06.01.2022 FINALS FEVER | Watch the full match on here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCPjTJCEeCg Match report as written by Ed Sill First Quarter... Monash won the toss and kicked with the agency of a stiff breeze which was blowing to the Cramer St. end. After the initial frenzy, Monash settled the better and with Bennett proving slippery on a half forward flank, had soon established an early lead. The Gryphons were willing to run to support their team mates and were hard at the footy. With the first break approaching, they led by 5 goals, but a last minute goal to Stu Avery reduced the deficit. Even though the breeze was reasonably strong, the Gryphs would have been pleased with their efforts. Second Quarter Hawthorn started the second quarter strongly and with a couple of quick goals, the quarter time lead did not seem insurmountable. The Gryphons rallied however as their star Centre Half Back, Rob Rafaniello, came in to his own providing drive throughout the backline. An against the wind goal by John Blandford helped maintain the Gryphs lead until the last few minutes when the elusive Mick O'Brien took the game by the scruff of the neck with a goal himself as well as setting one up. The Hawks managed to get their noses in front at half time by a couple of points. Third Quarter The Gryphs hit the ground running in the third quarter and piled on the goals. Grady and Hetherington were having an impact in the middle whilst up forward Healey and Wells were creating nuisances of themselves . Ten minutes into the quarter the Gryphs led by 5 goals and whilst not out of their reach, the Hawks would have been concerned with their position. They really nutted it out for the rest of the quarter in what would prove to be the most pivotal time of the game. Shane Parker was particularly good as he quelled the dangerous Tim Gilchrist . Nonetheless a four goal deficit at three quarter time in Grand Final means a lot of hard work was required. Fourth Quarter The Hawks started exactly how they would have wanted with a couple of quick goals. They finally hit the lead at about the ten minute mark and with the wind still blowing were going to be hard to catch. The Gryphons continued to apply the pressure and a tense battle in the midfield occurred with neither side willing to concede an easy possession. A wayward pass gave the Gryphs an opportunity to surge forward but an absolute clutch mark by Hawk Grant Broadley managed to steady the ship. Two more goals through the agency of Paul Barker and Dan Lauletta sealed the game for the Hawks. The Hawks were best served by Stu Avery who spent some time at CHB when his younger brother Phil was injured in a marking contest . Also good were Chris Reed in the centre, Darren Hutchinson in the ruck, Nathan Patterson roving, Paul Orchard in defence and Mick O'Brien whose display of skill was fabulous to watch. #vafa #footyflashbacks #finalsfever

01.01.2022 2020 CLUB AWARDS | Whilst we didn’t see a season that enabled us take the field, the hard work, commitment and spirit of HAFC was in full flight and we have presented our off field awards for season 2020. Wings Mental Health Trophy: Sarah Ward This is awarded to the person who best looks after their mates, on and off the field. ... In a year where care, connection and the mental wellbeing of those in our club was paramount, Wardy took a leading role in the Wings member survey, made updates to our mental health policies, continued to promote the Wings message at external events and took exceptional personal care for people on the committee and across the club. Best Clubperson: Sam Waldron This award is to acknowledge an individual effort by a person, with or without an official role, who has demonstrated a sustained effort over the season to make HAFC a great club to be involved with. Without a doubt Sam in his first year as President has demonstrated true leadership during what might be one of the most difficult seasons the club has had to date. Hours of work to ensure that players, officials and members remained safe, connected and engaged despite the cancelled season. In addition to this the exceptional running of club from a financial and strategic standpoint when it could have been so much easier to simply get by. The club goes into season 2021 in a great place because of his efforts.
