16.01.2022 I feel that the bell siphon is an outdated technology that was more of use when pumps and timer switches were expensive compared to what you pay for them nowadays. The advantage of the bell siphon is that it allows one pump to be connected to multiple grow beds. The disadvantages of the bell siphon are 1) Less reliable than timer switches as you constantly have to adjust the rate of water flow into the grow beds, The smallest amount of gunk in the pipes or wear in the pump c...hanges the flow rate into the bed and they need adjusting to get the bell siphon working again. most well working bell siphons need adjusting once or twice a week to keep them going. 2) bell siphons have a fixed cycle rate that cannot be changed. With a Timer switch you can change how often they flood and drain. Greens like lettuce love constant cycling but larger plants like tomatoes don't like so much water and can get root rot. When I grow tomatoes I set them to 15min on and 45min off and they grow a lot faster than a bell siphon that cycles about every 15min. 3) Timer switches can be set to come on more during the day and less at night if you have solar power and it is cheaper to run it that way. 4)If you have multiple grow beds connected to one sump, the sump doesn't need to be as large if you use timer switches as you can synchronize them and reduce how much the sump fluctuates. 5)If you have multiple grow beds using multiple smaller pumps to move the same amount is actually a lot more efficient than one larger pump. Larger pumps create more turbulence waste more electricity than smaller pumps. 6) They are more expensive to make than timer switch setups . Having said this, Bell siphon are fun to get working and if you should get tired of them they can easily be converted timer switch outlets. Kind Regards. Shane See more
