25.01.2022 Feels like the weather is warming up again, and we all know what that means...
25.01.2022 Today’s morning crew enjoyed the generous expanses of Como Park! Henry, Bunny, Peggy and Winnie sniffed, ran, fetched and mingled to their heart’s content We never used to come to Como, but recently we’ve been really enjoying this spot. There’s a great big grassy hillside which makes for a solid cardio workout ... Everyone came away from today’s adventure totally pooped, and there wasn’t the faintest peep in the party bus the whole way home!
24.01.2022 Is your dog a super sniffer? For Fred & Barney, sniffing is life! You’d think they’d be at a loss if they had to wear face masks like the rest of us in Melbourne But being Foxhound X Bloodhounds, they have some of the most powerful snouts going around ... Bloodhounds have 300 million scent receptors - by comparison, most dogs have about 220 million. And humans? A meagre 5 million! Dogs can sniff out some truly incredible things. Canine Cognition Professor Alexandra Horowitz found that in the same way we could detect a teaspoon of sugar in our coffee, dogs could detect a teaspoon of sugar in a million gallons of water... That’s two Olympic sized swimming pools So, even if dogs did have to wear face masks... they’d do absolutely nothing to stop Fred & Barney from reading the news
23.01.2022 Here’s some Monday magic to kick start your week!
21.01.2022 This reminds me of Milo and Otis, one of my all-time favourite movies as a kid
20.01.2022 SEE YOU IN 6 ! Following directions from DHHS and Business Victoria, we are now closed until 13th September Although it was very safe for us to continue waking as we had established a contactless service and strong safety measures, we understand the need to reduce general movement in the community to control Covid-19 ... Whilst we’re very sad and will miss our four-legged friends (and their families!), we are pleased to be part of the big Victorian fight against this dreadful virus Thank you to our amazing clients and friends for offering incredible support throughout 2020 - we feel incredibly lucky to have you all Stay safe, take care and remember what’s on the horizon. For us, it will be waggy-tail reunions with our canine companions and lots of fun adventures across magnificent Melbourne - we can’t wait Katie (& Mark) with Ralph!
20.01.2022 The many faces of Beau... part 2 For every photo we post on Instagram, we probably have a hundred others. No joke! We often find ourselves scrolling back through the weeks and zooming in on pictures to get a close up look at facial expressions ... Would you believe this isn’t our first collage of Beau the Vizsla! He is possibly one of the most expressive dogs we’ve ever known!
19.01.2022 Reminiscing fun times! It’s fascinating how dogs have their own interests, friendships and personalities - every K9 is truly unique Here’s a replay of our nimble Dalmatian friend Euro darting and dodging Ben and Hendrix the Ridgebacks at Darling Park ... These 3 mates love nothing more than playing together, and Euro does a great job of keeping his buddies guessing as he has a much tighter turning circle it seems! Kelpies Frank and Patti are also much loved members of this crew, but they balance their time socialising with hunting flying things After all, when you’re a working dog you’ve got to live up to your heritage and get the job done! What’s your dog’s favourite thing to do at the park?
16.01.2022 Dogs to the rescue!!!
15.01.2022 Nailed the first day of Melbourne’s super-lockdown: Discovered an insanely good bakery and indulged in tasty treats Touched base with some awesome clients and friends... Cooked a gnarly Jamie Oliver Thai green chicken curry Conquered some boring but important chores Went on an adventure with my BFF and discovered a quarantine hut What did you get up to?
15.01.2022 Introducing our new kid on the block, Remi! Remi is a red tri-colour Australian Shepherd. Can you believe she is even cuter and more adorable in person than she is in pictures?! Australian Shepherds are magnificent dogs. In our experience, they’re very clever and buckets of fun. For example, when Remi catches the ball she often finishes with a theatrical camo roll! ... One thing Aussies need is lots of mental and physical exercise, otherwise they get bored! Remi’s Mum got us on board so she could make sure Remi gets everything she needs to feel relaxed After all, she is a beloved member of the family! We’re really looking forward to introducing Remi to some new friends tomorrow... she’s going to be over the moon! In the meantime, a little challenge... 10 points if you can tell us where Aussie Shepherds come from without asking Google!
14.01.2022 This is % true, but on the plus side, we’re cooking like pros now #caféheadsandtails
13.01.2022 A very relevant and helpful discussion around Puppy socialisation during Covid restrictions YES you can still (and should still) socialise your puppy at this time! It is absolutely possible to do this safely and in line with distancing requirements.... Socialisation is about providing positive and safe exposure to a variety of things so your puppy builds their confidence in life. It’s the gentle process of teaching your puppy to accept the unusual When you imagine being a puppy and experiencing everything as new for the first time - it sounds very overwhelming! Some natural canine reactions to feeling overwhelmed and unsafe: cowering, barking, growling, running away, and even biting As your puppy’s teacher you can make socialisation a comfortable and fun process where your puppy learns how generalise the things they and into their mental category of acceptable things. It is a managed and supportive process where you provide active guidance to your puppy as they learn and interpret the world Positive socialisation is vital to any puppy (especially between 8-16wks) and has a lifelong impact. It directly affects how your puppy will react to other dogs, people, the Vet, the car, and life in general Socialise your puppy properly and you will help to create a nice big comfort zone for your dog which leads to them being happy, relaxed, and well-adjusted throughout life
08.01.2022 Happy National Dog Day! Did you know that on 26th August every year we have a special day just to celebrate the magnificence of dogs? This day was originally founded in 2004 to bring attention to the number of dogs in rescue, and also to recognise all the incredible dogs in service to humans ... Put simply, dogs are the best and we’re lucky to have them Here’s me with one of my best buddies Chaser before 2020 got crazy It’s such a shame we can’t enjoy National Dog Day with all our four-legged besties this year, but you can help by spoiling them on our behalf! Give your dog an extra treat Take them for a BIG walk Let them splash in a puddle Give them a belly scratch Play a game with them Tell them you love them! Whatever you do, we hope you have a wonderful day with your canine companion!
08.01.2022 Did you know we dogs of all kinds? Snowy’s a little legend who comes adventuring with us on Thursdays - here she is photobombing her mate Harry Shkaboonga As the saying goes, great things come in small packages ... Snowy has a larger than life personality, and in case you’re wondering... she has no problem at all keeping up with the big guys! One of the many things love about what we do is seeing different breeds and sizes of dogs come together to have a jolly good time
06.01.2022 Literally the first walk on the first day of lockdown 2.0, and here’s Beau the Vizsla kissing a Dalmatian. I’m starting to think the dogs are showing off!
06.01.2022 Morning all! I think judging by Beau’s face, he may be a bit disappointed he doesn’t have an awesome mask like mine Thank you so much to Henry’s Mum for making this lovely soft mask for me! It’s so nice on my skin, and it’s pretty too! What kind of mask are you wearing?
01.01.2022 WE’RE OPEN As we head into another lockdown tonight, we’re glad to reassure you all that we’ll be continuing to visit our four-legged friends as normal What we do is very safe, as we spend our time outdoors, and the only close contact we need to have is with dogs ... We are following all of the health guidelines, and have very proactive safety measures in place to protect ourselves and our clients, and ensure we are doing our part for the wider community It’s an honour to keep supporting our Heads & Tails families during these difficult times by ensuring their canine companions still receive the exercise, socialisation, and love they need to be happy! Katie + Mark
01.01.2022 2020 might be a crazy year, but it’s not going to spoil our fun! Over the ten years we’ve been walking dogs, this has definitely been our hairiest yet It’s been tricky to know how to navigate the Covid-19 curveball, but then we realised... we’ve been fielding balls for a long time ... We’re proudly continuing to support our four-legged friends and their families by providing a high-quality and safe service We have lots of measures in place enabling us to go contactless - for instance, we collect nearly all dogs from the backyard We’ve got human distancing down to a fine art... and masks, gloves, and sanitiser are a core part of our kit these days, along with our dog treats, poo bags, and toys! So far none of the dogs have so much as batted an eyelid at our new masks. I’m guessing this means we must REALLY smell like dog people
01.01.2022 Here’s Milo & Baci loving their walks over the past few weeks They always give us the happiest greeting when we arrive - they’re so excited to get out and play, it’s a massive highlight of their week No prizes for guessing who is the ball fanatic between these two... although Milo enjoys a few goes, Baci is very quick and will even artfully extract it from Milo’s chops if he catches it first ... I guess this goes to show sibling rivalry isn’t just a human phenomenon!
