25.01.2022 SELF-CARE. WE ALL NEED TO DO IT. Business owners and entrepreneurs are one of the high-risk groups of experiencing mental illness and mental health decline. I am not denying lighting candles, playing calming music or booking oneself in for a massage are helpful. But lets face it, these things are a luxury many cant afford for lack of time, money or other pressing demands (or people).... In a three part series, take a look at Part I of Self-Care Strategies and Business Owners to Prevent Burnout. These arent just prevention strategies for burnout and overwhelm. They can transform many parts of your work and personal life. Share with us your thoughts, questions and other strategies you feel are helpful. https://www.linkedin.com//self-care-strategies-business-/
25.01.2022 If you live remotely and have struggled with accessing psychological support, the accessibility has increased. Since September 1 2018, you can now access all 10 rebatable sessions provided on a Mental Health Care Plan from a GP, via video conferencing. People used to have to have one of their first four sessions as a F2F (not viable for someone who might live in the middle of nowhere and be struggling mentally to commute anywhere) and then only be able to access 7 out of the... 10 sessions as video-conferencing. Now all 10 sessions can be done via video-conferencing. However, you must live within certain regions to qualify. There is something called the Monash Model which illustrates the zones in which residents can access this. (e.g. within zones 4-7.)
23.01.2022 At the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, world champion Suzie ONeill was battling to defend her title for the gold medal in the 200m butterfly. The pressure was unimaginable. She was de-throned by American Misty Hyman in front of the eyes of hopeful Australians and the world.... Suzie watched the footage for the first time, 19 years later and broke down in tears. "I know in my mind I didnt fail but when I look at that I see failure." Even 19 years later. The brain and body keeps a record of what is unresolved. Even 19 years later. Elite athletes carry the memories, trauma, disappointment. They live with it and contain as much as they can, only to be subject to greater pressure, harder and higher demands. Senior leaders, managers and business owners can experience similar plights. The weight of responsibility and accountability is enormous. Left un-managed and unprocessed, the traumas can bear subconscious weight on future demands and responsibilities. All leaders can benefit from resourcing themselves with key mental skills to alleviate this. If you have not worked with a performance psychologist before, consider exploring its benefits. Get in touch with us to find out how. #performance #psychology #work #mentalhealth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ALvFF7KIbY

22.01.2022 Wouldnt it be nice if we could measure stress and overwhelm in units? And that what diffuses it could also be measured simply and easily? 1 unit of stress = 30 mins exercise 3 times a week 3 units of stress = 3 x exercise + 1 social outing/week... We arent really designed that way. What works for others doesnt necessarily work for you. Taking back the reins to restore and strengthen your mental and emotional health starts with recognising: what affects you, how it affects you, your thresholds, and developing your own unique tailored combat plan. Taking a spray and pray approach is never sound advice for running a business or pursuing goals of any kind. So why take that approach with your mental health and mindset???? Stay tuned for Part II of Self-care Strategies for Business Owners and Entrepreneurs coming shortly...

19.01.2022 ACHIEVING EMOTIONAL MASTERY.... Were unfortunately taught and conditioned from many influences that certain emotions are unhealthy and that we need to be moving toward feeling positive unicorns, pots of gold and rainbow feelings as often as we can. Stop and think about this. Why were we born with such a wide spectrum of capacity to feel such a wide range of emotions? Surely there is a reason for us experiencing these so-called negative, unpleasant emotions.....?... One choice, eight unpleasant feelings, 90 seconds. Coined the Rosenberg Reset, by Dr Joan Rosenbergs colleagues, when you learn and acquire the skills to receive, accept, experience what are so-called negative emotions, the game changes completely. In fact, you learn how to use these negative, unpleasant emotions to your best advantage. All emotions have benefit for us. ALL of them. As you experience this, your fear of experiencing unpleasant feelings will greatly diminish. In fact, you will come to see them as your friend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKy19WzkPxE&t=25s Learning how to better manage and regulate your emotions could greatly improve your life either at work, sport and/in your personal life. Dont hesitate to get in touch with us today. Helen x
18.01.2022 Resilience is a hot topic at the moment. 80% of Australian businesses are small businesses. They contribute significantly to the economy but also suffer some hard knocks along the way. Business owners are good at having business systems and processes in place, yet often dont have these in place to protect and promote their mental health and performance.... I ran a workshop yesterday to give business owners, entrepreneurs and senior leaders a four step process they can use repeatedly to build personal resilience so their businesses can keep ticking on: 1) Knowing our triggers - how to get familiar with things that will knock and derail us mentally and emotionally 2) Acknowledgement and acceptance - learning how to observe and regulate our unhelpful emotions, thoughts and behaviour 3) Shift - having short, sharp and quick ways to re-ignite momentum 4) Lift - how to easily adopt a growth mindset in the face of adversity, turn the wheels faster and regain momentum Yesterday attendees embraced this simple process as relevant to their business (and their staff) AND their personal lives. What mental game plan do you have in place for yourself and your team? #resilience #stress #highperformance #mentalhealth #mindset
16.01.2022 Between 1990 and 2013, the number of people suffering from depression and anxiety has almost doubled globally from 416,000,000 to 615,000,000. A wake-up call for personal self-management is not only well overdue. The implications of this in the world of commerce is astronomical. The World Health Organisation shared results of a study calculating and projecting the costs of managing and treating mental health in 36 countries between 2016-2030. The results were VERY interestin...g: "The estimated costs of scaling up treatment, primarily psychosocial counselling and antidepressant medication, amounted to US$ 147 billion. Yet the returns far outweigh the costs. A 5% improvement in labour force participation and productivity is valued at US$ 399 billion, and improved health adds another US$ 310 billion in returns." For those who are time-poor, financially challenged, and dont yet have the support of an organisation that supports their people through mental health issues, you can start developing your own internal resources to manage heightened stress, constant overwhelm and debilitating anxiety, there is help. I was asked again recently to share specific strategies and techniques for managing stress and anxiety. You dont have to wait to start the ball rolling. Remember your experience is 100% unique to you so finding a tailored strategy is key. Have a calming cup of tea and peruse my latest article. Some of these things youll feel open to, others you wont. 13.01.2022 At times like this, where we are urged to self-contain and isolate for the health and well being of ourselves and others we care for, we can feel terribly isolated and our mental health can suffer. Telehealth options, including both phone and video sessions are available through HDPPG. 13.01.2022 Directly converse to the Dunning-Kruger effect (cognitive bias in which people of low ability have illusory superiority and mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is), Imposter Syndrome is alive and well even in the minds of some of Australias world-class surgeons and medical specialists. Despite your competence and proof in the pudding you know your area of expertise and have demonstrated results to prove your competency, you still believe youre not g...ood enough and not worthy. Some of the work we do with medical specialists, executive managers and business owners to work through the mindset in operation here, includes what leading Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sarah Coll recommends covering here. If you every struggle with belief in your competence, take a look. Here are some tips toward turning that mindset around. https://www.abc.net.au//impostor-syndrome-how-to/10808038

10.01.2022 #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealth #highperformance #performancepsychology #mentalhealthawareness Ive had the pleasure to run mental health awareness workshops for statewide and national companies lately. Its honestly been a delight to not only increase awareness, but help people learn what to recognise for themselves, their thresholds, how to support others but also how to protect and enhance their mental health and performance.... The latest results from Medibio revealed from a comprehensive of 3400 employees across 41 businesses, depression has now taken over anxiety as being the most prevalent form of mental illness (in that population). Interestingly, 73% of mens responses put them the range for a clinical disorder diagnosis at the time of the survey or previously. Those same men were unaware they were unwell. According to psychologist researchers at Medibio, depression is estimated to cost Australia $12.6 billion. Start to turn the tables now. Start being proactive about your mental health monitoring and give yourself greater opportunities to thrive, not just survive. Youve got quality living to do!
07.01.2022 SENIOR MANAGERS and BUSINESS OWNERS ARE AT GREATER RISKS OF MENTAL HEALTH DECLINE. And the incidence is higher than last year. In fact 52% of survey respondents aged 18-29yrs and 32% of those aged 30-29, regret starting their business because of the emotional, financial and family burdens it has caused in their lives. ... 05.01.2022 Men and women look for different things when it comes to work satisfaction. A recent study by Dr Rachel Morrison and Dr Kathryn Owler have published research in the New Zealand Journal of Human Resource Management which reflects this. Their research results reported women are more likely to seek a sense and feeling of competence in their work. They need to have an internal sense of belief they have the skills and ability to overcome new tasks and challenges. ... On the other hand, it appeared men gain fulfillment by challenging and being successful in tackling assignments which can be perceived to be out of their reach in the face of their current skill set and ability. As business owners and managers, consider this when recruiting and leading/managing and coaching your staff However, dont necessarily now put on blinkers that men are only looking for certain things and women are looking for certain things but realise there are differences. Exercise emotionally intelligent management and communication strategies that consider these and youll create a much more cohesive workforce on all levels. #worksatisfaction #genderdifferences #menatwork #womenatwork #jobsatisfaction (Photo courtesy of @rawpixel on Unsplash)

04.01.2022 Doing some work with medical specialists to reach higher accolades in their fields is such a challenging and rewarding journey. It is such a privilege to work with such individuals who are not only elite by choosing to be professionals in their chosen fields, but then to support them chasing the pinnacles of performance....their minds and capacity for greatness is sometimes unfathomable. And then to receive incredible expressions of appreciation and gratitude like this...onl...y blows us away. 03.01.2022 A lot of work I do encompasses helping clients come to terms with their unique experience and symptoms of anxiety. It IS different from person to person and its important we recognise such. One size does not fit all and treatment plans always need to be tailored to the individual. Recently, I was asked to complete a written piece providing advice for management of the same. https://www.lifehack.org/826375/how-to-manage-anxiety... If you know of anyone who you believe is suffering, heres some ways in which they can start the journey to turning their current experience around. Wishing you optimal mental health Helen x

02.01.2022 It was an honor to collaborate with a national IT recruitment company that strongly promotes managing mental health for wellbeing and performance. To provide true value to the company's clients, we recorded an educational conversation for them. Our focus was to cut through the noise of mass-marketed best practices and discuss what really is practical and effective for leaders, managers and employees:... What are growth mindset strategies, when and how do we apply them Why throwing employees into mindfulness training can often be a fruitless exercise and waste of money How to exercise self-care when in highly demanding roles Identifying why we procrastinate, its relationship with motivation and ways to transform this Recognising gender differences in the workplace, how to diffuse the divide in the workplace and remove gender from the equation altogether And so much more. It was a truly fascinating conversation.
01.01.2022 Good news on the mental health support front Private health insurers will cover telehealth consultations for psychology services during the COVID-19 outbreak....
