19.01.2022 TRANS AWARENESS WEEK November 13th - 20th Trans Awareness Week is about bringing attention to issues of prejudice, discrimination and violence that affect trans and gender diverse people. It is also about celebrating the trans community ... Transgender describes people whose gender identity is different than the identity they were assigned at birth. Non-binary describes people who don’t identify as male or female. These people live as both, either, or no gender. Gender diverse is an umbrella term that encompasses a range of different gender identities. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO SUPPORT DIVERSITY: Call out hurtful, inappropriate or disrespectful language or remarks. Respect pronouns. And if you’re not sure which pronoun someone uses, just ask! Be patient with those questioning their gender identity. Listen with an open mind and heart to the experiences of gender diverse people they’re the experts on their own lives, and one of the most important parts of being an ally is to listen and give others the space to speak. Don’t assume you can tell if someone is transgender. Transgender, non-binary and gender diverse people don’t all look a certain way. Use gender neutral language. Our everyday words and phrases are often gendered unnecessarily. Instead of brother/sister use sibling and instead of boyfriend/girlfriend use partner. Question and unlearn the gender expectations you may have grown up with. You may have been taught to think of binary gender as natural, when in fact, there are lots of different gender identities and ways that people can express them. https://www.minus18.org.au/articles/how-to-be-a-trans-ally If you or someone you know is experiencing significant distress the below organisations are here to help: QLife Australia 1800 184 527 Beyond Blue 1300 224 636 headspace 1800 650 890 Lifeline 13 11 14
