25.01.2022 So what’s in your winter arsenal? Colds, coughs and gut issues ramp up at this time of the year so it’s beneficial to stock up and be ready. I always have these little goodies in my cupboard/fridge. I use other remedies/herbs/homoeopathics also depending on what the health issues are but these 6 can cover a lot. Oregano oil has a wide range of uses for the immune system(antiviral, antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial), digestive aid, can help with calming a cough, breath...ing and sore throats. Vitamin C, Hesperidin,Rutin, grapefruit seed extract can reduce inflammation, for colds, health of eyes, cardiovascular system(heart, cold hands/feet). It’s found in citrus, lemon and orange peel, grapefruit, capsicum, onions, broccoli, kiwi, tomatoes, cabbage, cantaloupe, brightly coloured fruits and veg. Get into some great soups, juices, slow cooked meals. Tea tree oil/Eucalyptus for sore throats, inhalations, cleaning, allergic rhinitis etc. Echinacea, zinc, olive leaf combinations are amazing to bomb the system and get on top of those colds quickly. Probiotics, a healthy gut will help keep bugs out, heal and protect the body from getting colds/infections repeatedly. How do I get these goodies into my kids or fussy ones? A nice tasty Vitamin C powder, add a couple of drops of oregano, some probiotics, a 1/4 glass of water and take a big gulp. I also rub a few drops of oregano/eucalyptus on the soles of the feet. If you are feeling a little sniffly, a little tired get into a few of these beauties quickly and often and lessen those days of feeling unwell and having to take antibiotics or cold tablets. If you would like anymore information or would like to buy any products please contact me. It certainly pays off. Happy winter health x

25.01.2022 So yesterday I talked about detox and today, well I’m not! I am a little obsessed with this fabulous Dessert Hummus. Who would have thought a protein, fibre packed chickpea could create a yummy dessert mixed with peanut butter. You can create different variations by adding cacao, chia, nut butters. Whatever you like. Dip with fruit, crackers and it’s a great snack for kids. I used a 1/4 cup of maple syrup as a sweetener but if you like it sweeter just add a little more to t...aste. I used my thermomix (see below) but there are many variations and instructions of the recipe online. Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Dessert "Hummus" Makes 2 1/3 cups Ingredients 1 can chickpeas, white beans 1/3 cup maple syrup or honey or rice malt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Pinch of Himalayan salt 3/4 cup peanut butter 2-4 tbsp milk (optional) dairy free, coconut water or milk. 1/4 cup chocolate chips, to taste (optional) Optional Dippers: strawberries, watermelon, sliced apples, blueberries, bananas, pretzels, crackers Instructions Combine all ingredients except milk and chocolate chips in a food processor and puree until very smooth (2-3 minutes, depending on how powerful your machine is). Thin with milk if necessary to reach desired consistency. Stir in chocolate chips and eat with a spoon, or serve with chopped fruit and crackers. Thermomix Add the white beans/ chick peas to the bowl and process for 5 seconds, speed 5. Add the sweetener, vanilla, sea salt, peanut butter and blend 30 seconds, speed 5 (scraping down the sides every 10 seconds). Add the milk or coconut water and blend 5 seconds at a time until you have the consistency you're after. Mix through the choc chips or cacao nibs, reverse 10 seconds speed 5. Serve as above.

24.01.2022 What is a Naturopath? When asked what my occupation is and I say 'I am a Naturopath', I am often asked 'oh what is that?', 'you tell people to drink herbs and eat lentils' and my favourite 'you are a witch doctor, fish slapper'. Naturopaths are professionals with years of study and continuing education. Naturopathy is health care based on the body's innate ability to heal itself through lifestyle modification, dietary advice, nutrient supplementation, exercise, herbs, homoeo...pathy and many more other therapies. We need to be lateral thinkers, empathic and flexible and try to remove physical and emotional barriers to good health. You can see a Naturopath for many different health concerns, *Gastointestinal concerns eg IBS *Fertility, reproductive health eg PCODS,Menopause *Boost immune function eg hay fever, sinus, coughs *Childrens health *Skin concerns *Increasing energy *Stress reduction, physical and emotional *Dietary I would consider myself to be an 'old school' Naturopath, as many naturopaths use tests like hair trace anaylsis, hemaview, vega, allergy testing etc. I try to keep costs down and will refer on if needed. During my consultations I try to identify the underlying cause of concern using my skills with iridology(eye diagnosis), symptoms(bowel habits, sleep, stress), family and past medical history of the patient to collect information to help with diagnosis. At the end of a consultation you will have tailor-made directions to follow regarding diet, lifestyle suggestions and herbal or nutritional medicine. As most of my clients know I am most well known for the body work that I do. I studied mechanotherapy, and over the years I have completed courses in Bowen, Kinesiology, Feldenkrais, EFT, Lomi Lomi therapies and more. Natural treatments can take a little while to show benefits and in our society quick fixes are much more appealing and thats ok if you enjoy visiting Doctors with the same complaints or feeling below your best. For my clients and especially the children I like to educate and let them know they are responsible for their own health. We need to feed our bodies in many different ways to keep healthy and well. That is priceless.

18.01.2022 To detox or not to detox this is the question I get asked by many people as they try to stick to their New Years resolution, the one we all make every year! So what is a detox and should you do it? A detox can help your body's natural cleansing process by resting the organs through fasting and helps stimulate the liver, kidneys, intestines and skin with increased elimination and then refuelling the body with healthy nutrients. Some of us like to restrict calories, fast and ...eliminate lots of different foods short term and others like to make more realistic long term changes and try to rebalance their system this way. The number one type of detox or cleanse that is proven is the one that limits processed, high fat and sugary foods, and replaces them with more whole foods like fruit and vegetables. Low Human Intervention Food, food that our body and digestion recognises, products of nature not industry is the way to go. Look at changing up your daily routine or food choices in a small way everyday which will help you with your long term health. Lighten up your toxic load, the main culprits being alcohol, refined sugars, seed oils, refined grains, processed foods, dairy, coffee. Extend time between your last meal at night and breakfast, say 7pm dinner, 11 am breakfast, see if that works for you. Drink lots of water in between meals and on rising, water with apple cider vinegar or lemon juice, herbal teas like yerba mate, green tea, licorice tea, whatver you enjoy. Eat more eggs, unlimited green veggies, especially brocolli and cauliflower, nutritional yeast, veggie juices, especially celery and beet. Add some nuts like almonds for fats and more protein, chicken, turkey, fish, prawns. Herbs and spices like coriander, garlic, tumeric, parsley, or cinnamon daily can help with inflammation. One piece of fruit daily, apple, orange, strawberries, blueberries, grapefruit or some watermelon. Switch margarine for real butter, coconut oil, avocado, nut butters, tahini, extra virgin olive oil. Minimise use of chemical based household cleaners and personal health care products and try and substitute natural alternatives. There are some great herbal peparations and minerals and vitamins that can be added to help with your cleanse but it is always advisable to have a chat with a naturopath or other health professional before you start. Whatever you choose, hard core detox, cleansing or longer term daily change of dietary habits it is all beneficial and a great way to face a New Year. Happy Healthy 2019 x HB

18.01.2022 Just a few goodies

11.01.2022 Creamy Chicken & Brown Rice Soup My girlfriend Narelle told me about this soup and it’s yummo! Kids liked it too. It is a filling soup that is great for a quick winter meal. The soup becomes quite thick as it cools down and could be thinned down a little more with some milk if you like. I changed it up a little as I didn’t have chicken, celery or peas so I added some red capsicum, cauliflower and lemon to give it a lift. Any veggies would be fab. If you like herbs add what...ever you have, basil, mint and parsley would be great. This is a Thermomix recipe but you could easily do it on the stove top. Creamy Chicken & Brown Rice Soup Ingredients 50g of raw brown rice 50g raw almonds 1 onion, halved 2 garlic cloves 1 stalk of celery, quartered 1 large carrot, quartered 30g olive oil or butter 300g cubed chicken 1 litre water 1 1/2 Tbspns chicken stock paste (made in TMX - see below) or vege stock paste (or to taste) 100g raw brown rice ground rice & almonds handful fresh parsley, chopped 100g frozen peas Instructions Grind rice in Thermomix bowl 1 min/speed 9. Add almonds and grind 20 sec/speed 9, or until fine. Remove to a bowl and set aside. Place onion, garlic cloves, celery and carrot in bowl and chop for 3 sec/speed 5. Add oil (or butter) and cook for 3 mins/100C/speed 1. Add chicken and cook 3 min/100C/speed 1. Add water, stock paste, rice, and reserved ground rice and almonds, and cook for 30 mins/100C/reverse/speed 1. Add parsley and peas, cook another 5 mins/100C/reverse/speed 1. Adjust seasonings if needed, and serve. Nut free version Replace almonds with 50g sunflower seeds, or an extra 50g of brown rice. Grain free version Omit rice. At start of recipe, grind 100g almonds (or cashews) and set aside, adding back in later in the recipe. If you like you can add 150g cauliflower rice with the nut meal, and cook the soup for approx 20-25 mins. (Cauliflower rice is made by chopping cauliflower florets for 5 sec/reverse/speed 5.) Enjoy

11.01.2022 ‘Christmas is a box of tree ornaments that have become part of the family’. I love my Christmas tree with beautiful memories. I hope you are enjoying yours. Wishing you all a magical Christmas and a safe and healthy 2020.

10.01.2022 I hope this all finds you well and not upsetting your adrenals too much with stress! Stressing releases cortisols and suppresses our immune system, the last thing you want to do! So what do we do, panic or try and remain and stay healthy, and if we get a virus fight it! Foods to include for fighting virus’s, reducing inflammation, improving your immune system can include;... Leafy greens, spinach, kale, try pestos, Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, citrus and it’s zest, like oranges, lime, lemon, pineapple, kiwi fruit, herbs and spices, ginger, garlic, oregano, thyme, tumeric, cinnamon, sage, rosemary, chilli, coconut oil, mushrooms(shiitaki) and curries. Protein is essential to build and maintain new cells. Include with every meal. Suggestions would include meat, fish, dairy, eggs. Plant based nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, quinoa. Smoothies with seeds, nut butters, tahini, hummus on grain toast, eggs any which way. Including the above foods to your diet can only be a good thing, so try some soups, add the foods to your normal meals, change up your breakfast and snacks. Drink plenty of water, apple cider vinegar in warm water, herbal teas. Goodies to take. Vitamin C Vitamin D liquid is best to digest. Probiotic(if the gut is happy, your immune system will be stronger and more resilient). Lysine and Zinc(very important) Green drinks, Protein drinks with B’s, Magnesium for energy can be beneficial. If you get the virus you could take immune fighting herbs, adaptogens but that’s another post. Essential oils like tea tree oil, eucalyptus, lemon oil, bergamot, oregano, frankincense, thyme, clove can be beneficial in a vaporiser to help with cold symptoms and air quality. Finally nothing replaces washing hands and good hygiene and being kind to people and be grateful. Stay well and hopefully we can all stay calm, healthy and happy.

10.01.2022 Make your own Healthy Salad Dressing. Why make your own and not just buy one off the shelf? Take a look at the ingredients list, even the ‘natural’ dressings are a nutritional disaster and should try to be avoided. Most are a combination of highly processed vegetable oils, sugar (many of the dressings on the market list it as the third ingredient). Not to mention extra ingredients to make them thicker, last longer on the shelf. Praise mayonnaise 99%fat free has almost 3 tim...es as much sugar as a can of Coke! It’s so easy and quick to make your own. The monounsaturated fats in extra virgin olive oil are beneficial to your health and when served with salad and vegetables, actually enhance the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins found in them. The acid half (vinegar or citrus juice), assists in the digestion of vitamins and minerals, most of which are more efficiently absorbed in an acidic environment. Plus, vinegar is a source of acetic acid, and acetate is fabulous for modulating immune responses via the gut. So how to make a quick dressing. The rule of thumb with any dressing is approximately 3 parts oil to 1 part acid (vinegar or citrus juice). Dress your salad or veggies just prior to serving. I like to make my dressings in small jars and it only takes a few minutes. 3 RECIPES TO JAZZ UP SALADS AND VEGETABLES. Creamy French Dressing Ingredients 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons red wine, white wine or apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon dijon mustard clove of garlic, crushed (optional) Pinch of sea salt and ground black pepper to taste Balsamic vinegar dressing 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (this is also lovely with lemon infused EVOO) 2 tablespoons aged balsamic vinegar (for fructose free, choose a sugar-free raspberry vinegar instead Pinch sea salt and ground black pepper to taste Lemon dressing 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons lemon juice Zest one lemon, finely grated Pinch sea salt and ground black pepper to taste Method Place all ingredients in a small jar and shake until well combined. Store leftover dressing in the fridge. You can use these bases to add in other flavours like herbs and spices if you like. Try coriander, basil, parsley, chilli or ginger or orange which is great for inflammation too. Go as fancy as you like! Enjoy

09.01.2022 Raspberry & chia jam A quick an easy-to-make jam with no added sugar Ingredients 5 cups of frozen raspberries... 1/4 cup black or white chia seeds 1/2 an orange, juiced How to make In a mixing bowl, combine the frozen raspberries, chia seeds and orange juice before covering them and allowing the berries to defrost for about three hours at room temperature Once the berries are defrosted, using the back of fork, smash the berries up to a consistency that suits you for jam. If your chia seeds haven’t fully gelled up yet, allow the mixture to sit for another 20 minutes or so to let them absorb more moisture Serve your jam on top of your porridge, mixed through your overnight oats, on toast with peanut butter or in a chia seed pudding for double the chia fun! Store any leftovers in a clean, airtight jar for up to one week in the fridge.

08.01.2022 Changing seasons and I start to see more coughs, colds and sinus. Foods are a great way that may help reduce and expel phlegm and get you back to feeling fabulous. Fruits like Pineapple are very beneficial. The bioflavonoid bromelain in pineapple is a proteolytic enzyme (meaning it breaks down proteins). It is thought to boost immune function and has anti-inflammatory properties which help to open up the airways. In nutritional medicine, bromelain is often used to support si...nus conditions (reduces the swelling and mucus production) and helps to clear both upper and lower respiratory congestion. Great for digestion too. Other fruits to support immune function are berries and citrus fruits especially grapefruit. Grapefruit is wonderful for breaking down excessive mucus. lemon or lime juice in warm water to hydrate (which helps expel mucus) and support immune function. Vegetables Whilst fruit is good, vegetables are even better. Your dietary choices should be firmly focussed on consuming a range of fresh vegetables, lightly steamed or raw if you’d prefer. Fresh, in-season greens, are especially powerful immune boosters as they contain chlorophyll, such as cucumbers. Include as much garlic and onion as possible both are well known to support your immune function. The quercetin (another bioflavonoid) in onions is anti-inflammatory and also helps to break down mucus. Warm and Spicy Heat helps to thin and expel mucus. Warm vegetable based soups made with immune boosting bone broth. Using warming herbs and spices in your meals like cumin, ginger, cayenne, chilli, turmeric, oregano, thyme, sage and cinnamon is a great idea. Horseradish/wasabi is fantastic to make the nose run. Herbal teas are a lovely way to stay hydrated and help to expel mucus, ginger, turmeric, chamomile and peppermint. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) ACV is very antibacterial and helps to break down mucus congestion. If you like the taste, add a teaspoon to your herbal tea. Oily Fish Omega-3 rich fish like salmon, tuna, herring and sardines are my preferred sources of protein to reduce mucus. Omega-3’s support immune function and reduce inflammation and are a good choice to reduce your mucus load. Cod liver oil is great and has added benefits of vitamin A and D. Foods that are best avoided On the top of the list are (surprise, surprise) high sugar, processed foods as they impede immune function and promote inflammation. It is also worth avoiding dairy and soy products for the time being as both can be mucus. The quicker you try and get rid of mucus the quicker you will feel better.

07.01.2022 Magnesium is a mineral that is crucial to our body function. It can reduce fatigue, muscle soreness, relieve stress, keep blood pressure normal, bones strong and the heart rhythm steady. 76% of males and 86% females consume less than the RDI of magnesium. Magnesium is poorly retained in the body and is dependent on our daily dietary intakes or supplementation. Stress, toxicity, and inflammation deplete magnesium. It is a must for people exercising, cardiovascular health, PMT..., and lethargy. Different forms of magnesium vary in how they are absorbed through the gut which can effect its therapeutic efficiency. The best way for magnesium to be absorbed throught the gut is in the form of magnesium chelate, orotates, taurates, diglycinate, which are less likely to cause gastric side effects like diarrhoea from taking the cheaper magnesium oxide which has about 4% absorption rate. In my clinic I stock a few different magnesium powders, that can offer different nutrients like B vitamins, taurine, chromium and so have a number of benefits alongside the magnesium. As they are a practitioner only product they are generally better absorbed and a higher strength. For example Mag Opticell by Orthoplex has 310mg per heaped teaspoon of magnesium and Swisse Ultiboost 150mg per tablet, of only 1 type of magnesium, which is sometimes the reason why people will say I'm still getting cramps or headaches and I take 1 tablet daily, its just not enough to sustain the body when it is already depleted. Foods that contain magnesium are dark leafy greens, spinach, quinoa, brown rice, nuts, black beans, edamame, tofu, sesame seeds, avocado, kefir, yogurt, figs, bananas, dark chocolate. Also you may want to try a topical magnesium spray(magnesium chloride)for aches and pains. Have a think is your body crying out for magnesium? Poor sleeping, muscle aches, headaches, low energy, you may be low in this fabulously important mineral. Take a powder or a good quality tablet with supporting minerals, vitamins and get the best out of your magnesium supplement.

05.01.2022 Is margarine or butter healthier? For me, it’s butter all the way. Why? Well when I look at the ingredients on the back of butter there is only 3 ingredients, cream, salt, water. The ingredients in margarine it’s considerably longer, take a look and I’m sure you will start questioning how this can be healthier for you. Regular margarine eg Meadow Lea (12 ingredients) ...Continue reading

05.01.2022 That time of the year when I remind you to start taking Cod liver oil. It’s great for winter colds but what are the other benefits of cod liver oil? It is one of the best sources of omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), and it contains relatively high amounts of vitamin A and vitamin D. Cod liver oil comes only from the livers of cod. It contains less omega-3 fatty acids than regular fish oils, but more vitamins A and D....Continue reading

04.01.2022 Thump your way to a stronger immune system. Behind the sternum or breast bone sits the thymus gland. It’s part of the lymphatic system and is responsible for maturing infection fighting white blood cells (T cells) made in our bone marrow. T cells are the hunters and destroyers for the immune system. The thymus gland begins to shrink after puberty and is replaced by fat! What tha... It is hampered by physical and emotional stress and the overuse of medicine. Tapping or thum...ping the area over the thymus gland awakens the bodies energy, the vibration helps the immune system and increases strength and vitality. When we are stressed or sick our chest/throat tightens and we try to grasp or rub the chest. Think of a gorilla who thumps his chest as he enters a battle, possibly to stimulate the thymus, release fear, increase energy and to prepare the immune system for injury. Worked for Tarzan. As we go into the cold and flu season why not try and boost your immune system, strength and vitality with a quick tap 1-4 x’s daily. There are a number of different tapping techniques. Take a couple of deep breaths. Use your fingertips or the inside of a closed fist and tap up and down on your sternum. Some people like to do one slightly firmer tap, pause and follow with two lighter taps for 15-20 seconds, a few minutes its up to you. Some like to do positive affirmations at the same time. You may feel a little tingling or a feeling of joy-after all the thymus thump is said to be the happiness point. There are plenty of videos online to give you examples of different thymus tapping. If you feel low, are having a panic attack, or a cold, go ahead and ‘wake up’ the thymus gland! A great way to start or finish the day. See more
