Sugar damages your skin through a natural process called glycation. When sugar enters your bloodstream, it attaches to proteins and produces harmful free radicals called advanced glycation end products, A.K.A - AGEs. The more sugar that you consume, these AGEs accumulate and damage the proteins around th...em. We have all heard of collagen and elastin. These are the proteins that keep the skin firm, plump and bouncy. AGEs make your collagen and elastin stiff and brittle which shows through in your complexion in the form of fine lines, sagging and wrinkles. Consuming foods with a high glycaemic index can also lead to inflammation in the body which affects the skin. This inflammation can aggravate skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, psoriasis and eczema. This inflammation happens because of a spike in insulin which is released from the pancreas into the liver. As the pancreas can only process so much, if there is too much sugar it can cause inflammation. Sugar can also activate hormones in the body that stimulate oil production on the skin. An excessive amount of sebum on the skin can cause clogged pores and acne breakouts. #lovethat The good news is, you do not have to avoid or eliminate sugar completely. You just need to pay attention to where its coming from. Knowing the difference between added sugars and natural sugars is key. Excessive levels of added sugars may be likely to exacerbate skin ageing in the long run, however everything in moderation!
