25.01.2022 Orthoses or others call them orthotics. Lots of opinions. yes opinions are given for the implementation of treatment. for some reason other health professional get their nose bent out of shape when it is prescribed. Custom orthoses are joint specific and not arch supports. Are they expensive? yes. but they last 3-5 years. work that out on a daily rate. Good value I think. and health funds pay for some of it! Calculate how many visits to the practitioner to treat inju...ry or provide rehab. i have patients with bills into the $1000s. Uninformed ideas on supporting the arch are untrue when the basis is to provide stability to the mid tarsal joint and to provide a vessel to reduce the impact load to the tissues, thus reducing the stress to the joint and surrounding tissue. The idea that they weaken the foot is wrong and research has shown that by restoring joint position back to what is perceived as neutral, muscle activity increases and with activity comes strength so one can argue it actually strengthens the foot (Murley et al 2009). So by trying to just prescribe exercise to strengthen the foot is good but in an environment that supports the alignment of the foot and leg so that we obtain muscle balance. Otherwise you are only treating the imbalance and supporting its growth. Orthoses are just like prescribed glasses. we dont feel the need to think we can strengthen our eyes to allow us to stop wearing glasses. why is the foot any different? Look at the athlete bellow. he would have some of the best running mechanics and fastest marathon splits to boot. guess what. he wears orthoses! If you would like any more information please come in and I can assist you with your goals and provide you with the tools to remain injury free See more

22.01.2022 There are 3 major muscles in the glutes that provide stability, locomotion and power when running. glut max extends the hip throughout the propulsive phase whilst glut medius and minimus stabilise the hip and move the leg away from the mid line. The glutes reduce the impact on the knee. functional strengthening of the glutes can be achieved through functional exercises. the idea of creating stability from instability. Single leg taks identify any imbalance and provide us with real time feedback on stability and strength. Shannon is demonstrating the reach to single arm single leg dead lift

21.01.2022 Although the article seems to misinterpret rearfoot striking to striking in front of your centre of pressure, it addresses the average runners quest for the magic of mimicking barefoot running through forefoot running. Weekly we have patients Telling me their running efficiency improves with forefoot striking and rearfoot striking is slower and by forefoot striking they feel that their speed increases as . Not that maybe they are training more so they are becoming more ef...ficient?? All too often I see women in particular who develop a stress response or even fracture due to the increased stress to the forefoot, or Posterior chain injury due to the increased impact load to the calf (gastroc-soleal complex) Focus on where your foot strikes, not how and in time you will increase speed with efficiency, but more importantly You will no doubt avoid injury http://www.running-physio.com/forefoot/

14.01.2022 Juvenile Bunions Although bunions are much more common in adults, Bunions in children are not normal and should be treated as early as possible. The treatment goal is to prevent the bunions from getting larger and to relieve any pain. Bunions result in the big toe drifting towards the 2nd toe and a bony bump forms at the base of the big toe joint. Over time this joint often becomes arthritic, painful and finding shoes to fit becomes increasingly problematic.... How are Juvenile Bunions Treated? Identifying Juvenile bunions early is important. If juvenile bunions are left untreated, they tend to get larger and more painful, making it more likely that surgical intervention will be required. Treatment options vary according to the severity of the bunion. The primary goal of most early treatment options is to relieve pressure on the bunion and slow down or stop the progression of the joint deformity. The following treatment options may be recommended: Foot Orthoses: Foot Orthoses are prescribed by your Podiatrist when the childs foot posture is contributing to the development of the bunion deformity. Footwear: It is important that the child avoid shoes with a narrow, or tapered, toe box. The shoes must have plenty of growing room so there is no pressure on the toes. Bunion Night Splints: A night splint helps to realign the bunion joint and stretch out the soft tissues surrounding the joint by applying a small amount of corrective force overnight. Exercises: Your Podiatrist will provide advice on exercises to improve the mobility of the joint and to strengthen the small foot muscles that support your foot.
14.01.2022 Have you had little niggles in your legs or feet? Dont let injury prevent you from heading out for you weekend run or achieving your running goals! Simply Fit Sports Podiatrist Brendan Sutton has put together some tips on how to keep active, healthy and happy whilst achieving your exercise goals this Season... Top five tips for keeping you running this Season! 1. Footwear Wearing old and worn-out shoes can lead to increased load on the structures in your feet and further up ankles, knees, hips and back. keep your running shoes fresh and up to date your running shoes will generally be durable for 800-1000 km this might seem obvious but only use them for running if in doubt, update! 2. Conditioning It is important for your muscles to adapt to the increased load you place on them. follow a training program that has a gradual increase in load this can allow structures to become strong and conditioned, as you increase your activity. Ask us how if unsure 3. Load variation If you run the same route every day, the same structures will be loaded every time. This can increase your risk of injury. Cross training and functional core stability and lower limb stability and mobility are essential for injury prevention 4. Previous injury assessment One of the biggest risk factors for injury is having had a previous injury. have previous injuries assessed to address the causative factors a dynamic running assessment is a great way to assess and address possible causative factors 5. Soft tissue work As we increase our running and exercise we will need to be doing a little more to take care of ourselves. Use a foam roller to increase mobility and muscles ability to stretch Warm up and cool down, start slow and build to youre goal pace for the session, Warm up and cool down, start slow and build to youre goal pace for the session running hard often increases injury risk Functional warm down essential - see Shannon for hints See us for massage and muscle release to maintain health function of your muscles and to educe tightness and dysfunction and to keep you moving! every 4 weeks is a great way to keep you moving Enjoy your training and if you do continue to have sore feet or legs, call us on 63727773 or contact us online and make a time to have your feet, shoes and running technique assessed!
