25.01.2022 A very Happy Halloween to all our friends and clients. This is a picture of how the local kids in our area get into the spirit of Halloween. The kids just love dressing up, not to mention the literally bucket load of lollies they collect by going house to house. A fun night for all. #halloween @ Hazel and Fred

24.01.2022 #howtoresearchagedcarehomes As part of our analysis when comparing Aged Care Homes, we undertake a review of the Federal Governments audit of the home being considered. This is the called the 'Consumers' Experience of the Quality of Care and Services Aged Care Homes' and is undertaken by the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency. These reviews can be found on their website https://www.agedcarequality.gov.au/ These reports provide yet another layer we use to ascertain whether the aged care home is worth considering or not .

17.01.2022 Young people need something stable to hang on to a culture connection, a sense of their own past, a hope for their own future. Most of all, they need what grandparents can give them. Jay Kesler It’s Grandparents day today.

16.01.2022 What does downsizing mean Whilst many seniors who own their own home wish to remain living in their home for as long as possible, there are also a large number of seniors that decide to ‘downsize’ for a variety of reasons ranging from upkeep, financial liquidity, proximity to loved ones and so on. Downsizing gives these seniors an opportunity to remain in their local area, move closer to family and friends or even take this opportunity for a ‘tree’ or ‘sea’ change. For our ...purposes here, we’ll refer to downsizing as a decrease in the size of their dwelling, for example - reducing the number of bedrooms, living area, yard area and in many instances, the value of the home. We’ll also exclude seniors moving into Retirement Living Communities or Aged Care Homes, as we can discuss that move at another time. By working as Buyer’s Agents we work with seniors to assist them with ‘downsizing’. What this means is that we help our clients identify and negotiate the purchase of a suitable new home (we do all the leg work and the negotiations). This allows them to move into a more suitable home and quite often allows them to invest or live off surplus funds from the sale of their home . Examples of properties purchased for ‘downsizers’ include: Low set townhouses; Ground floor units; Detached houses on small blocks of land; Apartments with lifts and views etc. In the coming posts we’ll let you know of some of the benefits we have seen firsthand from seniors downsizing. Also, if you have a question in relation to ‘downsizing’ as you’re reading the posts, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment, call or private message us at any time.

13.01.2022 Downsizing and moving home isn’t just a big move for the people, it’s also a huge move for the pets. When looking at suitable homes such as units, townhouses and independent living communities when you have a treasured pet, it’s imperative to find a complex that allows pets. Always obtain copies of the body corporate bylaws or governing rules of the complex prior to making a decision. ... And note that ‘subject to body corporate approval’ isn’t a guarantee, therefore we recommend seeking approval prior to signing the dotted line. There is an ever increasing number of units, townhouse complexes and independent living communities that allow your pet to make the move with you. #brisbaneseniors #over60 #petsofinstagram

12.01.2022 Aged Care Homes that cater for visiting children - isn't this just excellent Whether that be a play house like this one, swings, a designated area with kids toys and books etc. Kids love to keep busy and once they have had a chat with granny and grandpa, they love nothing better than playing with new toys, swings and seeing what books they can read. This also gives mum and dad time to chat and the other residents love nothing better than watching children at play. Whils...t we are seeing some Aged Care Homes and Retirement Villages encourage this, we would love to see more swings and children's playgrounds at every Home. #childfriendlyagedcarehomes See more

07.01.2022 Pets & Retirement Villages - What you need to know before moving in! [Transcript] Hi. Today I thought we'd talk briefly about people downsizing, often from their family home and moving into a retirement village or an independent living community when they have an existing pet. They might have a dog or a cat that they want to take with them that's been with them for many years. I would like to explain that when we are looking at relocating someone into a retirement village or... an independent living community, how we go about finding out whether the pet would be welcome there. Now, of course there's two types of pets. There's the current ‘existing pet’ that has been living with them and then there's also the potential acquisition of a ‘new pet’ that they might look at buying in the future and by pets, I mean dogs, cats, fish or birds etc. Each retirement village has a different rule in relation to allowing pets, so the first port of call is to have a look at the Form 3, the Village Comparison Document. On page 17, section 17.2 it simply asks the question, "Are residents allowed to keep pets?" So that's our first port of call, to see whether it sates yes or no to the questions - Are residents allowed to keep pets? Quite often if it says no and great, we now know the answer to that one. If it says yes however, it often refers us to guidelines. Now we get those from the village operator and they specify the requirements of an ‘approved pet’. Quite often it dictates the number of pets, the type of pet, the size and the weight and often the species as well. So, it's very important to have a look at these guidelines. We find the newer homes, newer villages quite accommodating with regards to pets. Though some of the older ones are quite strict. We had a case recently whilst looking at an independent living community for a client whereby existing pets were allowed, but once that pet passed away, they weren't allowed to have a new pet. That was kind of an interesting take, an interesting guideline. That allowed our client to determine whether that independent living community was the right one for them. Thanks. I'm Sam Price and I hope that little tip helps and I wish you a great day. Bye.

07.01.2022 Hi, it's Sam here from Hazel & Fred and today we're answering a question we received off Facebook: The question is ‘Do all aged care homes accept people that are fully government funded?’ The simple answer to this question is no. When we're out looking at aged care homes, we group them into three main categories. The first category being those homes that are pretty-well fully government subsidized homes. That means that the residents living in the home are looked after by the... government, so the government is subsidizing their accommodation in the home. Then we've got other homes which are fully privatized or private aged care homes, where the individuals pay the full RAD and or the DAP to live in the home, so these homes often don't accept any government subsidized residents Then you have the third category. In these homes we have a mixture of the two. They have a certain percentage allocated to government subsidized residents and the balance is used for residents that are full paying residents that can afford the DAP and the RAD. So that's basically the three types of aged care homes that we see in our marketplace and depending on people's income and asset assessment, would dictate which home best suits them. Thanks for watching or listening and we'll talk again soon. Bye.

03.01.2022 In Australia your principle residence (home) is not included in the assets test that decides whether or not you are eligible for the Age Pension and other government benefits. Interestingly, almost 137,000 pensioners own their own home with a mortgage, compared to 1.32 million who own their home outright. #pensioner

03.01.2022 Treasury has released documents under a freedom of information request (FOI) relating to its input on a report into retirement income adequacy, which also examined the prospect of raising compulsory superannuation contributions from 9.5 percent to 12 percent . Although just an idea at this stage, it will be interesting to see when and by how much the compulsory superannuation contribution is increased. Stay tuned...
