14.01.2022 Yesterday the Media Road Safety Unit of South Australia Police launched a new mass media advertising campaign aimed at drivers who decide to get behind the whee...l under the influence of alcohol. The new anti-drink driving campaign Selfish Prick will run across TV, radio, billboards, trams, social media and digital platforms and taps into the increased social stigma and unacceptability of drink driving in the community. Extensive research, which included interviews with people who admitted to drink driving, revealed that convenience is the prevailing reason for choosing to drive rather than take alternative transport or stay at a friend’s place after drinking. Wanting to sleep in their own bed, wanting to have their car available in the morning or wanting to save money rather than pay for a taxi were amongst the reasons given for deciding to drive after drinking, despite the known risk of being caught or getting involved in a crash. The campaign targets men between 20-40 years, who are the demographic most represented in drink driving statistics. The phrase Drink Drivers are Selfish Pricks was thoroughly tested on representatives of the target audience and was deemed to be influential, impactful and likely to encourage self-reflection and behavior change. Members of the public were also surveyed to determine if the phrase was too offensive, and results demonstrated overwhelming support for the bold and ‘no excuses’ approach. Over the past five years 14% of all fatal crashes and 8% of all serious injury crashes in SA involved at least one driver or rider with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above the legal limit.
