17.01.2022 It’s Gemma’s turn for the strengths treatment. Her top 5 are: #1 Not overthinking things there’s wisdom in keeping it simple sometimes. #2 Relentless positivity she can always find something to be happy about. #3 Able to express her needs like when she NEEDS to be on the bed and NEEDS to lie on top of you. #4 Social connection she prefers to be with people. All the time.... #5 Capacity for love she just loves and loves and loves and LOVES. See more

14.01.2022 I really love practical and easy-to-implement tools that support mental health and wellbeing and this article talks about another one of those. But I'm not completely sure what I think about this one. Although the idea of getting some 'distance' from your thoughts is really helpful, this article suggests doing that by thinking about yourself in the 3rd person. So instead of thinking "I'm a bit worried..." I would change that thought to "Sam is a bit worried...". Maybe it's because I think I'll end up like Elmo. But if it works, then I'm all for it. Let's see how it goes... https://www.psychologytoday.com//science-based-technique-c

13.01.2022 A quick and easy-ready article on strengths. I particularly like that it promotes the idea that we need balance focussing on strengths does not mean that we ignore negative experiences: We need negative experiences to learn from, motivate us, warn us, and help us grow. But those experiences should not define us. Reflecting on our strengths can help us offset those negative experiences, can help us figure out our natural best way to avoid them in the future, and can remind us that we have unique resources available to us in negative situations.

13.01.2022 I really love the mood meter from Yale's Center for Emotional Intelligence. We talk about this one in both our resilience and emotional intelligence workshops. It's a great tool for tapping into, and labelling, your emotions. They also have a pretty cool app - you can check it out here: https://moodmeterapp.com

13.01.2022 In keeping with our strength focus, this is Sam and Molly strutting their (COVID-Safe) stuff last week doing Mental Health First Aid for the lovely folks at Qld Cricket. It was a tiny group so we were able to do social distancing (plus masks when we needed to) but it was so nice to be able to do some face-to-face training again, and with such a great group of people.

12.01.2022 I really like some of the 'small fixes' this article talks about for promoting employee mental health, like not sending emails after hours!

09.01.2022 The physiological benefits of laughter "include an enhanced immune system, muscle relaxation, and reduced blood pressure". I love that this article talks about how you can train yourself to laugh more often. Just that concept amused me no end. I assume this would involve getting up early, getting into your clown clothes (active wear for laughter training, obviously) and watching Mr Bean videos...

08.01.2022 I'm sharing this article because a) it's continuing with the theme of laughter being important for our wellbeing; b) it's interesting that the researchers have concluded that laughter makes us feel like we belong in a group and believe its purpose is to build trust the way mutual grooming does for primates and c) how freakin' cute is that baby??? https://ideas.ted.com/meet-a-scientist-with-a-most-deligh/

07.01.2022 Okay, it’s time to talk strengths for the last (and possibly most complex) member of the Head Strong team, Candy. Candy’s strengths are: #1 Clear and direct communication she doesn’t mess around, she lets you know exactly what she wants and when she wants it (which is almost always RIGHT NOW). #2 Independence she’s her own cat and doesn’t just go along with the crowd. #3 Capacity for self-care she knows how much sleep she needs and where the best napping places are.... #4 Intelligence she doesn’t suffer fools (or annoying dogs) gladly. #5 Structure she’s good at sticking to a routine and really doesn’t want anything to mess with it. 02.01.2022 It’s Strengths Week here at Head Strong! Well, technically it started on Friday when we posted about the Authentic Happiness Questionnaire Centre (https://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/testcenter) and Sam’s results on the VIA Character Survey but we didn’t think of it until just now. Today we have Molly’s top 5 strengths (the two photos are of Molly demonstrating # 2 and 3, leadership and perspective wisdomobviously ). #1 Social intelligence - You are aware of the m...otives and feelings of other people. You know what to do to fit in to different social situations, and you know what to do to put others at ease. # 2 Leadership - You excel at the tasks of leadership: encouraging a group to get things done and preserving harmony within the group by making everyone feel included. You do a good job organizing activities and seeing that they happen. #3 Perspective wisdom - Although you may not think of yourself as wise, your friends hold this view of you. They value your perspective on matters and turn to you for advice. You have a way of looking at the world that makes sense to others and to yourself. #4 Humor and playfulness -You like to laugh and tease. Bringing smiles to other people is important to you. You try to see the light side of all situations. #5 Capacity to love and be loved - You value close relations with others, in particular those in which sharing and caring are reciprocated. The people to whom you feel most close are the same people who feel most close to you. See more
