23.01.2022 Caneland Shoppingtown in 1979 not long after it opened. It has certainly changed since then!!!!! (Courtesy QSA)

22.01.2022 "Kanakas mustering before leaving for the Island" . Postcard circa 1908. The "White Australia" policy enacted after federation required all indentured South Sea Islander Labourers be returned to their home islands. A good proportion however stayed and worked their own farms. After 40 years the Kanaka trade ceased and gradually european workers replaced the South Sea Islanders. A sad part of our history however is part of our history.

22.01.2022 Horses at the Mill. circa early 1900's most likely Marian Mill. from postcard on Ebay.

20.01.2022 Looking South down Wood Street from outside where the Pioneer Shire Council offices are now. I can date this photo from to about 1933. How we can date it is as follows. (1) The centre Garden beds were planted in 1931. The shrubs have matured so possibly 2 years after they were planted. (2) George Woods building on corner of Wood and Victoria Streets on the left hand side was demolished in September 1936. The Old T&G building is on the present site.... (3) The buildings on extreme left were built by William Guthrie and were opened on 23 June 1930 as an extension to the old Belmore Arms Hotel. Maguires Hotel was built in 1938 and incorporated the same design features on the facade. (4) On the opposite of wood and Victoria Streets is the Queen's Hotel renamed McGarry's Hotel in 1936. The facade on the Hotel was rebuilt in 1933. The facade in this photo is the original one from the 1880's when it was first built. The Westpac Bank occupies this site. So we can narrow down dates by when the buildings were constructed or demolished. Vehicle help as well.

16.01.2022 Does anyone have any information on the Indonesian refugees who were in Mackay during WW2? Addresses where they lived. Photo's of them. Where they came from originally in Indonesia. Literally anything. Am researching a book on them. Happy to credit people in the book.

14.01.2022 ONCE AGAIN the Myth has resurfaced.....make up your own mind but this is what I Reckon!!!!!!!!!! The Largest Crocodile ever caught in The World - Truth or Myth Mackay being located in a Tropical Area has been known as a habitat of the saltwater or estuarine Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). There are numerous stories of local settlers hunting Alligators in the Pioneer River and other creeks and rivers in the region from the 1860’s. In the 1800’s and early 1900’s the larger ...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Does anyone one know where the Avonside loco that was on Eric Gibson’s farm at Racecourse gone has disappeared in last 2 weeks http://www.mackayhistory.org//sugar_cane_trains/050_steam_

13.01.2022 Please note that I know this building is not Council owned. But couldn’t Mackay have a beautiful CBD if this kind of respect and restoration was repeated throu...ghout? And of course that IS something Council could encourage and be part of. I’ve only lived here for 16 years, but I’ve lived in a few other beautiful places, and I’m stunned by how this Council has no regard for the history of this city. I’ve never encountered this before. Of course I’m also hinting at the disrespect paid to our Memorial Pool, which could be a stunning gateway to the CBD with respectful restoration and new additions. Contrary to what the Mayor is telling the community, this is encouraged by the recent Historical Listing. The new lessee for the pool will be announced in 2 weeks but I’ve heard that Council wants the pool to only open for 4 days each week. That would be an obvious tactic to limit attendance, leading to what Council really wants eventually . . . total closure and demolition of the pool! Again, no respect for Mackay history, or military history.

12.01.2022 A little piece of history from our friend Wayne. A ruler advertising a Mackay shop from middle of last century.

10.01.2022 And this is where the story came from ............Facts from a mate of a mate!!! (from the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland - Volume XIX published 1907). We as yet do not know whether the mate of the mate of Mr. James Douglas OGilby was sober at the time however the story has survived for over 113 years with no substantial proof.

10.01.2022 Wheels are in motion for our move to the new Paget site with 1037's tender now resting on newly laid track.

10.01.2022 I went to the Trinity Op Shop today and was surprised to receive my purchase in this bag. I instantly thought of Fields as being in the City Heart but then I read Record Bar. Was this part of the original Fields store in town.

08.01.2022 Does anyone know if Shammies Soft Drinks are still around? Back in the 70’s I used to install Post Mix all over Qld in pubs and clubs, and Shammies was the Mack...ay soft drink supplier. I think it was Bill Shambrook, and I recall Ben Shambrook there? I know there was a bar stool reserved in one one of the pubs for him. I also did work for Shammies on the Gold Coast, which was owned by Garth and Ray Shambrook, and I worked with Michael Shambrook in the 70’s. They are possibly long gone now, but a great bunch of people there. See more

05.01.2022 Any old or young Nebo people out there who can help me? I am gradually updating all my webpages on Mackay & Districts War Memorials and need to fill in some blanks with information and photos etc. got to http://www.mackayhistory.org//war_memoria/nebo_hb3945.html... Cheers Glen

05.01.2022 The Last Steam Train to run a scheduled service in Queensland on 5 April 1969. It was plinthed in Boddington Street outside the old railway station until March 1996 when it was moved to the Mackay Outer Harbour to restored by the Mackay Heritage Railway. After 20+ years of work hopefully will see it running again.
