25.01.2022 Absolutely great advice for all horse owners! I often find that it is incredibly difficult for a horse owner/trainer to be able to assess the health of their horse's teeth and thus also how well their dentist is actually taking care of their horse's oral health! This below is a great guideline!

25.01.2022 The easiest teeth of all. Not everyone can safely see their horses cheek teeth (back teeth) however your horses incisors (front teeth) are easily observed wit...h a small amount of effort. Anyone can identify a major malocclusion (abnormal alignment of the upper & lower teeth) such as Picture 1 but what is often missed is the early stages of a forming malocclusion. In picture 2 you can see the areas indicated are overlong but appear to be only a minor problem. In reality, they are already headed for Picture 1s problems. In Picture 3, I have completed the first stages of corrections to Picture 2. Although these incisors are not perfect yet with one more visit they will be (and will only remain that way through regular quality maintenance) whereas the incisors in Picture 1 will now take several years of staged corrections to return them to a balanced state. It may take even longer depending on the depth of the live pulp from the occlusal surface as indicated by the secondary dentin coloration. While there are a lot of arguments about incisor corrections the way I look at it is this: In most cases when the mandible (lower jaw) is in the neutral position, incisors are the only teeth in contact. This means whichever incisor malocclusion your horse has will dictate the position of the mandible in relation to the maxilla (upper jaw). If the mandible is held off centre to the left or right or has caudal or rostral (backward or forward) pressure it can have a large impact on the TMJ (jaw joint). I suggest you have a talk with your bodywork professional and have them explain the impact this has on the rest of your horses comfort and wellbeing. Have you ever had a filling that was a little too high that held the rest of your arcade apart? Have you ever tried standing around for hours with your jaw held offset and started to feel the impact on other parts of your body? Now try doing this for your whole life until someone helps you out, and youll start to get the picture. Start early and keep your problems small.

24.01.2022 This little guys has certainly come a long way since his first trim in December. He had 3 trims so far. He presented with mechanical Laminitis , the hoof capsule was getting so long that it was pulling away from the pedal bone stretching the laminae . He is a happy camper now.

11.01.2022 A lot of dental practitioners seem to advocate that working on incisors is not necessary. I think most of those same people would agree an incisor adjustment is... needed in this case (at least I hope). So here is my question: why does it have to be extreme before we address it? Wouldn't this same horse have benefited from incisor work years ago when the problem was mild? Whatever happened to logic?

08.01.2022 A heads up that Head 2 Hoof Sync will be hosting a MANOLO MENDEZ CLINIC in September. This will be the only Manolo clinic run in Perth this year that will be open to the public. These lessons usually fill within the first few days so please contact us ASAP if you would like to be put on the first options list for a lesson! 08.01.2022 ** PHOTOS IN COMMENTS** It is often thought that feeding on the ground is best for horses but Sharon May Davis has always promoted 'Hay high feeding'. This encourages the horse to stand square and engage the core muscles to elevate the base of the neck and front of the ribcage, stretching the back forward and upward in self carriage. This also helps to straighten the naturally crooked horse and foreleg dominance. Horses naturally graze with one leg forward, which is fine fo...r horses who are not worked or ridden but the ridden horse requires a symmetical body to help prevent injury and create an athletic horse. The Hay High technique encourages straightness and strength in the crooked horse, which has been found to greatly improve a horse's balance and self carriage undersaddle. I decided to apply this technique and have been thoroughly impressed with the results in only 2 weeks! The haybag was hung at wither height and filled twice a day with optional grazing available in the paddock 24/7 as well. To my amazement when I gave the pony a small hardfeed at ground level, he choose to stand square in the front for his whole meal!
