25.01.2022 This is one of the unlucky queens that came out second best in the race to the throne. Can you see the white substance at the bottom of the cell? This is royal jelly. Bee larvae develop into queen bees when they are exclusively fed a diet of royal jelly (not honey and pollen like worker bees). The royal jelly and the absence of pollen result in the development of her reproductive organs. The royal jelly also helps to keep her safely anchored to the bottom of the cell that she develops in. RIP Queenie. #royaljelly #queenbee #lovehalfbarrelhoney #ilovebees

20.01.2022 In case you were snoozing this morning and missed this...here I am chatting to Jessica from the ABC about...bees!!!

20.01.2022 Such a beautiful time of year! Checked in on the bees this afternoon to see how they are settling in and they are happy and straight to work! #almondgrove #almondpollination #ilovebees #beesecurity #foodsecurity #ilovebees #lovehalfbarrelhoney

17.01.2022 I just love these beautiful candles made by the talented Mel @littlebirdiecandles !! Created with real comb made by my clever bees!! They smell amazing too. Check out her feed for other great products to swoon over.

17.01.2022 A beautiful Winter's day in the Riverland today...lots of bees were out working in the sunshine. A beautiful sight! This little lady was foraging on some salvia in the Loxton playground. This variety is called Salvia Hot Lips and flowers for most of the year! #riverlandwinter #salvia #hotlips #bees #beesarecool

12.01.2022 Last honey harvest for the season! I have prepared my hives for winter so the bees are all bunkered down and keeping warm as best they can now waiting for warmer weather. The population in the hive reduces a lot during the cold weather as the bees will only get out of bed and forage in temperatures above 12 (pretty good rule to live by I reckon ). So I won't be disturbing them for awhile. Stay warm bees and I'll see you on the other side. #honeyharvest #winterbees #illmissyou #uncappingmachine

12.01.2022 A huge thank you to all the wonderful people who came out to support my Open Hive Day today! I really appreciate you making the time to visit and so glad many of you found a batch of honey you wanted to take home with you. Thanks again

09.01.2022 Isn't she the cutest little beekeeper you ever did see??? This is Annie. Her and her family are hosting Queen Matilda during spring to give their fruit trees a boost. Annie loved doing the inspection with me! I loved her curiosity and calmness around the bees. #hostahive #minibeekeeper #ilovebees

08.01.2022 Love it when friends send me pics of their breakfast! @trlisashaw How do you enjoy your Half Barrel Honey? I have sold out of honeycomb until Spring when the bees make some more. However, you can still find some at @cingrove and @applebeehealthbar!! 08.01.2022 Checked in on my nuc colonies today to see if they had successfully reared new queens. Check out my story to see how I mark them. I think one may have been a virgin queen as she looked quite small. We have had some rainy and windy weather this past week so she probably didn't get a chance to get out on her mating flights. Wondering whether I should have held off marking her until she had started laying. Was too excited to try out my new toy! Do any other beekeepers out there mark virgin queens or do you wait? Will the drones like her new bling or will they think she's too showy?? #queenmarking #matingflights #virginqueen #nucleuscolony #lovehalfbarrelhoney

07.01.2022 Love this idea!

06.01.2022 This is a swarm cell. This colony wants to swarm. Swarming is a bee colony's natural way of reproducing and happens during Spring when there is a lot of food around for the bees. Can you see the little egg at the bottom of the cup? The bees will feed this larvae a special diet of royal jelly so that a new queen develops and hatches. Before it hatches the current queen will leave the hive with a bunch of flying bees and find a new place to live. You might see the swarm hanging in a tree having a break while some of the Scout bees are out house hunting. If you see a swarm call a beekeeper to catch them safely. #queencup #swarmcell #beeegg #swarm #swarmcatching #callabeekeeper #callme

05.01.2022 I just love how one colony can store two different types of honey side by side. The Flow Hive @flowhive allows you to easily keep these variations separate. Regular extraction methods would see these getting mixed together in the extractor. This hive is loved by the lovely Sue at @sue_singingmagpieproduce . It is absolutely overflowing with bees! She has created a bee wonderland out there! #rawhoney #honeycolours #flowhive #honeyharvest #lovehalfbarrelhoney

05.01.2022 White lavender! So beautiful. What is in bloom in your garden right now? There is definitely a hint of Spring in the air. #lavender #bees #backyardbees

03.01.2022 A very talented local photographer...watch this space!
