06.01.2022 Acquired brain injury is the fastest growing disability for young Australian men. At 17 years old Scotty (as he likes to be called) had been accepted into University to study marine engineering under a scholarship. With such a bright future and a beautiful girlfriend, he thought nothing could stop him. Alcohol, a New Years Eve party and speed changed everything in the blink of an eye. Rather than watching their son head off to University, Scotty’s parents had to sit and li...sten to the doctors tell them ‘he should be dead’, that even if he did survive the coma and wake up, he would forever be a ‘vegetable’. But Scotty was a fighter and for over 25 years, he has been dependant on a wheelchair for mobility and a full time carer to function day to day. Scotty is one of the ‘lucky’ ones, he has retired parents that have dedicated their lives to caring for their son. Others are not so lucky. Without the right support in place, 7,500 Young Australians are stuck in Aged Care Facilities. 42% of Traumatic Brain Injury is caused through Car Accidents and that Alcohol is involved in 50% of Head Injuries. 2 out of 3 of all brain injuries are acquired below the age of 25 and males are far more likely to incur a Brain injury. Traumatic Brain Injury is one of the most frequent causes of death and disability worldwide. We cannot be wishy washy about our speed, alcohol/drug or assault laws if we are to turn the tide of growing injuries and deaths. The cost of brain injury to our community is huge! It is estimated that Traumatic Brain Injury in Australia costs $8.6 billion per year. And that‘s not counting the financial and emotional costs to Carers, Family Members and Friends. We see so many government initiatives especially for young drivers and the latest red card initiative for potential explosive behaviour yet the statistics are growing not reducing. Headway Gold Coast Parkwood held a morning tea to help raise awareness of Traumatic Brain Injury in our community. The message is DON’T TAKE UNNECESSARY RISKS and PROTECT YOUR BRAIN. For more information or support contact Headway Gold Coast Inc.
