25.01.2022 Kingfish Stock Assessment Over the past few days DPI has been contacted by anglers seeking more info about work being done by DPI fisheries scientists to assess... kingfish stocks. It’s great to see so many fishos are interested in the science used to assess stocks of key species such as kingies. Here are the facts about the kingfish stock assessment work, which we hope will help provide a better understanding of the process being undertaken. First up, it’s important to realise that the kingfish work is part of a national fish stock assessment, which is currently underway to inform the Status of Australian Fish Stock (SAFS) reports. These reports, which are managed by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, are produced collaboratively by more than 100 scientists around the country and are carried out every two years. The next reports are due by the end of this year. Assessment of stock status is undertaken to understand the health of each fish stock, which in the SAFS process includes more than 100 species and 400+ different stocks of fish. This biennial process helps to inform the science used to develop fisheries management approaches around Australia. Kingfish is one of the key species in SAFS (see https://fish.gov.au/report/218-Yellowtail-Kingfish-2018 for info) that will be updated as part of the current national stock assessment process. The main reason there is a more detailed focus on the kingfish assessment this year is because uncertainty in the 2018 SAFS reports led to the overall east coast kingfish stock (which includes Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia) being classified as undefined. There were also some concerns over what that 2018 data was showing for the NSW portion of the stock. Genetic analyses have shown the kingfish population in WA to be genetically distinct from the kingies found on the eastern (NSW) and southern/central (Victoria, SA) coasts or in New Zealand waters. As part of a strategy to improve science-based data in NSW, a stakeholder workshop was planned to bring together species experts (from both science and fishing backgrounds) to address the data deficiencies and get a better determination of the stock status of kingfish. Unfortunately, this workshop had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, initial stakeholder engagement with these species experts has now involved remote discussions (phone, emails etc). One aspect of this engagement has involved DPI scientists modelling historical kingfish catches by talking to a number of highly experienced kingfish stakeholders across the recreational, charter, and commercial fishing sectors to ask about any changes these fishers may have observed over time in the kingfish fishery. This historical catch data is from the 1950s up to 2018. The purpose of this research was to check with fishers who have a good understanding of historical catches (many of those surveyed had over 40+ years targeting kingfish) and see whether the historical catch data passed the "pub test". In other words, did this historical catch data match up with what fishers who were targeting kingfish back in key periods of fishing activity in the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s actually experienced? For example, the questions researchers asked in the survey included, Did the historical catch data correspond to any changes you observed in the fishery?, What are your experiences of the fishery?, What are the major management changes that have affected harvest in the sector you know most about?, Has technology improved the ability to catch kingfish?" and "Has the ability to access kingfish changed? While this work is only a small part of the overall stock assessment process, the historical perspectives provided by fishers who were on the water at these key times over the past 40 or so years can be useful in helping validate the available catch record data on kingfish. This, in turn, can help improve the outcomes of the national stock assessment process for kingfish by ensuring the science is as good as we can get it. We hope this information about the work being done on kingfish provides some useful background on the national stock assessment process. To be honest, it’s pretty techo stuff but it is vitally important work as it allows scientists to better understand for the health of our fisheries. If you’d like more info, check out the Status of Australian Fish Stock Reports webpage at www.fish.gov.au. When it comes to kingie fishing here in NSW, it’s important to note that no decisions have been made by the NSW Government on any future management arrangements for this species. Any future management would be informed by the best available science. If you’d like further info, feel free to email us at [email protected]. We’ll be happy to help.

23.01.2022 This is the link to have your say regarding council proposals to do away with the annual licence sites. https://yoursay.macleay.nsw.gov.au/hat-head-holiday-park

23.01.2022 Great day yesterday for our open comp weigh in with over 100 nominations! Massive thankyou to Diawa for donating the very impressive kids prizes! Thankyou to Anthony Strati from Diawa and Sue Xuereb for making this happen! ... Thankyou also to Andrew Mealing and the mother club for all your support yesterday!

21.01.2022 Would you try this?

21.01.2022 Is there anybody, preferably a Hat Head local, who would like to take on the role of co-administrator of this page to help provide the fishing related news, views and information about Hat Head and the Macleay Valley? Let us know in comments or messenger.

20.01.2022 Fishing comp 7th-8th November is ON!! Weigh in 12 noon Sunday 8th. BUT THERE ARE A NUMBER OF STRICT COVID 19 RULES WHICH MUST BE ADHERED TO...... The fishing club will have a Covid plan and a Covid Marshall will be in attendance to ensure the club's licence is not jeopardized.... 1. Entry to the club is ONLY through the front door where you must sign in by scanning your membership card. You will also have to scan your card when you leave. You must not access the back area via the bowling green route. 2. The side gate will be closed but if you have a large fish box, you may leave it at the gate and you can get access to it for the weigh in. 3. Everybody must be seated during the weigh in with only the weighmaster and the person weighing in the fish standing at the table. No wandering, no mingling... once you have found a seat, that's where you should stay. 4. There will be no BBQ but the restaurant will be open with normal Covid safe dining rules to apply. Hopefully the weather Gods will be kind and the fish will be hungry Good luck and above all.... Enjoy Yourself.

19.01.2022 Balance of results of December comp. Weighing in a big jewie is always going to make the news and so it is with the 19.7 Kg specimen landed by Tony Jobson which headlines the BR&E section. Other results in BR&E were Brad Short flathead, Peter Hemmings bream and trevally, Isaiah Hoskings tarwhine, Jane Egar whiting, Isaac Cook tailor.... Peter Britten led the way in the Deep Sea section with a nice 2.88 Kg snapper. Other results were Max Snodgrass pigfish, Chris Snodgrass pearl perch, Bruce Penson flathead, Trevor Ball morwong. Once again congratulations to Neeve Rushby for taking out the Wheat Bix Wheatley trophy with best whiting in the sub juniors. A further reminder the next comp will be on 2nd and 3rd January Covid permitting. This competition is open to all comers. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

13.01.2022 Ten years ago we had a lot to say about Grey Nurse sharks in particular. Here is your chance to tell DPI your thoughts about shark mitigation, or if we need any mitigation at all.

13.01.2022 Covid19 rules....... That is why there has been no fishing comps for some months and why we still won't have one in August (would have been this coming weekend). Our committee has been working their backsides off trying to come up with a feasible and legal plan to hold a weigh in. There is no problem catching the fish but managing crowd control, registrations, social distancing, staying seated and not jeopardising the club's licence is simply in the too hard box at this stage. We know you are all anxious to start competing again and be assured the committee will endeavour to find a way to run the September comp.

12.01.2022 Sorry but....... October comp cancelled due to it being a long weekend and an open comp. Mother club is concerned about number of possible nominations and their families attending. Might be too difficult to adhere to Covid restrictions. We are very keen to put measures in place for November as long as NSWFCA is on board. Members don't forget you can still weigh in fish you think will beat the annual board.

11.01.2022 Caught a bigun? Weigh ins for the annual board are now permitted if an authorised weigh person is available.Caught a bigun? Weigh ins for the annual board are now permitted if an authorised weigh person is available.

11.01.2022 OPEN COMP THIS WEEKEND... ALL WELCOME! (no need to be a member) WEIGH IN MIDDAY SUNDAY AT THE BOWLING CLUB... ALL CHILDREN WIN A PRIZE! ENTRY FEE INCLUDES A SAUSAGE/STEAK SANDWICH. Sign up at the club.... hope to see you there!

10.01.2022 Many people are keen to see the monthly fishing comps start up again..... However...... Due to social distancing regulations and crowd restrictions this cannot happen just yet. The good thing about living in NSW is that whilst other states have had fishing restrictions, we have been able to continue fishing. As far as the comps go, we will just have to reschedule.... When we come back you will see it here. See more

10.01.2022 Covid continues.... Due to continuing covid restrictions the NSWFCA has decided to cancel all fishing competitions until at least 30th September because there is no insurance cover. Hat Head Fishing Club is affiliated with the NSWFCA and therefore will not be holding our September comp. This direction does not impact your individual right to fish although you will not have insurance cover.

10.01.2022 Good to see Covid hasn't stopped the fish from biting. Nice.

06.01.2022 Email Melinda Pavey [email protected] This vote due on thursday 18th Tell your local member to vote against this bill.

05.01.2022 Weigh in this Sunday 8th November at 12 noon! Our Covid 19 Plan is required to be published prior to the event. So here it is....please abide by the rules and restrictions so that we can continue to run monthly competitions! Also just a reminder that it is a weigh in only, no BBQ this time. Looking forward to seeing everyone again!

02.01.2022 Weigh in for the February comp was pretty short with no boats going to sea and few juniors present. Maybe had something to do with first week of school. Heaviest fish was a 3.452 trevally caught by Isaiah Hoskins. Isaac Cook had a close second.. should have held it further out from the body to make look bigger. The most unusual fish seen for a long time was a couple of hairtail caught by Peter Britten and his carer in the river. Has anyone ever seen this species in these w...aters before? Full results for BR&E seniors were Jane Egar bream, Isaac Cook dart and tailor, Isaiah Hoskins trevally, and tarwhine, Brad Short flathead and luderick and Matt McGrath whiting. Sub junior winner was Chelsea Bollard with best bream and flathead. Don’t forget the annual presentation on 20th February starting at 11am. Tickets available at the bar. Next comp 6th and 7th March

01.01.2022 Gday. Long shot, but if anyone finds the top half of a daiwa demon blood rod washed up at hat head could u please let me know. Lost it at hat yesterday. Cheers, Reece Yule
