17.01.2022 Parthenium weed. Seen it? Call 1800 680 244 Parthenium weed has now been found on the Central Coast in a Ravensdale chook yard. It’s the 20th location where the... devastating weed has been found this year. The source is believed to be contaminated organic whole-grain chicken feed from Queensland. DPI State Priority Weeds coordinator, Philip Blackmore, said it’s suspected to be the same source as a parthenium weed infestation found in the Sydney suburb of Engadine. A concerned resident contacted Central Coast Council weed officers when she recognised the plants appearing in her chook run as parthenium after she had received a DPI Seen this plant? parthenium flyer, Mr Blackmore said. Parthenium plants found last week at Ravensdale were still growing and flowering, despite recent frosts and we urge people on the east coast, central and northern parts of the state to remain vigilant and call us with any suspected sightings of the weed. Parthenium weed has appeared across North West Local Land Services, Central West Local Land Services, Greater Sydney Local Land Services & Hunter Local Land Services regions in NSW this year. The flowering window for parthenium weed, is closing and aging plants will be less recognisable as winter sets in. We’ve seen the highest number of incursions into NSW since 1999. The community has played an important role in finding these parthenium infestations allowing council weeds officers to remove and manage all 20 infestations. DPI praised the actions of landholders and council weeds officers in detecting parthenium weed, which has contributed to the success of the program to eradicate parthenium weed since 1982. Landholders and residents who contact their local council or the department when they find suspect plants are helping to keep the state free of the devastating weed. Parthenium weed can cause severe allergic reactions in people, including dermatitis and respiratory problems and can cause health problems in dogs and livestock. Following calls to the NSW DPI Biosecurity Helpline, 1800 680 244, local council weeds officers inspect the suspect area. If parthenium plants are found they are removed by trained weeds officers. Please help by letting us know where you have seen parthenium. Check areas where hay, grain or bird seed has been fed to pets, livestock or chickens. Inspect roadsides and areas with bare soil, where soil or compost have been delivered or where earthworks have taken place. If you think you have seen parthenium weed, note the location and call the NSW DPI Biosecurity Helpline or your local council for assistance. Your calls can help us to rid the state of this unwanted weed, which invades pastures and crops and poses a significant biosecurity risk to NSW. More information about parthenium weed and how to identify the plant at different growth stages is available from DPI https://fal.cn/38V0h You can use an online form to record any weed sightings, https://fal.cn/38V0g Mangrove Mountain and Districts Community News Tamworth Regional Council Sutherland Shire Council Parkes Shire Council NSW DPI Biosecurity See more

10.01.2022 The NSW Rural Women’s Network, in partnership with The Rural Woman, are proud to announce a new project, the BETreat Reset Sessions for Rural Women. T...hese BETreat sessions will be covered online over 8 weeks between October and November and aim to help support rural and regional women after some seriously tough times. Minister for Women, Bronnie Taylor MLC, said the series will recognise and support the essential role women continue to play in helping regional communities recover and thrive after the prolonged drought, bushfires, and COVID-19 pandemic. Women are often the lifeblood of rural and regional communities and time and again are the ones who hold the people around them up during tough times, Mrs Taylor said. The program aims to provide them with an opportunity to breathe and reset, as well as gain some essential skills to help them continue to support their families and communities. The powerful and practical sessions will help them in areas such as having difficult conversations and recognising the importance of looking after themselves first. The series will be launched on the International Day of Rural Women on October 15 and events will be hosted during October and November via Zoom. Rural Women’s Network Senior Coordinator, Allison Priest, said the sessions have been designed in response to feedback gathered from teams on the frontline of the recovery and rebuilding process in rural NSW. Each 90-minute session will be hosted and presented by subject matter experts and those with lived experience in disaster recovery, Mrs Priest said. The primary focus is on providing ‘time out’ rather than overloading participants with new information and education.
