takes time. We are really proud to be a part of this change. We sell directly to the public. Orders can be made via our website or you can pick up some of our flowers at our two Mountains outlets - the Blue Mountains Food Co-op & Lyttletons Stores. They are stocked fresh for the weekend on a Friday afternoon. We deliver our bouquets and edible flowers between Hartley and Hazelbrook or pick up can be arranged 6 days a week at Wentworth Falls free of charge. Most weeks we plan on offering a weekly special so keep your eyes out for a bargain! Thank you for joining us here. If you have any questions please dont hesitate to send me an email at [email protected] Celine

08.01.2022 Editors Note: for those of you reading this post for the first time- thank you and welcome. The fires have been raging in Our fair land for weeks now. I have s...ince posted numerous patterns to my recent posts here on Facebook Including an updated infographic on what supplies are needed from The Rescue Collective. I encourage you all to follow and join them as well as the Animal Rescue Collective and Animal Rescue Collective Craft Guild to continue to receive advice on what is needed most and locations to which you can send your handmade supplies. I am still happy to act as a collection point though if easier. My address is PO Box 126 Balgowlah NSW 2093. Lets spread some love and light over this suffering nation. THANKYOU Knitters of the World - Australia needs your help. Over 1 million hectares of land have been burning in 300 fires across NSW and Queensland. Much of this is critical Koala Habitat - a species that is now considered functionally extinct. Populations have been decimated and those who have survived are badly injured. Its important to acknowledge that so many other animals have perished in these devastating fires. So too have people and hundreds of homes leaving families with nothing. Our hearts are heavy and so many of us are in a state of bewilderment and anger at the lack of political will to address the broader issues at play here. But thats a conversation for another time and platform. Right now, we need to do what we can to make a difference where we can. There has been a call out for knitted, crocheted Joey pouches and sewn pouch liners for our beloved kangaroos, and other natives such as possums and wombats, to help in the treatment of burns. Email me for the patterns at [email protected]. I have a fantastic PDF I can send you. No DMs please. I am happy to be the point of collection and youll find my postal address in my Bio information. Please show our global leaders what can be achieved when we act as a collective consciousness and show compassion and love for those in need. We are all one. We are all connected. Lets be the light for those who have forgotten to see. Please share this post or tag the crafter in your life so that they can help spread the word. Our beautiful precious Aussie wildlife needs your love and care. 01.01.2022 One of our hives has been poisoned. This was a thriving hive last week. Now they wont survive a month. This happened because someone sprayed their flowering g...ardens with an herbicide/pesticide. Please abstain from spraying, but if you do, dont spray the actual flowers. It not only kills honey bees, but any pollinator visiting your garden. And it moves up the food chain- birds die because they eat those pollinators. This is so sad. Please spread the word. See more
