25.01.2022 Breakfast Basics Honey coconut berry granola - Bec's recipe collection Becs comments: Breakfast has so many variations and possibilities. But the reality is sometimes we just dont have time. So, I thought it would be great to have a series on honey-based breakfast basics that are easy to make and super delicious. Admittedly, I got carried away with this one and was going for the ultimate protein punch (as you will see in the ingredients). Its so good that when I wake up ...in the morning, I cannot wait to eat it! I recommend making this at the same time as the 'Almond, cashew and honey butter', because both require the oven for 20 minutes. Ingredients: * 500 grams rolled oats * 120 grams protein powder * 150 grams of quinoa flakes * 50 grams organic psyllium husks * 1/2 cup Hayes Honey * 45 grams dried blueberries * 45 grams dried cranberries * 100 grams toasted coconut flakes * 1 pkt of almond flakes * 2 tbs of cinnamon Method: * Pre heat oven to 160 degrees * Add the oats, quinoa flakes, psyllium husks, almond flakes, cinnamon and honey into a bowl and mix together thoroughly. Don't worry that its not completely coated. * Put on two trays and put in the oven for 10 mins. * Take out, stir around and then put back in for another 10 mins, or until golden. It will not be crunchy until it is cool. * Transfer back to the bowl and add in the toasted coconut flakes, dried blueberries and cranberries. * Stir through and when cool, transfer to a sealed container - you now have 25 serves of granola. This recipe was inspired by allrecipes Honey Nut Granola. Bec's abuzz about Hayes Honey! 24.01.2022 A few months ago, some of our smaller nucleus hives were migrated to the South Australian Research & Development Institute (SARDI) Waite Campus for a specialist pollination service as part of a program researching genetic resource conservation and Lucerne cultivar development. More than 100 species of Lucerne (Medicago sativa) are grown in specialty structures where pollination can only take place with plants of the same species, thus maintaining the pure strain genetic trait...s of all of these species of Lucerne for possible future cross breeding and genetic conservation. Lucerne plant flowers require pollination from bees to set seed and seldom produce any seed if pollinators are not available. Flowers require a mechanical tripping to release pollen. This can occur spontaneously when environmental conditions are suitable, but generally requires the activity of a pollinator such as a bee. The stamen of the flower snaps out and collides with the head of the bee, transferring pollen to the bee, and from the bee to the stigma of the flower. After a couple of weeks, bees learn to avoid Lucerne flowers - they dislike having their head hit by the flower!! Photo credit: www.sticktoplanbee.com

23.01.2022 The beginning of spring means spring hive management At the end of winter, colonies generally have low numbers of adult bees and little to no brood. To increase the size of colonies, good hive management is vital. Some hives may be stronger than others so we sometimes take frames from hives that have excess supplies and give them to weaker hives (within the same apiary site). ... During the first spring inspections, we check the brood for signs of diseases such as American foulbrood disease (AFB), a notifiable bee disease. In spring, brood rearing increases, which results in more adult bees. However, expansion of the colony can stimulate swarming, a natural impulse that causes colonies to split to reproduce. In case a hive swarms, we place preprepared nucleus boxes at each site for swarming bees to move in to. We can remove and rehome swarms in the community. If you see a swarm of bees, firstly, leave them alone (once they settle, its usually safe to be near them). Then contact a beekeeper (advise the size, location and how long they have been there).

21.01.2022 The greater the number of bees in a hive, the more effective the hive is at producing honey, and the more wax it can manufacture for the hive to grow and care for the bees. When extracting honey, beeswax is left over when the caps are removed from the honeycomb cells, but it never goes to waste! There are hundreds of uses for beeswax! Here are some examples of ways humans use beeswax: Skincare... Beeswax is used in cosmetics, creams, balms and ointments and has a range of benefits: - Does not suffocate the skin’s pores. - Attracts water molecules to that area, helping to keep skin hydrated. - Forms a protective barrier against environmental forces by holding in moisture, reducing dryness and providing temporary itch relief. - Allows the skin to breathe while preventing forces such as wind or rain from stripping away the skin’s natural oil. - Is high in vitamin A which stimulates skin cell production and is a necessary antioxidant for a healthy complexion. We use beeswax to make natural lip balms and body butter (pictured) Fashion - Dreadlocks - Lubricate zippers - Polish shoes In the kitchen - Often used in jelly beans, gummy bears and similar lollies - Reusable food wraps - Condition wooden bowls and chopping boards - Polish granite counter tops Around the house - Make candles that don’t drip or give off toxic smoke - Waterproof leather, saddles, bags etc - Polish floors Furniture - Lubricate old furniture joints, hinges and drawer rails - Polish furniture when mixed with linseed oil and mineral spirits - Prevents bronze from tarnishing Music and art - Coat the surface or strings of musical instruments including guitars, didgeridoos, tambourines, woodwind reeds, bow strings & bagpipes - Art supplies such as egg painting and glass etching - Modelling and casting in art And more - The manufacture of electronic components - Wax surfboards for grip - The manufacture of CDs - Stabiliser in military explosives More info: https://www.hayeshoney.com.au/s/stories/beeswax-3

15.01.2022 Came across this cute little scorpion when checking the hives. It’s a Marbled scorpion, found across SA, mainly in and around gum trees. He’s not much bigger than a bee!! Fun fact: Marbled scorpions have the worst sting amongst Australian scorpions, causing intense pain for a few hours
15.01.2022 There are over 1,700 species of native bee in Australia (more are being discovered every year) and an estimated 300 species that live around Adelaide. Some are as small as 2mm long! Native bees are excellent pollinators of fruit trees and vegetables and are a great asset in the home garden. They also pollinate many native plants - in fact some of our native plants can only be pollinated by native bees. Here are a few ways you can support native bees in your garden:... 1. Plant a range of native plants that flower at different times throughout the year. Choose as many local plant species as possible. Find a local nursery that has a selection of indigenous flowering plants. 2. Leave some areas of your garden free of vegetation. Some native bees nest in the ground. They look for slightly compacted soils with no vegetation. 3. Let some of your weeds flower before pulling them out. 4. Provide a water source. The most important thing to remember is to give the bees something to land on otherwise they will drown. Fill a bowl with stones or marbles and water and place it in an accessible spot in your backyard. You can also float corks in the water. 5. Use less pesticides. They can stay in the plant for a long time meaning pollen and nectar is poisonous long after application. Consider using biological, environmental or hands on alternatives. 6. Build a native bee hotel ready for spring. Most native bees are solitary. Females make a nest by burrowing into rotten wood or dirt. You can give them a hand. Cut lengths of bamboo or cardboard tubes and place them in a sheltered area. There are plenty of bee-N-bee making guides online. How to spot a native bee? Native bees can sometimes be mistaken for flies or wasps. If you look closely and see bags of pollen on its back legs or under its abdomen, its a bee. Some flies mimic bees. The easiest way to tell the difference is to count their wings - bees have two sets of wings and flies only have one set. Check out this great resource to help you identify native bees: https://www.aussiebee.com.au/gallery.html Blue banded bee, Mark Berkery
14.01.2022 Honeycomb - Bec's recipe collection Becs comments: This is Nigella Lawsons honeycomb (Hokey Pokey) recipe, but I have swapped out golden syrup for honey. Using honey gives it a beautiful rich and deep flavour. Plus it only takes 10 minutes to make.. its my Sunday sweet treat! Ingredients: ... - 100 grams caster sugar - 4 tablespoons Hayes Honey - 1 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda Method: 1. Put the sugar and honey into a saucepan and stir together to mix. You mustn't stir once the pan's on the heat, though. 2. Place the pan on the heat and let the mixture first melt, then turn to goo and then to a bubbling mass the colour of maple syrup - this will take 3 minutes or so. 3. Off the heat, whisk in the bicarbonate of soda and watch the syrup turn into a whooshing cloud of aerated pale gold. Turn this immediately onto a piece of reusable baking parchment or greased foil. 4. Leave until set and then bash at it, so that it splinters into many glinting pieces. Bec's abuzz about Hayes Honey! 14.01.2022 Tahini, feta & honey toastie - Bec's recipe collection Becs comments: This may be the best toastie I have ever eaten! A twist on this original recipe: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recip/tahini-feta-honey-toastie. I swapped the sourdough for ciabatta bread and swapped the thyme for rosemary. Ingredients:... - 1 tbsp tahini - 2 tsp Hayes Honey - 2 slices of sourdough or ciabatta bread - 50g feta (I used a buffalo persian feta) - a few thyme (or rosemary) leaves - butter - 1 tsp sesame seeds Mix the tahini and honey together. Spread the mixture on a slice of bread. Scatter over the feta and a few thyme/rosemary leaves, then top with another slice of bread. Butter the outsides and press sesame seeds into each side. Fry in a hot pan, weighed down by another pan, for 2 mins on each side (or use a toasted sandwich maker), then drizzle with honey. Bec's abuzz about Hayes Honey! I used a dutch cinnamon fruit loaf so all I had to do was whisk 2 eggs and a cup of milk with a bit of salt. I dipped the bread on both sides into the egg and milk mixture (be quick so it doesn't get too soggy) and cooked on medium heat for 2-3 minutes, flipping once. 10.01.2022 Pink Bees Knees Cocktail - Bec's recipe collection Becs comments: One for the grown ups - this cocktail is a delicious combination of honey, quince, lemon and gin. I opted for a lemon premix cordial with no sweetener instead of lemon juice, and a little extra syrup. ... You could absolutely still do this without the quince but it won't be pink or have the underlying sweet spiciness. If you do make the quince syrup, it lasts a month in the fridge! Ingredients: * 2 tbsp Hayes Honey * 80 ml ( cup) gin * 80 ml ( cup) lemon juice * 2 tbsp quince syrup (from honey-roasted quinces) Method: Combine honey and 2 tablespoons of water in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until the mixture reaches a slow simmer and the honey is smooth. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Combine honey syrup, gin, lemon juice and quince syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into 2 chilled cocktail glasses and serve. 10.01.2022 It’s gonna be a scorcher! Bees require water for a number of reasons; diet, to feed larvae, to dilute honey and to maintain hive humidity. In hot weather, bees can use more than one litre per day for cooling the hive (in extreme heat, strong hives can use up to five litres per day)!... You can help bees in hot weather by providing a water source. The most important thing to remember is to give the bees something to land on otherwise they will drown. 1. Fill a bowl with stones or marbles and water and place it in an accessible spot in your backyard. You can also float corks in the water. 2. Hang a cloth halfway over a bucket of water - the bees will take water directly from the wet cloth.

But the reality is sometimes we just dont have time. So, I thought it would be great to have a series on honey-based breakfast basics that are easy to make and super delicious. This smoothie is so simple and takes two minutes. Ingredients:... * 1/2 cup of blueberries (frozen or fresh) * 30 grams of protein powder * 250 ml of milk (any kind - coconut will thicken it a lot if the berries are frozen) * 1 tsp of Hayes Honey * I also used a piece of delicious honeycomb because it was then a sweet treat at the end of the smoothie. 02.01.2022 Medovik (Russian honey cake) - Bec's recipe collection Becs comments: My coworker requested this honey cake for his birthday. It was fun to make and not as tricky as it might look. And its not overly sweet. I let it sit for two days like tiramisu to soak up all the flavours! Ingredients:... For the cake layers: 7 tablespoons (100g) butter 4 tablespoons (80g) Hayes Honey 1 teaspoon (5g) baking soda 3 cups (450g) flour 3 eggs 3/4 cup (150g) sugar For the cream: 2 cups (515g) sour cream 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream 1 cups (190g) powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Method: 1. Preheat oven to 175C. 2. In a heat proof bowl beat eggs with sugar until light and fluffy add butter and honey. Set the bowl over a bain-marie (double boiler). Stir until butter is completely melted and sugar is dissolved. 3. Add baking soda to the honey and butter mixture and whisk. Gradually add flour and mix with a wooden spoon until dough forms. 4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface. Divide into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into balls. Roll each piece into very thin layer, trim the rolled dough using a 7-Inch (18 cm) cake ring/cake pan. 5. Pierce each layer with a fork. Bake for 7-8 minutes or until golden. To save time, while baking one tray, roll out other dough pieces. Bake the leftover dough as well (it may take less time), let cool, then process baked leftovers into fine crumbs. 6. Make the cream: in a large place bowl heavy cream, vanilla extract and powdered sugar. Beat to medium-stiff peaks. Fold whipped cream into the sour cream until smooth. 7. Once the cake layers are cooled you can assemble the cake. Spread about 3 tablespoons of cream on one layer, Stack the second layer on top and repeat until you have 8 layers. Spread extra cream on top and sides. Spread reserved cake crumbs on top and sides of the cake. 8. Refrigerate the cake overnight.
