(And YES, as we've said all week - it's definitely still school holidays!!! So you won't be marked or get detention for getting the wrong answer!)... Now for today's question. It's a case of last, but definitely not least... Q: Is SELF-CARE... a) A buzzword that's trending on Insta b) Absolutely necessary & must be priority, or c) A luxury A: Stay tuned for later tonight to see the answer - although I'm definitely hoping you all know this one!! 24.01.2022 The Australian Resuscitation Council has put out their recommendations for a Community Resuscitation during COVID. The following key points apply only if the recommendation from Public health is that you wear a face mask in your local area: You should keep your mask in place during the resuscitation You should look but not listen and feel for breaths... You should provide chest only compressions and consider placing a light cloth or clothing over the person's mouth If there is no recommendation from Public Health in your area to wear a face mask you assume the person is very unlikely to have COVID and proceed as per the traditional DRSABCD including rescue breaths if you are happy to provide them. Remember providing CPR to someone can double their chance of survival!!!
23.01.2022 My children amaze me with how calm they can stay when someone is hurt or injured... by giving them a simple plan to follow and role modelling how to be calm they are usually the first one to step in to help their friends. Due to a cancellation there is now 1 family spot left in my kid's first aid course this Sunday. Let me teach your children age appropriate first aid so they can feel calm and confident in a first aid situation. Get in quick as this course had been sold out for weeks....
22.01.2022 http:// POP QUIZ - ANSWER TIME! It's the last day of our pop quiz, which has been a bit of fun this week! Earlier today, we asked this question... Q: Is SELF-CARE...... a) A buzzword that's trending on Insta b) Absolutely necessary & must be priority, or c) A luxury A: It is B! Self-care is absolutely necessary and needs to be a priority for all of us. Self-care is so incredibly valuable every single day. Because if we’re not caring for ourselves, what are we doing?! What’s become amplified in this worldwide crisis, is the need to check-in regularly on the state of your health. Not only does good mental health play a vital role in keeping your immune system strong, it also helps you ride the rollercoaster of life. And of course, we also want to take great care of ourselves physically, to stay healthy & strong. Here are my top tips for taking care of yourself: EAT A RAINBOW! Make sure you’re eating a range of nutritious foods so that you’re getting all that your body needs. MOVE YOUR BODY: garden, do yoga, go for a walk, run, dance around the house GET OUTSIDE, breathe in the fresh air and soak up some Vitamin D. BUILD a new routine for yourself, routine is so important when things feel uncertain and can bring a sense of purpose and security EVERY DAY, do something that brings a smile to your face, something just for you. REACH OUT to family and friends to make sure you are still connecting with people, ask them how they are and share with them your feelings DON'T LIVE on social media. Whilst it has some great info, it can breed hysteria and increase feelings if anxiety. In fact take a full day (or longer) break from it sometimes!! BE KIND to yourself. Lower or let go of expectations when you need to. And, don’t be afraid or ashamed to SEEK HELP. There are so many fabulous resources available and it’s so important to make use of them. Thanks for tuning in to our pop quiz this week & we hope you got 3 out of 3! To read more about this, head to our recent blog... https://head2toefirstaid.com.au//why-handwashing-and-self/
22.01.2022 http:// POP QUIZ! Yesterday, we kicked off our Pop Quiz, because we thought it was time for some fun! Now we want to ask about something else that 2020 has well & truly highlighted! (And YES, it's definitely still school holidays!!! So you won't be marked or get detention for getting the wrong answer!)... Now for today's question... Q: If you need to sneeze, is it BEST to: a) Use a hanky or tissue b) Catch it in your hand, or c) Use your elbow A: Stay tuned for later tonight to see the answer - although I'm hoping you all know this one!! Or, if you're a bit impatient...maybe you can figure it out from this vid... 22.01.2022 Would you hesitate to call an ambulance if you were involved in a medical incident? In my capacity as a Nurse and First Aid Trainer, I have noticed that sometimes people can be reluctant to call an ambulance. But there is no doubt at all in my mind that calling an ambulance without hesitation can save lives.... Click the link below to read my thoughts about why people are sometimes reluctant to call an ambulance, and how we can reverse this worrying trend. https://head2toefirstaid.com.au///ambulances-hesitant-call
21.01.2022 http:// POP QUIZ! This week we thought we'd have a bit of fun & have our very own pop quiz! After all, 2020 has brought us some pretty big lessons in life and the land of first aid. But YES, it's definitely still school holidays!!! So you won't be marked or get detention for getting the wrong answer! ... Let's start with an easy one... Q: How long do you need to wash your hands for, to reaalllyyy wash your hands? Bonus point too if you can remember how long I spent learning this when I started studying nursing! A: Stay tuned for later tonight to see the answer - although I'm hoping you all know this one!! While you're waiting, this is a great vid to watch & show the kids as to why you need to wash EVERY part of your hands. Not just a quick swish! And psstttt, you can also find the answer over here on our recent blog... https://head2toefirstaid.com.au//why-handwashing-and-self/

19.01.2022 While the weather in spring is being predictably unpredictable, those glorious summer days are not too far away! Hot weather means plenty of time in the pool, whether at home or the local swim centre. Sadly, many Australians lose their lives in water every year, including children drowning in backyard pools. Are you confident that you could provide CPR if you needed to in an emergency?... Click the link below to read more about pool safety, and the importance of keeping your resuscitation skills up to date. https://head2toefirstaid.com.au/20//21/drowning-prevention
18.01.2022 No matter how much you love what you do, some weeks seem longer than others. When you are having one of those weeks it is amazing to get feedback like this. It centers you, helps you see that you are meeting your aims and sharing your passion for training. This is only one of the differences of Head2toe First Aid. We always choose quality training over a high volume of people. We always aim to give a training experience rather than just help you tick a box. Perhaps that... is why we are fully booked for Nov with only a few spots left until the end of the year. If that sounds like the training you need for yourself or your staff, drop us a line.

18.01.2022 Today is the anniversary of the day my daughter learnt 2 valuable lessons: Why they should never be in the pool without an adult watching (even if they are good swimmers) Why flips into the pool is not something that I allow in my pool Hopefully we can get through Halloween safely this year.... Stay safe everyone!

13.01.2022 What are you up to tonight? Are you having an exciting night like me?... Movie in bed with my daughter, rolling bandages and slings while the boys watch the footy final
12.01.2022 Are you planning a camping trip these holidays? There are certain things I always add to my basic first aid kit to deal specifically with my family’s most common camping mishaps. That way I can sit back and relax, knowing I have my bases covered from a first aid perspective.... Click the link below to find out exactly what I pack, and which are the most common camping incidents when it comes to first aid. https://head2toefirstaid.com.au//what-to-pack-in-a-camping
12.01.2022 We are away camping enjoying some family time. It wouldn't be a camping trip without an injury for my wild child... This one was a little worse than usual... we got a call over the walkie talkie the other evening from her newly made friends... "Aimee has fallen really badly..." She is my wild child, but also my tough one, so in the minute it took for us to get to where she had been balancing and walking on fallen trees, she was up and walking/hobbling to us.... She was putting on a brave face but had grazed her back and fallen on her outstretched arm which was pretty sore. No obvious break so I treated for a sprain with RICE... and I watched her. Why am I telling you this? Because the watching is called a secondary assessment and it plays such an important role in first aid. As parents, my husband and I were perfectly positioned to do this assessment because we knew her "normal." So what was I observing?? Her body language: lots of fake smiles and grimaced Her movements: when she didn't know I was looking I saw her avoid using her right hand at all costs Her behaviour: this was the big one, she sat quietly, she didn't play with friends and she was pretty withdrawn. She regularly asked for pain relief. All of these things are so far from normal for our daughter, our rough and tumble kid with a high pain threshold (even 5 staples to the head last year didn't keep her down). So with all this in mind we decided to bring into play the last "R" in RICER... refer. She needed an x-ray to make sure it was a bad sprain and not a fracture. We were in the middle of nowhere and the local country hospitals XR was broken () so we ended up having a long day with over 300kms to find out it wasn't broken. Was it a wasted day?? No, because based on the pain, body language and change in behaviour it needed follow-up. Now we can go back to enjoying our holiday... hopefully with no more injuries....
11.01.2022 It is always lovely to receive positive feedback, but it is especially nice when people tell me they will be coming back because first aid is like any skill, it can get a bit rusty if you don’t use it regularly. Thank you Rachael, I’m so pleased that you have regained confidence in your first aid skills. Is it time to brush up on your first aid skills? Please visit my website now for details of upcoming courses: https://head2toefirstaid.com.au
11.01.2022 Wow, what a huge year 2020 turned out to be! When I first started Head2Toe First Aid four years ago, my goal was to train at least 100 people in my first year of business. In 2020 I have regularly trained over 100 people in a WEEK!... This has happened because you, my loyal supporters, keep coming back AND recommending me to others. It warms my heart to know that this business has grown largely because of word-of-mouth recommendations, and I cannot thank you enough for continuing to support me. Head2Toe First Aid will be taking a break from 18th December to 12th January, and I am looking forward to coming back recharged and refreshed and getting straight back into delivering classes. Please get in touch if First Aid training is on your 2021 to-do list.
10.01.2022 Our weather is heating up, it's so tempting to turn on that hose to cool off... but don't forget how hot the water sitting in the house can get. Remember the skin of a child is thinner than that of a healthy adult and will burn easier.
07.01.2022 I recently saw my first ever snake "in the wild" while cycling in the Reisling track in Clare. I have a huge fear of snake (I am from NZ) and I was pretty proud of how calm I stayed while swerving to avoid it. This was partly because I have spent time learning about snakes and snake bites. It's that time of the year to review some basics and this is a great post on snake bites. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2094305390612633&id=1025064834203366
06.01.2022 Summer is almost here, and it will be school holidays before we know it! While it can be tempting to wrap the kids in cottonwool, wounds, grazes and scrapes are a part of childhood that cannot be avoided no matter how careful you are. Now is the ideal time to check that your first aid kit is fully stocked with fresh supplies of non-stick dressings, betadine and antiseptic cream.... Click the link below for a refresher on how to deal with scrapes and grazes, and the signs that it is time to seek professional medical help. https://head2toefirstaid.com.au//childhood-scrapes-and-gra
06.01.2022 When your dog is so comfortable with Rona the manikin he snuggles up to her
06.01.2022 And One Last Tip for being a Happy Camper When you’re away (and this is if you are close to civilisation vs out in the bush), it pays to know what after-hours medical services you have access to, when the pharmacy is open and if the local doctor can come to you. Actually, here's 2 bonus tips!... With your Camping First Aid Kit don’t forget to check it before each trip to make sure all of your supplies are full and nothing is outdated. Plus, if you want to feel even more confident that you’ll know what to do if a first aid situation arises, come and refresh your skills at one of our upcoming First Aid Courses. (Check our Events Tab for more info!) And... Now that you’ve got the ultimate camping first aid kit packed, you've got the 3 apps we recommended yesterday & you know what will be open it’s time to hit the road and enjoy your holiday! If you want to read up more about the tips we've given this week, head to our blog... https://head2toefirstaid.com.au//what-to-pack-in-a-campin/
05.01.2022 We’ve all heard the old wives’ tale about peeing on a jellyfish sting, but did you know this can actually do more harm than good? Visit the link below to find out what you should ACTUALLY do if stung by a jellyfish, and other first aid myths. https://head2toefirstaid.com.au//first-aid-myths-fact-or-f
05.01.2022 It is always lovely to receive positive feedback, but it is especially nice when it reinforces that the way I teach is having an impact. I strongly believe it is important to teach the ‘why’ of first aid because If you understand what is happening, you are far more likely to remember what to do and feel confident when applying first aid. Thank you Mohsen, I’m so pleased that you received so much value from completing your first aid training.... Click the link below to find out more about our range of Nationally Recognised first aid training courses. https://head2toefirstaid.com.au
04.01.2022 http:// POP QUIZ - ANSWER TIME! This week we're having a bit of fun with a pop quiz & earlier today, we asked this question...and we kinda gave the answer away too!! Q: If you need to sneeze, is it BEST to:... a) Use a hanky or tissue b) Catch it in your hand, or c) Use your elbow And the answer is... A: Absolutely C! Sneeze into your ELBOW! When we cough and sneeze, tiny drops of germs fly into the air up to 4m. Yuck! You don't want to use your hands to CATCH germs and an elbow is even more effective than a hanky or a tissue. While it’s a bit gross, this video below makes it so clear why the elbow is the winner! As Jamie puts it so well It’s all on my arm & not on my hand, so I’m less likely to spread it around. So remember if you need to sneeze, use your ELBOW! To read more about this, head to our recent blog... https://head2toefirstaid.com.au//why-handwashing-and-self/
03.01.2022 Eek... Fri night funny. I was was just watching TV when I looked up and realised other people probably don't have this in their house!!! Poor Rona... we are renovating and she doesn't have many places to hide... the kids just load things on top of her and she doesn't complain ... Mental note to show you all how the back of my car looks with my manikins. I hope no one sees when I load the groceries
03.01.2022 Whilst we never want to hear about it... it's the start of "snake season" and snakes are on the move at the moment as you can see from this freaky video of a snake in Sellicks beach popping out of a shower grill!! https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=724229731509069 That means it's a great time to review snake bite first aid and also to discuss with your children what they should do if they see a snake.... You can find all of that info in a blog that I wrote for Kids In Adelaide https://kidsinadelaide.com.au/snake-bite-first-aid/
02.01.2022 We are well and truly into the warmer part of the year now, when plastic and metal playground equipment and rubber and synthetic grass playground surfaces can heat up rapidly and retain heat for long periods of time. Young children might not realise straight away that they have been burned. They may also be slow to pull away from the hot surface, which can result in quite severe burns. It is important to remember to test the heat of playground equipment and other surfaces bef...ore your children use them. Remember a child’s skin is thinner than an adult’s and so they burn quicker than us. If a burn does occur, it is important to act quickly to minimise the chances of infection and scarring. Click the link below to read about what to do if a burn does occur. https://head2toefirstaid.com.au//the-what-of-burn-first-aid
01.01.2022 Its a busy week... heading off to my 3rd course in 24hrs (4th for the week), taking Rona and Rona1 out for an outing. So far this week I have delivered a CPR course, a First Aid course, a manual handling course and tonight Parent first aid. 1 more first aid and parent first aid to finish off the week!!! It's a busy one but that means more confident first aiders out there. We are all but fully booked until the new year
