25.01.2022 -LET'S TALK HYDRATION!- Why is good hydration important? 1. Flush toxins & prevent illness... When the body is dehydrated, the elimination of wastes is diminished. Conversely, when the body is hydrated, healthier functioning and transportation of nutrients is restored. 2. Promote weight loss According to several studies published in the peer-reviewed medical journal Obesity, dieters who increased water consumption lost more weight than groups who did not. This may be due to the fact that thirst is often disguised as hunger. 3. Improve skin complexion Skin cells, like all cells, are made up of water. Therefore, if the skin is not receiving adequate hydration, it will appear dry, tight and flaky, and fine wrinkles will be more pronounced. 4. Increase energy levels Studies have found that staying hydrated before, during and after exercise can not only reduce fatigue but also improve endurance. 5. Lower the risk of heart attacks A study in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that drinking more water has been linked to a decreased risk of coronary heart disease. 6. Improve mood Dehydration is known to cause headaches, which might explain why its common to get cranky when one strikes. 24.01.2022 -TRANSFORMATION- Not every transformation is about the weight or fat you lose, or the muscle you gain! It can also be about being able to do things you couldn't previously do! ... On the left is me towards the end of 2016. I had been doing CrossFit for almost 2 years but really struggled with gymnastics. I especially struggled with anything in the rings, I could barely more than 1 unbroken ring dips, let alone a ring muscle-up. I was training hard, so I was so frustrated this wasn't getting any better! But I wasn't eating right. That's what changed me to the smiley girl on the right, up in the rings! The right picture was around April-May 2017. By then I was stringing together multiple muscle-ups. I was also a few kg's lighter. Nutrition is important for all our pursuits in life, whether it's athletic performance or simply wanting to enjoy a long, healthy and happy life! So it's something we should prioritise! 23.01.2022 -BE YOUR BEST YOU- What things/people make you happy? Do you have enough of those people in your life? Do you do enough of those things? ... Last week we spoke about the Elephant and his rider. In coaching, a lot of time is spent focussing on these two. Making the heart want the change and teaching the brain how to change. But how about the path? If your path to change is filled with friends who want to eat pizza and drink beer every day, you can't possibly make up for that the rest of your day by starving yourself. Or if you pass by your favourite fast food restaurant on the way home from work every day, when you're already hungry? There is no way you can resist. You need your environment to be on board. To be your best you, you need the people and places around you to bring out that best in you! Surround yourself with people who fire up your heart and take a path that allows you to keep your eyes on the price, just like me in this picture! However, I am so happy I've finally given these @googysproteinbars a shot! ... My favourite is the apple cinnamon, which tastes just like an apple pie cookie! Compared to similar bars like the Rx bar or the BSC Clean Bar I've reviewed before, these guys are much less mushy and actually resemble a cookie, for basically the same macros! 20.01.2022 -PRODUCT REVIEW- Here's a new one for you: the @atpscience No Way Bar! I've tried all 3 flavours over the past two weeks and they're pretty good! ... The flavours are great and the macros are amazing! But...the texture might put some people off.. The collagen makes this bar very gelatine like and actually hard to chew bites off! It might be wise to cut it in pieces with a knife and eat those! This bar is definitely good for people who don't do well with soy or whey based products or people who want the benefits of collagen (which include supporting healthy tendons, ligaments, hair, skin and nails)! 19.01.2022 -RECIPE- Who loves chocolate covered macadamias? I sure do! ... I love them so much that if I buy them in store, I'll eat the whole sugar-filled pack in one sitting, haha! So I decided to make my own, zero sugar, higher protein and more nutrient rich variety! And they're super easy, so here's the recipe so you can make them too: In a bowl, mix together: 1/2 cup of coconut oil 35g of raw cacao powder 2 scoops of chocolate protein powder Some stevia to sweeten Then grab an ice cube tray and fill each box for 75% with the mixture. Pop in a nut and cover the top. Then freeze for a few hours, and pop them out of the tray and store in the fridge! Easy as! Once frozen, they'll stay hard in the fridge and will definitely last you more than a week, unless you eat them sooner Of course you can use any nut you like! We did a post earlier about eating healthier alternatives of your staple dishes and meals, so we think it's important that better alternatives are easy to find in any store! ... We didn't have to order this pasta online, it was right next to the normal pasta at Woolies. Some people think that better alternatives are hard to find or expensive to get without ordering online. But that's not true! You just have to shop smart! This San Remo Red Lentil pasta is just like the real thing. But it's Gluten Free and packed with protein and fiber. 17.01.2022 -SNACKS- Because why not? Everybody snacks and especially with the Easter eggs hopefully out of the house and office by now, you might be in use of some healthier alternatives! ... How about these lovely Bliss Balls? They're even suitable for your vegan friends! It's a slight variation to a recipe I got from @thenaturalnutritionist new book! Here is my version: -250g chopped nuts (I used macadamias instead of the suggested cashews, as I'm not yet 100% sure whether or not I'm allergic to cashews). However, macadamias are very fat and calorie dense, so feel free to pick your favourite nut! -2 Scoops Prana Vegan Protein (You can use any you want, obviously using Whey will make them not-vegan..) -1 tablespoon chia seeds -2 tablespoons cacao powder -Some stevia to sweeten -1 tablespoon cinnamon -0.25 Cup coconut oil (melted or liquid) Soak the chia seeds in 0.25 cup of water, while you mix together the other ingredients. Once the chia seeds have soaked, add them in too and mix everything together well. Then simply roll them into balls and decorate with some more chia seeds or other decoration of choice. For me, this recipe made 12 balls. My guests the other day all loved them and I hope you do too! 12.01.2022 -FALL IN LOVE WITH BEING STRONG- The other week a photo of an Australian Women's Football player got a lot of bad/troll comments and surely that went viral! This shows how the world is still not ready for women to be strong. We're still selling 'toning' programs and skinny teas, and trolling women for showing their strength and capabilities. ... If you're struggling with your body image, this one is for you. I spent 10+ years of my life wanting to be skinny. I spent money on weight loss pills, did countless hours of cardio and tried to starve myself. Until I discovered weights. And starting fuelling my body right. My world changed and I could not be happier. The number on the scale matters very little now, the numbers on the dumbbells and weight plates do. This is why I do what I do and why hearing countless female clients say: "Oh my weight hasn't changed much but I feel so fit/strong, so I'm super happy" makes me super happy. Most girls still come to me wanting to lose weight. Luckily most end up wanting to lose fat and get strong as f*ck. 10.01.2022 -THE PYRAMID OF CHANGE- And goals! Depending on where you are in your journey and what your goals are, the way you approach your journey of change will differ! ... For most people, changing your diet is a long-term approach for a better lifestyle and better health. For others, like high level athletes, goals are much more specific and need a much more specific strategy. Still, many people are far too focussed on the top part of this pyramid, and give far too little importance to the bottom part. But the whole idea of a pyramid is that it's build from the bottom up! So why are we working our way down? Take a look at your lifestyle and approach to diet and answer honestly, are you in a supportive environment that wants you to thrive? Is your kitchen full of the foods you should be eating? Are you active? All of these are super important, so now that's it's spring time in a big part of the world, it's time to clean out our environment. Get the nutrient-poor, high calorie foods out of your kitchen. Spend more time with people that support you, and let unsupportive friends and family members know that you're engaging in a lifestyle change to benefit your health. 09.01.2022 -HAVE YOUR COOKIE AND EAT IT TOO!- How good do these cookies look? And how much protein do you think is in them? ... In regularly cookies, it probably wouldn't be a lot! Normal cookies come with tons of processed flour, sugar and butter! But these guys are different! They come with almond meal, pea protein and actual nuts! They are GF and can be made #vegan! You can make them yourself, but sometimes we get a little help in life. One brand I've always loved for all my healthy treats is @lovepbco They have great mixes for pancakes, pizza bases and these cookies! And given I can make them, following the recipe on the back of the pack is a piece of cake! 01.01.2022 -HEAL YOUR GUT- So you've seen our post the other day about listening to your gut. If not just scroll back in our feed a few posts and you'll find it..... And now that you've listened, you don't like what it's saying very much... So how can you solve your issues? Of course there will be underlying issues as to why your gut is uncomfortable, but it might take a while to find out what they are. In the mean time, how about reducing your inflammation? My favourite anti-inflammatory is hands down: turmeric. I use both liquid and powder turmeric. Powdered turmeric is great as a spice for cooking and now that winter is coming here in Australia, how about some liquid turmeric in your tea? I tend to drink it just like that in water, but that might be a bit much if you're not used to the taste. 01.01.2022 -TIME FOR A TREAT- Whatever your nutritional priorities*, you'll be able to enjoy this one! *"Nutritional priorities": way of eating that fits your lifestyle, health goals and general values. This could be eating vegan because of your values to care for our environment, or eating GF/DF for better gut health. ... This cake is: Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Sugar Free, Vegan and can be made free of tree nuts. The only nut you'll really need is coconut... It's also low carb and absolutely delicious! The base is made with almond meal, coconut oil and shredded coconut, the middle is made with peanut butter, protein powder and the top is made with cacao powder and coconut oil. It's sweetened with sugar-free maple syrup (can be made with actual maple syrup if you don't like sweeteners) and protein powder. The vegan protein powder I used (by PranaOn) is actually quite sweet (from stevia), so it adds a lot of sweetness to the whole dish. Want the full recipe? Then tag some friends to get them on board!
