21.01.2022 IF THIS SOUNDS LIKE YOU, A VICTIM OF OUR MODERN WAY OF LIFE. A POSTURE ASSESSMENT AND REMEDIAL MASSAGE WORK MIGHT BE THE START OF CORRECTING THE ISSUE. A recent study by Kenneth Hansraj, MD, chief of spine surgery at New York Spine Surgery & Rehabilitation Medicine, confirmed what physical medicine and rehabilitation pioneer Rene Cailliet, MD, theorized three decades ago: The weight seen by the spine dramatically increases when flexing the head forward at varying degrees.1 ...Put simply, for every inch the head moves forward from its ideal gravitational center, it feels as if it weighs an additional 10 pounds . The concept is the same as holding a 10-pound weight close to the body, then extending the arm straight out in front of you. The weight does not change, but your brains perception of how heavy the weight feels does change, and so does the amount of effort required by the muscles, ligaments, and fascia responsible for supporting the weight.in this case, the head. With so many people spending hours daily peering down at digital devices, wear and tear on joints and connective tissues slowly whittles away at our uprightness. The good news is that todays bodyworkers and corrective exercise therapists are on the front line against this epidemic. The bad news is clients often wait too long to seek help, allowing time for the brain to map their aberrant forward-head postures. Call 0400 137 399 0r [email protected]

19.01.2022 Some stretches to help with a tight Piriformis muscle which some clients are needing to get some improved flexibility! It's the little muscle under your big glut muscles, if your butt is painful to touch higher up it will be this little muscle. Although it is small it is a very important muscle! SITTING CROSS-LEGGED. One of the easiest ways to keep... your hips open and stretch your piriformis muscle is by sitting cross-legged on the floor for several minutes a day. PIRIFORMIS CHAIR STRETCH. Another easy way to stretch out the piriformis, especially if you have a desk job, is to cross one leg over the other with your ankle resting on the knee of the opposite leg. Gently press down on the inside of the knee and slowly lean forward until you feel a mild stretch in the hips. LYING PIRIFORMIS STRETCH. A more intense stretch can be performed while laying on your back on the floor. Cross the right leg over the left, with the right ankle resting on the left knee. Slowly lift the left foot off the floor and toward you while you apply gentle pressure to the inside of the right knee. Hold 20 to 30 seconds, and repeat on the other side. ADVANCED PIRIFORMIS STRETCH - PIGEON POSE Start in a push-up position on your hand and toes. Slide your right knee forward toward your right hand. Angle your knee, so the outer ankle is touching the floor (see picture). Slide your left leg back as far as comfortable. Keep your hips square to the floor. You should feel a deep stretch in your right glutes (buttock), hip and the outer thigh. You can either stay up on your hands or fold forward and let your forearms rest on the floor in front of you or fully extend your arm in front of you. Breathe slowly and deeply from your belly. Hold the stretch 30 seconds to 60 seconds and release. Repeat on the other leg.

09.01.2022 Why having a posture assessments can determine the cause of pain. "The human body is built on and relies upon symmetry. During static postures and dynamic functional tasks, length, strength, and stability/mobility must exhibit delicate integration or balance. Side-to-side and anterior-posterior balance are both important to healthy, normal function. Without symmetry, a state of asymmetry occurs which may eventually lead to injury, imbalance, and dysfunction. Normal functional... activities are rhythmic and reversing, which both establishes and depends upon balance and interaction between stabilizers, agonists, and antagonists. Often, athletes become stuck in patterns of movement that do not promote symmetry and reversal, such as tasks that require rotation in one direction, including pitching, tennis, and golf. Determining alterations in symmetry or the inability to reverse a movement is the first step to successfully addressing dysfunction. Treatment must facilitate movement in both directions in order to enhance normal functional movement and provide adequate postural responses to motion. What this means is that the injury or pain you are suffering from could be caused by being out of alignment. So get a postural assessment done to check on your alignment!

04.01.2022 What Are the Benefits of Sports Massage Therapy? Last Updated: Feb 16, 2014 | By Heather M. J. Emerson Sports massage is a type of massage that can alleviate pain occurring in certain parts of the body, which can be caused by too much physical activity. This type of massage was originally developed to serve athletes as a way to prevent and relieve injuries, but both athletes and non-athletes can gain physiological and psychological benefits from receiving sports massage thera...py. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness Prevention Sports massage therapy can prevent or relieve delayed onset muscle soreness. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, delayed soreness typically begins to develop 12 to 24 hours after the exercise has been performed. DOMS may produce the greatest pain between 24 and 72 hours after the exercise has been performed. Sports massage therapy prevents delayed onset muscle soreness by encouraging blood and lymph flow throughout the body, preventing muscle fatigue. Stress and Pain Reduction Sports massage therapy can help a person manage stress. When a person receives a sports massage, their body releases neurotransmitters called endorphins. According to American Spa, endorphins are released by two centers of the brain known as the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, and they act as the body's natural pain reliever. Endorphins that are released due to receiving a sports massage help to decrease anxiety, provide pain relief, improve mood and enhance a person's state of well-being. See more

02.01.2022 HOW THE POWERHOUSE KEEPS YOU GOING: A LOOK AT THE GLUTES. By Cameron Weber ... Do you constantly have reoccurring lower body injuries? Do you suffer from intermittent lower back soreness? Are you a little slower off the mark? If you answer yes to these questions then its time to see if your gluteals are activating and working efficiently. Due to our lifestyle the glutes are almost always asleep, we spend more time sitting on them and not enough time working on them. Glutes are very rarely activated during lifting or everyday activities, this is because the compensation pattern to get around using the glutes are so engraved. With poor gluteal function, performance can be impaired and injury potential increased. Glutes are known as stabilising muscles of the hip but also work at controlling the knee and the inhibition of gluteus maximus is also related to lower back pain. Weak or delayed activation of the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius is a major contributor to injuries and overuse injuries such as hamstring strains, lower back pain, anterior knee pain, anterior hip pain. In addition, it contributes to lower body malalignment by allowing internal rotation of the femur which increases the chances of ACL sprains, ankle instability and ITB problems. We have to remember that the glutes are a local stabiliser, global stabiliser and for athletes a global mobiliser. Remember the glutes are our powerhouse they can be the largest and most powerful muscles in the body and we should be using them to their potential.
