20.01.2022 People usually use cannabis because they want to feel something different, and sometimes they do. But using cannabis can also affect your health. You might find that cannabis makes you feel much worse especially if you already have challenges with your mental health. Sometimes cannabis can make feelings of anxiety, panic or paranoia more intense. Young people who use cannabis are at risk of developing mental health issues. It may also increase the risk of psychosis in some ...people. Psychosis is when you start to believe strange things or see and hear things that aren't there. The risk of developing psychosis can be even higher if you start using cannabis when you are young. Your risk is also higher if other people in your family have had mental health challenges. If your cannabis use is starting to affect things that matter like your mental health, wellbeing or your friendships it can be a good idea to get help. You can talk to someone about your options and look at different ways of cutting down or stopping your use. For more information: https://headspace.org.au//what-is-cannabis-and-the-effect/ The Cannabis Clinic provides confidential assessment, treatment and support for people concerned about their own cannabis use or that of their children or family. The clinics are staffed by qualified health professionals and supported by medical staff where required. To book an appointment contact the Intake Line on 1300 662 263 See more
16.01.2022 Meet our staff #3 Name: Becky Where you were born/grew up?- I was born in Fort Worth, Texas but moved from an early age and grew up in Massachusetts, USA. Your role at headspace? Dietitian How long you’ve been at hs Coffs? I’ve been with headspace since 2015. ... The things you do in your free time to look after your own mental health/ headspace tips? I like to read, spend time with my 1 year old daughter and husband, and play with our 2 dogs! One of my dogs is deaf so I’ve been trying to learn some sign language to teach to him. He actually is more obedient than my hearing dog. Headspace tips?- We’re learning more and more about nutrition and it’s role in mental health! If there’s one tip when it comes to nutrition, I would say eat more fibre! Fibre helps encourage the growth of bacteria in your gut which in turn produce short chain fatty acids that play a range of roles in supporting overall health. You can find fibre in plant based foods such as fruit and vegetables, wholegrains including oats and barley, legumes (think beans, peas, lentils and chickpeas) and starchy foods like potatoes, pasta or rice (extra fibre benefit if it has been cooked and cooled) Why you are passionate about or like working with young people? - I love how young people just keep it real. They’re not afraid to be open and honest, which I find really refreshing. Something that most people don’t know about you until now? (eg. hidden talent, special interest/ hobby or something amazing you have done etc.) I love sharks. Two years ago I had the amazing opportunity to cage dive with great white sharks. It was incredible to see 5 great whites up close and be a part of their world (from the safety of a cage). See more
16.01.2022 One major transition that most young people experience relates to what happens after leaving secondary school, and this can bring significant changes and challenges. Everyone responds differently to change. Some people find it exciting and full of opportunities while others feel stressed and overwhelmed, or a combination of these things. Even changes that you’re looking forward to can cause some worries. Whatever your reaction is, it’s OK to feel this way. Check out our tips for managing change here: https://fal.cn/3c35x

09.01.2022 Stress is often described as feeling overloaded, wound-up, tense and worried, and occurs when we face a situation we feel we can’t cope with. While stress is usually referred to as a negative experience, not all stress is bad. Some stress can be helpful, motivating us to get a task finished, or spurring us to perform well. However, if stress is ongoing or the stress response continues over a long period, the effects of stress can impact negatively on our physical and mental health, so you may need to talk to someone. Find out more about stress here: https://www.psychology.org.au/for-/Psychology-topics/Stress
