22.01.2022 Hello music lovers, it gives me so much joy to bring to you our latest Key Change Moment, this time from the searingly talented, beautiful human that is Rich Davies. A couple of weeks ago I let you know about Rich's latest release - a tribute to his musical hero Bruce Springsteen. Well true to his word, Rich has written a Key Change Moment that rings with truth and dreams - you can feel the heat and dust swirl around you as you read it. Over to you Rich... "I’ve often joked ...Continue reading
21.01.2022 Hello Music Lovers, today's Key Change Moment comes from the extraordinary Dave Walker. Musician, record label owner, former journalist and wonderful human. We've been exceedingly fortunate to host Dave on our Healesville Music Festival stages before. His searing talent on the guitar is undeniable and he's also one of the funniest men I've met. Let Dave take you overseas for a few minutes, to the magical Red Rocks. Music invokes a primeval response in us all - but it takes ...Continue reading
21.01.2022 Hello Music Lovers, hope youre all doing well. Today were kicking off a new thing were calling KEY CHANGE. Lets all share those magical, defining gig, or festival moments that have left a permanent, shining and beautiful imprint on our minds. (If Raf Epsteins Changing Tracks had a love child with the RocKwiz first concert question then it would look a bit like this:)... A huge thank you to the gorgeous - the talented - the awesome human that is Elton Pinkster, who by putting a band pic up on his page, (and then kindly explaining to me in great detail who they were) - has inspired this whole thing. Elton is also a legend volunteer and photographer at our beautiful festival. Over to you Elton... "Ok Nadine, these guys are one of my all time favourite bands, They are The Descendents. When I first heard these guys, I had to sit down just to take it in, then I heard Karl Alvarez on bass. Thats was when I put my bass down and never picked it up again. I figured playing guitar was easier. The tall guy in the front is Bill, Ive met him a few times, my old band even supported them at Festival Hall in Melbourne. Hes like a musical savant. And hes the drummer/song writer / engineer / producer and general driving force of the band. Milo the singer is wearing glasses. He left the band to go to college and hes super smart. But for me, my favourite is Stephen ( the guy with the blonde hair ) He plays guitar. Hes by far the most "user friendly" out of the band. Because of this band, I have made so many friends. Its kinda like a secret society and only we know how lucky we are to know of The Descendents. If you want to have a listen. Try the song "Thank You" from the album Everything Sucks. "thank you for playing the way you play " Theres little accents on the guitar that Stephen does to pay homage to some of his favourite guitarist like Greg Ginn from Black Flag. He told me this when we played with them. Although if you really want to hear why I put down the bass, listen to "Clean Sheets" . The bass lines are insane. Imagine being 17 and hearing this for the first time." Thank you SO SO much for sharing this Elton! If its inspired you, please send your story to [email protected] and lets remind each other of those halcyon days of live music and look forward to when were doing it all again! 1. The Descendents 2. The legend Elton Pinkster #hmf2020 #keychange #livemusic
20.01.2022 Hello Music Lovers, it's no secret that we're huge fans of Rich Davies & The Low Road here at the Healesville MUSIC Festival - some of our most exciting festival moments have involved Rich and his band! The Low Road are a joy to host and for 3 years running it wasn't a closing concert unless Rich was out there in the crowd, singing his heart out and sweating all over his guitar and the adoring crowd. Today Rich is sharing with us his love of the music of the great Bruce Spri...ngsteen. He's re-imagined the songs from the classic 'Born in the USA' album and recorded it all while we've been locked in splendid isolation. Support our beautiful friend Rich if you're able to, and buy the album from Bandcamp (link below) and then let's all cross everything that there is a HUGE gig somewhere in our near future where we can hear it all sung live! #Richdavies #brucespringsteen #healesvillemusicfestival #dearlordimisslivemusic
20.01.2022 A HUGE congratulations to the good folk at Watts River Brewing on 5 years since their first brew! We love these guys and for 3 years they've been our beer of choice at the festival. Ben, Hanna, Aaron and the team go above and beyond to help us each year (and not just with beer!) Can't wait to see you all down at the brewery in 2021 for live music and the best brews poured by the finest people!
20.01.2022 Good Morning Music Lovers! Its July! Which is brilliant because it means were that much closer to booting 2020 out the door... but even more exciting is that TODAY at 5pm the fabulous, wonderful, super fun humans that are the Tuck Shop Ladies will be joining us for a live stream right from this page! ... We loved them so much at the 2019 Healesville MUSIC Festival and well be crossing arms, fingers, legs, toes and eyes that they join us back at our beautiful festival site this November. This concert is free to watch. As always please try and support our artists and buy their merch https://tuckshopladies.bandcamp.com/ There are cds, hats, t-towels, t-shirts and caps being modelled by their pooch. The good folk at Support Act still have a mammoth task helping our artists who have had their income decimated. A donation to them, if you are able to, would be wonderful. Enjoy your Sunday and see you all back here at 5! #hmf2020 #tuckshopladies #wintertastetest #Healesville #musicvictoria

18.01.2022 Hello music lovers, just 4 days till we welcome the searingly talented Tim Woodz and the dirty shoes to the Winter Taste Test stage! (handy hint - come back to this page at 5pm on Sunday;) Its no exaggeration to say that we love Tim here at the Healesville MUSIC Festival. He is a wonderful human, an inspired and hugely funny songwriter and were thrilled that hes agreed to play for us all. ... You might not know that hes also the heart of our beautiful festival - working so hard each year to help us bring you the very best festival we can. Those of you that have joined us the last couple of years know also that its Tim who is the first one in the jam tent, helping us all sing and play a song, no matter our ability. And theres no amount of value that can be placed on the joy that an inclusive and welcoming jam brings to a festival. (Hes usually the last one there too, serenading us all to sleep with a baritone, "daylight come and we wanna go hohooome." :) As always the concert is free to watch but please consider supporting Tim with a bit of merch shopping https://www.timwoodz.com/shop And dont forget our friends at Support Act who are still doing so much to support our decimated music industry. https://supportact.org.au/donate-now/ Check out Tims mulled wine recipe in the event discussion -its a cracker! 15.01.2022 Morning Music Lovers! Today's Key Change comes from the wonderful Catherine who has been part of our festival family for a few years now. We're so grateful for her support and immense event and grant writing experience. I loved this story so much - get thee children to a folk festival! "I'll be forever grateful to my parents for exposing me to so much live music as a child, mostly at folk festivals like our beloved Healesville Music Festival. ... A Key Change moment I had growing up was seeing Miss Honey Alexander perform 'Buzzin' on keyboard. She was touring with her husband Rod Piazza and their band The Mighty Flyers. We'd video taped from Rage their set at the Byron Bay Blues Fest but that didn't compare to seeing it live. It was the Honeybend Creek Rock & Blues Festival in Glenburn, March 1994. There I was, a scrawny 13 year old girl who had wiggled her way to the front row, shoulder to shoulder with bikie and rockabilly types. Miss Honey was pounding those keys and my heart was pounding too. I was mesmerised. It inspired me to take up piano. My parents found a Beale baby grand. It was a hundred years old and it showed in the glass marks and cigarette burns that decorated the timber casing. There in our living room I tinkered away imitating my idol Miss Honey. I had this trick where I would lie on the floor and play the keys over my head. My parents said I should go on Red Faces...which says it all about my musical talent! Sometimes at parties, friends would sing along or jump up and dance on the piano lid. Someone once 'offered' to blow it up with dynamite. I don't play anymore but I love that piano and will never let it go. It remains in the Black Cat Cafe in Nuggetty where it will stay, hopefully to be played by music lovers for years to come. " Thanks so much Catherine for sharing this - have a listen to 'Buzzin' here and hear for yourself why this was a Key Change for a music loving little girl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OjpEX11ITg #hmf2020 #healesville #keychange #findyourself #LiveMusicLives

15.01.2022 Hello Music Lovers - well what a June it was! 14.01.2022 Hello Music Lovers, we have another beautiful Key Change moment for you, this time from the wonderful Catherine Nolan. Cathy has been part of our festival for many years, sometimes as a committee member, always as a supporter and most importantly, leading the band and choir up on the Healesville Music Festival stage on a Sunday morning with the brilliant Soulsville performances! You don't have to be a believer to be swept away by the pure power and joy of the Soulsville cho...ir and band, and now Cathy has shared with us where it all began for her about 50 years ago...over to you Cathy. "My older brother brought home a Joe and Eddie LP record. We didn't have a working record player in the house but there was a rudimentary one in the sleep out. I used to sneak out and play all and any of the record collection out there, Buddy Holly, Simon and Garfunkel, Sergeant Pepper and Stardust to name a few. Joe and Eddie's album was not an attractive looking album to a girl of about 7 or 8 years old but oh how my heart burst when I heard the first song; 'There is a meetin'! I just felt like my chest would explode! There was an instant recognition that this was spiritual music but of a kind I'd never heard before. I loved the build up and the joyfulness! I didn't know it then but the little girl would one day sing gospel in the black churches of Memphis, Chicago and New Orleans and Soulsville was on its way way back then!" Thank you so much Cathy! How lucky we all are that your brother brought that record home and so many years later you'd be working hard bringing the amazing Soulsville to us each year for the festival. Have a listen here to the song that inspired Cathy all those years ago. https://youtu.be/MMoPZd-4Fq8 Its beautiful! #hmf2020 #keychange #healesville #findyourself #joeandeddie

08.01.2022 Hello music lovers, I received a phone call from the good folk at Green Music Australia to let us all know about these concerts theyve got happening, live on Facebook, each Friday. Created by Green Music Australia & School Strike 4 Climate, theyre supporting the anti-fracking campaigns of First Peoples led organisations. These concerts are free to watch and are raising awareness of incredibly important environmental issues, while giving us all some amazing music to enjo...y. Add it to your Friday watch list :) Today is also R U OK day. Its a great reminder that all of us need human contact Every Single Day. It looks a little different for us here in Victoria at the moment. Hugs are off the agenda - but we can still make a call or send a message to someone we love and let them know we cant wait to catch up. #greenmusic #ruokday #healesville #hmf2020
07.01.2022 Hello music lovers, this post is for our beautiful volunteer family. Many of you come back year after year and I know for some of you, these small festivals are part of your retirement joy - A magical, purposeful wandering between our regional towns, supporting our events and joining together again with friends from those areas. I just tried to sing your praises from the ABC Melbourne radio heights but unfortunately they ran out of time to chat but given a chance heres w...hat I would have said. A festival in a small town is so much more than an economic boost - they are a tonic of joy and community spirit that lasts much longer than the event. Firstly its the volunteers coming together for 12 months to organise the event and then its the volunteer family that bring their hard work and huge hearts to make it all work across the festival weekend. I know many of our volunteers by name, I certainly know your faces. I love seeing you in our community and for those from afar, I love seeing your buses and vans pull in to our beautiful camping area each year. When I see you, I breathe easier, my shoulders relax, the smile is there on my face and Im ready for the hug that so many of you always have for me. We may not be able to gather together this year - but Ill be waiting for you when we can. Nadine. Nicole Pinkster photography (another legend volunteer)

04.01.2022 Hello Music Lovers, hope you're all doing well. Today we're kicking off a new thing we're calling KEY CHANGE. Let's all share those magical, defining gig, or festival moments that have left a permanent, shining and beautiful imprint on our minds. (If Raf Epstein's Changing Tracks had a love child with the RocKwiz first concert question then it would look a bit like this:)... That's was when I put my bass down and never picked it up again. I figured playing guitar was easier. The tall guy in the front is Bill, I've met him a few times, my old band even supported them at Festival Hall in Melbourne. He's like a musical savant. And he's the drummer/song writer / engineer / producer and general driving force of the band. Milo the singer is wearing glasses. He left the band to go to college and he's super smart. But for me, my favourite is Stephen ( the guy with the blonde hair ) He plays guitar. He's by far the most "user friendly" out of the band. Because of this band, I have made so many friends. Its kinda like a secret society and only we know how lucky we are to know of The Descendents. If you want to have a listen. Try the song "Thank You" from the album Everything Sucks. "thank you for playing the way you play " There's little accents on the guitar that Stephen does to pay homage to some of his favourite guitarist like Greg Ginn from Black Flag. He told me this when we played with them. Although if you really want to hear why I put down the bass, listen to "Clean Sheets" . The bass lines are insane. Imagine being 17 and hearing this for the first time." Thank you SO SO much for sharing this Elton! If it's inspired you, please send your story to [email protected] and let's remind each other of those halcyon days of live music and look forward to when we're doing it all again! 1. The Descendents 2. The legend Elton Pinkster #hmf2020 #keychange #livemusic
04.01.2022 Hello music lovers, today's Key Change Moment comes from me. Originally I'd written about a magical 1999 Woodford Folk Festival moment when I was falling in love and everything in my world was bright, (you know the feeling!) and I'll tell you about it next time we catch up if you're really interested - but today I'm giving my voice to a couple of wonderful men who I'll call Will and Tim. I have the privilege of knowing Will and Tim because I work in disability support. Bot...h men are 'non-verbal' in the regular vocab sense but they've taught me so much about communication and the power of music to bring joy, comfort and peace. Tim is a beautiful human. His carers have had to advocate for him over the years to receive medical treatment because, 'you know, we've done a brain scan and there's just nothing there.' I'd love for those medical professionals to see Tim when he's smiling ear to ear because someone's taking the time to give him a head massage or a warm bath - but if you really want to see pure joy then you need to play his favourite song, 'Morningtown Ride' by The Seekers. From the first notes, he lifts his head, he smiles and laughs quietly and then tears roll down his face - all with that beautiful smile still beaming. His sister remembers that years ago when Tim was very young, their aunt would visit and play her guitar for him and this was one of the songs she'd sing. I play The Seekers for Tim as often as I can. I never tire of witnessing his joy and it's only thanks to a fellow worker that I learnt about it. Tracy watches for the joy in the people we support, she remembers and she advocates. Sometimes she has to search for the Seekers CD when it's been hidden by other 'carers' who are just 'so sick of hearing it'. You're ace Tracy. Will has his own legend who looks out for him and that's Ryan. Ryan knows how important music is for Will and he puts together compilations of Will's favourite songs, carefully remembering which songs were most loved when a favourite Cold Chisel cd mysteriously disappeared. Will's day is full with music and he knows just what he wants to listen to. I have to watch and listen to him to make sure I get it right. Sometimes we go through 7 or 8 cd's before we've got the one that's right for how he's feeling now - but there's a few that have been favourites for a while. The Rolling Stones, Cold Chisel, Fleetwood Mac and Hanson's MMMBop are all on high rotation. My thanks to Tim and Will for sharing their love of music and how important it is to them, and also to Tracy and Ryan for being the quietly raging voice in the background that makes sure that the music Will and Tim love is always there for them. Maybe in 2021 you'll get to meet Will and Tim at the Healesville Music Festival. I certainly hope so. Our festival is for everyone. 02.01.2022 Hello Music Lovers, It is with heavy hearts that the committee have made the decision to cancel the 2020 Healesville MUSIC Festival. It is the right decision in these times but it doesnt mean that we wont be providing music for you over the festival weekend. ... Weve got plans for a full online programme on Saturday the 28th of November, featuring as many of our Winter Taste Test artists as are able to join us. Ticket holders will be contacted and offered a refund or they are welcome to hold their tickets until our 2021 event. No price increase will be passed on. A few days ago our beautiful friends at Great Aunt released a new track Oh, Wont You Save Me - and it is glorious and uplifting with an incredible animated clip. Its a hand clapping reminder for us all to look out for ourselves and for those around us who might need a hand and it could not be more relevant or powerful. Take care everyone and lets all work together towards live music in safety sooner rather than later. Nadine. #hmf2020 #healesville #greataunt #newmusic #onlinefestival

01.01.2022 Hello Music Lovers, this Key Change Story comes to you from our Festival secretary Emma!
