25.01.2022 SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 Update Please folks, hand sanitizer is a less effective method than soap and water. Home-made sanitizer is likely to be a false security, as not all alcohols kill all germs equally, so alcohol content alone is not enough. A bit of hygiene discipline, and maybe not grabbing the escalator rails in shopping malls, running a disinfectant wipe (supplied free at all good supermarkets in Aus) over the shopping trolley, and washing your hands as soon as you've... finished handling money,.. these are things that will keep you safer than almost anything else. Take a warm and lightly soaped washer over your car's interior surfaces to kill any coronaviris particles, including SARS-CoV-2; again, disinfectants are not going to work significantly better than soap. Naturally, common sense still works. Eat a fresh and organic diet, get plenty of water and rest, and don't be around others when ill. Add in decent hygiene and most will stay safe during this event.

23.01.2022 Social Distancing and COVID-19 - What's the goal? Australia has unofficially committed by action and inaction to a course of "controlled exposure" with regards ...to COVID-19. What does this mean? Controlled exposure means controlling the rate at which the virus spreads through the community. Flattening the curve, as it's known now, is about keeping numbers of gravely ill people below the limits of the medical system. Not closing schools is [cynically thought of as] spreading the virus through the two least vulnerable populations we have, children and young parents - expect school closures to become official at the end of this coming week. How does this help anything? Most people will only experience mild symptoms, with some just losing their sense of taste or smell for a few days. By keeping these outbreaks limited to a single household, the chances of the virus mutating is low, and the chances of co-infection with another illness is also substantially lower. The end game here is to quietly allow 40% [or a similar number] of the population to acquire immunity. At this point, herd immunity begins to play a factor and limits the transmission to physical contamination vectors only, lowering the incidence of 'in the wild' transmissions and lowering the new case loads seen in hospitals. With a gradual re-opening of the economy, there will be a second, much less dramatic wave of infections spanning the next year as 80%+ of the population become exposed and immune to this bug. Once this milestone is passed, the impact of the virus in the wild is very much limited, but will still represent a danger to those unexposed elderly with co-morbidity issues. What is life likely to look like in the mid-future? Not looking at the economic factors, which require government leadership to halt to worst effects of, social distancing is likely to become a thing for the next 12-18 months. [I am personally liking the extra consideration and politeness that is permeating my outside experiences.] Expect the lockdown at the end of this week coming, when enough of the virus has been spread to keep a low simmer happening, rather than boiling over. This should last for eight weeks, but will probably be announced early as a three week (with options) lockdown. In the short-term - please work with everyone to follow these rules and stop letting the TV scare you - take this time to actually read a book or be in silence for a while. The measures in place are not a government conspiracy, not big brother, and ARE common sense and entirely consistent with the real effects we are observing around the world. Stay safe!
