16.01.2022 Hey there I thought I might introduce myself to those who don’t know me My name is Candace and I’m the founder/owner of Hazel Mai which opened 5 1/2 years ago...but was a LONG time in the making. Growing up in Canada I went from working retail in a SMALL town to studying Fashion Marketing & Merchandising in Toronto while working for a LARGE international retailer ... For 7 years I worked as a merchandiser in the flagship store and helped set up new stores all across the country. I loved making things look pretty and seeing spaces transformed But 1 thing about ‘big’ business is it’s hard to get your voice at the bottom heard at the top I was a great problem solver with ideas and a creative eye but big business is cookie-cutter and lacks that personal touch After 7 years in the rat race I had had enough and decided to take a gap year to Australia I mean why not?? I sold all my worldly possessions and took a trip to a country I had never been, that couldn’t have been further from my home. I travelled for a good part of the year but spent most of my time in Townsville, where I met my now husband I knew I wouldn’t be happy working for anyone else for any longer I HAD to follow my dream and open my own boutique- A place where I had all creative control, A place where I could make women feel pretty and A place where I could transform the landscape of the local community. At the time, I wasn’t even a permanent resident when I signed on for a 5 year lease. Looking back that prob was a bit risky but I didn’t see myself doing OR being anywhere else I was going to figure this out and make it work Small business can be summed up as a rollercoaster Those of you in it - know that, but I wouldn’t change a thing about the last 5 1/2 years. This is where I’m meant to be - doing what I love. . Hazel Mai has been so lucky to have support from the local & broader community and we will continue to bring you more of our signature elevated style and service you’ve come to expect
