The shoulder is actually made up of four joints: Glenohumeral joint - where the ball at the top of your arm sits in the socket of your shoulder blade. This is what enables you to move your arm in a circular motion. Acromioclavicular joint - where your collarbone meets the top of your shoulder blade. The AC joint’s main job is allowing you to lift your arm above your head.... Sternoclavicular joint - where your collarbone meets your breastbone. Without this joint, you wouldn’t be able to shrug, or reach behind you. Scapulothoracic joint - where your shoulder blade sits against your rib cage at the back of your body. This keeps your shoulder stable when you lift your arm and helps you to reach further overhead.
