From the owls and kookaburras in the trees to the birds of prey on the plains. 12.01.2022 Wildlife Wednesday Did you know that the Hay Plains are home to three species of Kangaroo? We have the iconic Red Kangaroo (Macropus rufus), Eastern Grey Kangaroo (M. giganteus), Western Grey Kangaroo (M. fuliginosus), living right on our doorstep! ... Located 10km out of town, the Hay Plains sunset viewing areas is great place to watch the kangaroos wake up from their afternoon naps. Just keep your eye's peeled for a few slowpokes on the road! Fast Facts Kangaroos are the world’s largest marsupials with some species reaching up to 2 metres in height and weigh up to 90kg! Female kangaroos can determine the sex of their offspring and even delay gestation when environmental factors are likely to diminish the chance of their young surviving. Kangaroos are able to survive without access to water for a considerable time, gaining what little moisture they need from eating succulent plants. Some species can bound at 60kph, clearing more than 8m with a single hop!
