23.01.2022 HAS OPEN NIGHT this week Thursday + School CLOSURE Friday Dear Parents and Caregivers, Friendly Reminder - this week = ... The Hawker Area School Open Night on Thursday September 3rd. The School Day will start at 12.00 for students with lessons running to 5.20pm. The Open night tours and activities will start at 5.30 and run to about 7pm. This year we will be unable to participate in our shared meal, due to COVID-19 restrictions. A more comprehensive schedule for this will be out soon in Schoolzine. 22.01.2022 On Friday our students took part in the National Science Week Watermelon challenge. The day involved students investigating the question How many rubber bands does it take to implode a watermelon? Students learnt about the variables, forces at work and the nature of mass collaboration in science in order to complete the experiment which involved wrapping their watermelons in rubber bands, which were tallied up as part of the data which is now being analysed. Each rubber band... is basically identical and once on the watermelon applies an equivalent force which can be measured in newtons. Before the experiment, students made predictions on the outcome of the experiment based on scientific principles which centred on factors such as the force applied by the bands, size and weight of the watermelons, the potential strength of the watermelons and historic data from other experiments. The experiments began at 9am with preparation of the work areas, which were thankfully outside, organisation of materials which included counting off rubber bands into lots of 10, 20 etc in labelled cups to ensure effective data entry was possible. This was followed by the practicals, which were conducted by the Year 3-5 and 6-11 students (watched attentively by our F-2 students) and lasted a good couple of hours as rubber bands built up around our watermelons. The final results were spectacular and well worth the wait, as melons imploded and exploded into the air, caught on video to share with the community. Enjoy the videos to follow in a series of separate posts, it was a fun day for all involved. See more

18.01.2022 Dear Parents and Caregivers, It has been a tough time lately for all of us and I want to emphasise for all of our families that we are maintaining a safe school environment. Yesterday we had an assembly for all our students and we reiterated further the necessary hygiene measures including washing hands four times a day and how to social distance. In addition our arrangement with the toilets was explained and how this would support hygiene further. I made a special point abou...t their role in supporting our elderly citizens in Hawker and how they needed to be proactive here. At this stage the process for dealing with any concerns re COVID-19 for schools is that once an infection is reported to the health authorities that schools will be notified and closed and the community informed of this occurrence. This closure would occur for one to two days while the site is cleaned. After this students and staff are able to return to school. As has been mentioned this week our parents have two choices now concerning your children. The first is that you can keep your child at school and receive curriculum here, this will be ongoing at Hawker that children arriving for school will receive their education. The second is that you can choose to isolate your child at home, receiving curriculum from the school in this way. This will also occur, we are working on our delivery of curriculum here and at the moment it will be hard copy but will evolve into an online option which I will detail in our School Newsletter. We are also working on the option of allowing families that need them to take their child’s device home by written agreement. The school will fully support parents in choosing either of these two options in these testing times. Please stay healthy and follow the guidelines outline by the health authorities, these are the people we have received our directions from, this is a health initiative foremost. We will have a few visitors in the next few weeks at least, intrastate travel is still allowed so I imagine people will still take this opportunity, so following the guidelines will continue to be important, and for a while yet. 14.01.2022 ...and the table goes down!

13.01.2022 Lunches at Hawker Area School Dear Parents and Caregivers, Just a reminder that at present we have a restricted menu of ... lunches available that can be ordered by students at school each morning. Due to COVID-19 restrictions we provide pre-packaged food such as Mrs Macs pies, pasties and sausage rolls. This allows us to serve food in a safe manner and meet requirements set out in this area. We also ask parents and community members who may have care at times of children to get orders ready in the morning to allow time to cook pies, pasties etc. To further support us in this area also parents are asked to: If bringing food in for heating only bring in pre-packaged food for heating ie pies still in packets etc. The heating of this food needs to be done at school only ie it can’t be a ‘re-heat’ but needs to be cooked to the requirements on the packaging. Any other pre-cooked food (prepared and cooked at home or elsewhere) needs to be brought in close to lunchtime so that it can be given straight to the child concerned. This allows us to meet standards of food hygiene as well as the current COVID-19 requirements. Thankyou for supporting us by meeting these requirements. Regards, Daren O'Neill Principal [email protected]
