21.01.2022 At first glance, you may think that Charles Massy's story doesn't have anything to do with Hazelnuts. The thing is that Regenerative Agriculture is a gathering force and people are voting with their wallets. As growers of long lived tree crops, hazelnut growers can be at the forefront of the Regenerative Agriculture movement because it's primarily a change in mindset and a change in management practices.... Watching this epiosode of Australian Story could be the best 30 minutes you've spent in a long time. And if it really resonates with you, check out his book, Call of the Reed Warbler.

20.01.2022 The move towards plant-based proteins, especially, among younger consumers is often cited as a driver for increases in nut consumption, now and into the future. Don't get me wrong, I think it is, and I think hazelnuts have a got a good story to tell in this context, however, it's important not to get too carried away with plant-based proteins. As this blog by Will Harris argues, most plant-based proteins such as Impossible Burger etc. come from GMO monocultures that are dren...ched in herbicides, pesticides and synthetic fertiliser. This form of agriculture is not sustainable, unlike tree nuts, and we need to be careful to differentiate ourselves as an industry. https://blog.whiteoakpastures.com//animal-impact-vs-indust

20.01.2022 FrogID Week is Australia’s Biggest Frog Count, held annually for Australians to help record frog calls through the free FrogID app, as a measurement of frog health and distribution around the nation. FrogID Week aims to monitor frog distributions over time, helping us to understand how frogs and their ecosystems are responding to a changing planet. This annual event provides an ‘audio snapshot’ of frogs calling across Australia. To get involved, simply record frogs each day or night during FrogID Week using the FrogID app. Every call counts! For more information visit: www.frogid.net.au/frog-id-week

20.01.2022 This great event continues tonight. Last week's movie is still available to stream. It ended up being Queens of the Sun because of technical glitches with INHABIT: A Permaculture Perspective, which will hopefully be running tonight.

18.01.2022 This great event kicked off last week and the movie "Need to Grow" is still available to stream once you've registered.

16.01.2022 We often talk about the health benefits of hazelnuts because of their mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids, dietary fibre, and other nutrients. But nuts are also a great source of protein, which likely contributes to the health benefits of eating them. With more Australians moving away from meat-rich diets, nuts also provide an ideal alternative source of protein. https://www.hazelnutgrowersaustralia.org.au/plant-and-nut-/

16.01.2022 "To better understand regenerative agriculture, it helps to be a systems thinker. Why? It takes system thinking to better understand how the water, carbon, nitrogen and nutrient cycles are interdependent and interconnected through photosynthesis, decomposition, the microbial carbon pump, and soil microbes including both saprophytic and mycorrhizal fungi." https://lachefnet.wordpress.com//quality-agriculture-a-b/

16.01.2022 Harvest is still some time off but this site may be worth keeping in mind.

14.01.2022 There are a lot of podcasts on the topic of regenerative agriculture. I listen to a lot of them and I usually come away with something from every one. John Kempf's Regenerative Agriculture podcast is a stand out, however, because he doesn't just cover grazing but also cropping, vegetable growing and tree crops, which makes it more relevant to hazelnut growers. The podcast below with a cherry grower is worth a listen.... One downside is that his guests are mostly American, however, John has realised he has a global audience and is trying to rectifiy that. http://regenerativeagriculturepodcast.com/the-regenerative-

04.01.2022 We've been hearing about this movie for a while but finally - here it is. It is a pity that it's only on Netflix at the moment but the trailer does look great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3-V1j-zMZw&feature=emb_logo

04.01.2022 Griffin’s vineyard achieved a 99.8 percent reduction after replacing grape netting with laser bird repellent devices Griffin’s Lair Vineyard is located in the southernmost part of the Sonoma Coast, California, USA. The company is committed to environmentally and socially sustainable practices including: improving the soil, streams, wildlife habitat, grasslands, and other natural resources on the property, investing in organic products and integrated pest management programs a...nd respecting vineyard workers. The vineyard’s biggest pest problem was bird damage to grapes. Jim Griffin, Owner of Griffin’s Lair, says that he spent more than US$25,000 US dollars per year (US$1,190 per acre) on netting and labour costs in an attempt to control birds. Because the netting was very costly in terms of both material and labour, and not particularly effective, Griffin went in search of a more convenient and effective bird repellent. After doing some research he discovered a system of automated lasers. After Griffin had four installed on the vineyard, he is happy with the results a 99.8 percent reduction in birds! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bzq0ZXULtIA

04.01.2022 Don't see any nutgrowers in this video but nonentheless, today is a day to celebrate being a farmer whether you grow nuts, fruit, vegetables, crops or livestock. Happy National Ag Day.

01.01.2022 This looks like it could be fascinating and I suspect there would be many useful lessons learned despite hazelnuts being a temperate tree nut as opposed to macadamias being sub-tropical. https://www.facebook.com/events/630654184248888/
