25.01.2022 Can sending fewer emails really save the planet? Are you the type of person who always says thank you? Well, if it's by email, perhaps you should stop, according to officials looking at ways to save the environment. Why do emails produce carbon? Whenever you send an email - or anything else - it goes along a chain of energy-burning electronics - from your wi-fi router signalling along wires to the local exchange and from there to a telecom co, and from there to massive data ...centres operated by the tech giants. Each of those runs on electricity, and it all that energy use adds up. According to one UK source, if every Brit sent just one less email per day it would save 16,433 tonnes of carbon a year, equivalent to tens of thousands of flights to Europe. However, it has also been pointed out that energy would still be consumed even if one less email was sent! What can make a difference? Rather than worrying about relatively low-impact emails, some researchers suggest we should turn our attention to services such as game and video-streaming and cloud storage which have a much larger effect. But try selling that to your children! See more

25.01.2022 True recycling - a first for the plastic industryTo be recycled, a plastic bottle goes on a long journey from the consumer to a collection center, then to a material recovery center where the food-grade transparent bottles are sorted out. A massive PET processing plant melts the bottle back into a resin to sell to bottle manufacturers. However, that little recycling symbol on the bottom of a soda or shampoo bottle has a dirty secret. There’s only a 30 percent chance the PET pl...astic in the bottle will get turned into a new plastic product, and the chance it will become another drink or shampoo bottle is almost zero. The French startup, Carbios, hopes to change that with a new enzyme one that could usher in an entirely new way to recycle plastic, one that actually lives up to the arrows of the symbol. The innovative process is so important that the likes of Pepsi, L’Oreal and Nestle are backing Carbios to give the small company a boost to bring to market this industry changing tool. This is will be a huge game changer for facilities management because it will change recycling processes and how waste is sorted managed at the source. 23.01.2022 The NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment are planning a vibrant town centre in Camellia to bring more open space, homes and commercial spaces to the area, as well as many new jobs. Currently, the strategic planning model for the area, the Greater Sydney Commission The Place-based Infrastructure Compact (PIC), proposes Camellia should only be retained for urban rail services.UDIA NSWHowever, the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) NSW has been urgin...g the government to consider a Camellia metro station. 16.01.2022 More trees please Studies on cities have found that the difference between hottest and coolest areas of a city averaged 3.5 C during the daytime similar to the difference between urban and rural temperatures, in other words, similar to the magnitude of the urban heat island effect itself. The research suggests that trees are especially important for keeping heat in check. Furthermore, it seems that the most efficient way to lower temperature with trees is to plant more of ...them where some are already growing. Public health perspective Research into reducing urban heat revealed additional insights. Reducing nighttime temperature is especially important from a health perspective; during heat waves, people’s bodies need time to recover from daytime heat. At night, temperatures within the city are less variable, with an average difference of just 2.1 C between the warmest and coolest areas. Day versus night Interestingly, canopy cover has relatively little effect on temperature at night. For relief from sweltering temperatures at night, cities need to minimise impervious surfaces. So reducing pavement as well as planting trees has to be part of our cities’ climate mitigation strategies See more

12.01.2022 $727 Million Boost for Sydney CBD The privately-controlled Han's Group is the company behind the $727-million project which spans eight sites in Sydney city, bound by Liverpool, Castlereagh and Pitt streets. The development application involves demolition and construction of the two 80-storey towers containing 592 apartments, 158 hotel rooms, retail tenancies and five levels of basement car parking. The new towers will be five storeys taller than Crown’s One Barangaroo and ...about the same height as Mirvac and Coombes’ recently-approved 80-storey skyscraper in George Street. Han’s proposed twin skyscrapers sit across a collection of eight sites totalling 6000-square-metres in the mid-town of Sydney’s CBD. Construction Constraints The site is above the Sydney Metro tunnels and so structural integrity must be maintained during both construction and future occupation. See more

07.01.2022 Concerns around the use of AI Although there have been concerns and serious doubts about privacy and the handling of personal data there are case studies available now that prove the distinct advantages in using AI. For example, back In 2015, the banking giant BBVA designed its headquarters in Madrid to be the most energy efficient, installing 50,000 sensors to gather data about the status of the facility, environmental conditions, and the presence of people. Now AI-based software detects and diagnoses issues that can be corrected to produce even greater efficiencies. They have implemented over 100 savings measures, enabling the building complex to reduce energy consumption by 12% to 15% since the facility opened. Not bad numbers for a building designed at the outset to be as energy efficient as possible!
