12.01.2022 Any #billards fans out there? Plastic was invented to make billard pool balls! Up until 1868, manufacturers were using ivory from elephant tusks to make the billard balls. Realising this was unsustainable and expensive (also cruel) a man named Alexander Parkes invented Celluloid. Celluloid quickly became known for its strong flexible properties, more and more products began began switching to plastic, like photograph and movie film strips.... #plasticfreejuly #plasticfree #brisbanebusiness #lowwaste #lowwastelifestyle #sciencefacts #saynotoplastic #ecoblog #environmentalracism #environmentaljustice #plastics #plasticcrisis #terracycle #snooker #recycling #goodforplanet #zerowastemovement #zerowastelifestyle #zerowasters #zerowasteaustralia #zerowasteparent #lesswaste #ecoeducator #ecotips We use these hashtags as a way to spread the word on the topics we care about x @ Brisbane City See more

09.01.2022 It's hard to imagine that the tough and flexible product that plastic is comes from raw materials, like oils and natural gas. The danger with fossil fuel extraction is the amount of air and water pollution it creates. This damages local communities - usually communities of colour who are more likely to live near mines and extraction sites due to economic inequities and racism. Another danger is the unsustainable rate at which we are extracting these resources a...nd the irreversible damage this is having on the earth. More demand for virgin plastics = more fossil fuel extraction = climate change acceleration and harm to communities. Plastic production is systematically linked to so many other important areas of our society, like community health, access to clean water, economics, racism, politics and climate change. Let's keep fossil fuels in the ground and use recycled plastics for our daily needs or resusable products. #plasticfreejuly #fossilfuels #recycledplastics #climatechangeactivist #wastemanagement #plasticfreeaustralia #plasticproblem #brisbanebusiness #environmentalracism #communityhealth #fossilfuelfree #plasticfreejulyaustralia @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia See more

03.01.2022 This is a big one and a usually confusing one. Plastic (if disposed of correctly) will be recycled into another plastic product HOPEFULLY. For decades we have been told to recycle, but in the past few years we have been told to reuse. ... Recycling is tricky because: 1. What can be recycled is different between local councils 2. People don't put the right products in the right bin 3. Recycling depends on the contracts the waste collectors have with recycling plants 4. Australia actually doesn't recycle - we ship our plastics off to another country to deal with (usually) If you do recycle, make sure you check your local councils recycling rules. But why not challenge yourself to reuse products? A great tip to reduce your recycling is to buy your foods in bulk. 02.01.2022 Did you know some clothes (polyester) have plastic in them? Those plastics are pulled from your clothes in the washing machine and end up in the ocean, along with other forms of plastic litter. The only way we can reduce our impact is to reduce our consumption! ... #plasticfreejuly #plasticfreejulyaustralia #plasticproblem #ecoliving #sustainableaustralia @ Maleny, Queensland See more
