25.01.2022 On Friday evening, I attended the retirement do for a wonderful nursing colleague, Professor Mary Chiarella, AM. Mary was an anaesthetic nurse with whom I worked at RPAH in the mid 1970s after she had arrived from UK. Our paths crossed again when we both worked at the then NSW College of Nursing in the 1990s. By this time Mary had a law degree and as I was dabbling in teaching law, she and I would be sent off to run medico-legal seminars in rural NSW. These trips were alway...s a lot of fun, Marys gift for story telling always entertained the participants as well as imparting important info on medico legal issues. Marys name will be familiar to many nurses as she has co authored the text book, Law for Nurses & Midwives with Patricia Staunton - a 9th edition in press. Marys CV is very impressive and I would recommend you read it in full at the link. She has been one of our most influential nurse leaders in recent years and was awarded an AM for her services to the profession in 2019. The recent evening, attended by her two sons, celebrated her achievements and was also the opportunity for me to catch up with other former College colleagues. Wishing her well in retirement, though knowing Marys energy, she will not be putting her feet up! https://sydney.edu.au///academic-staff/mary-chiarella.html

22.01.2022 The coming week promises to be an exciting one for Sally as she heads off to Honiara, Solomon Islands for the South Pacific Nurses Forum. This regional forum brings together evidence, experience and innovations highlighting the critical importance of nursing strategic contribution to Health coverage in the Pacific Region. Sally will be co presenting a paper with Mabel Taoi, Collaboration for Quality Perioperative Nursing Care. The presentation will overview the project which we collaborated with our South Pacific colleagues, led by Mabel from Fiji, to develop an infection prevention bundle, consisting of 6 standards and audit tools. For further information on this project visit our website www.healtheducationaustralia.com.au Good luck Sally and Mabel look forward to seeing the pictures.

21.01.2022 Great to catch up with colleagues Zoe & Julie yesterday at POW. Presented them with a copy of the perioperative nursing textbook of which I am co editor and Zoe & Julie authors of the anaesthetic chapter. The book will be a prize in celebrations of International Nurses Day today. Have a great day with lots of cake, coffee and a glass of bubbles (better wait til you get home for the latter)! Congratulations to all my nursing buddies who continue to provide wonderful care to patients.

21.01.2022 Wishing you all a safe & Happy Easter. We have taken the opportunity over the break to update news on our website, including a blog on the OTA Conference. So whilst you nibble away at those Easter eggs, take a look at our latest blog & news. https://healtheducationaustralia.com.au

20.01.2022 Had a great time doing a live webinar as part of ACORNs education series. We presented on measuring workplace compliance, introducing the audience to the new (soon to be launched) ACORN periop practice audit tools. A really exciting initiative which had its origins in the work we did with our Pacific colleagues. ACORN plan to launch the Asepsis & Clinical Care audit tools at the ACORN & ASIORNA Conference in May. Heres Sally in full flight during the webinar. If you missed it, you can view it via ACORN website. Those of you coming to the Conference can also attend one of the workshops we will be running on using the audit tools in practice. You can also listen to our Pacific colleagues present their experiences of carrying out practice audits.

20.01.2022 photos from a great conference in Alice Springs with the NT Perioperative Nurses Assoc. Sally gave another excellent insight to the lives and WWI exploits of the real ANZAC gals - inspiring us still. As you can see, she really gets into the spirit of the time! Menna gave a presentation on social media and how it can be used within healthcare. There were some interesting presentations highlighting the unique health issues and surgical interventions carried out in NT. Thank you... to Sharon and her team for organising the conference and the entertaining social events that are always a highlight! We managed to get out and about in Alice, including brekky at the Olive Pink Botanical Gardens, complete with resident wallabies and bowerbirds constructing their courtship structure. An all too short a trip, would love a longer stay - magic part of Australia. See more

20.01.2022 Sally & I caught up with fellow textbook editor, Dr Brigid Gillespie at Australian Healthcare Expo in Sydney. Brigid gave an informative presentation on communication & teamwork. Sally facilitated a lively panel discussion with emerging nurse leaders at various stages of their careers. The expo showcases a wide variety of healthcare related products from 3D printing of spare parts to floor coverings to patient care related technology to education modalities- phew!Amazing. Have to remember theres a patient in there somewhere!

20.01.2022 Wonderful Oration by Sally to kick off the Conference. Made us laugh & cry, truly inspirational. Been a terrific first day. We have an early start tomorrow with a charity walk along the river. Then Turia Pitt will inspire us with her amazing story of resilience & courage. Sally & I will run workshops on the new ACORN Practice Audit Tools. Then we can gussy up in our 1920s Gatsby gear & party!!!

19.01.2022 Hope to see some of you for the live webinar next week. If you cant make it, catch up via the ACORN site. This is the third in the series on the Practice Audit Tools and focuses on what to do with the audit results. We will also give you a sneak peak at Bundle 2 due for release soon.

19.01.2022 Just had a meeting with 4 periop colleagues to plan some events for the NSW OTAs 60th birthday in March. We have all worked in periop for many years - all that collective experience. We are all of a certain age and those not yet retired are likely to be doing so in the next couple of years. How do we make sure that all that experience gets passed onto the next generation of periop nurses? Are we doing enough to ensure we have a next generation!? I have tackled these questions in my latest blog, Passing the baton.... Check it out on our website: www.healtheducationaustralia.com.au

18.01.2022 Clearing the Air Sally and I enjoyed catching up with Penny Smalley last week during one of her regular visits to Australia. She was still on a high following an historic win in the baseball World Series for her beloved Chicago Cubs. So plenty of celebrations. Penny, as many of you will know, is a perioperative nurse, consultant and is recognised as an expert in surgical plume and laser safety. She travels the world running workshops on these topics for medical and nursing st...aff and providing them with workplace support. During this visit she carried out audits in a number of Sydney hospitals on the use of surgical plume evacuators. She was disappointed by the results which showed there was poor compliance with the use of plume evacuators. It does beg the question, why, after all the evidence gathered over the past 20 plus years that plume contains noxious gases, chemicals, viruses and aerosolised particles that have the potential to harm us, do we as perioperative nurses continue to put ourselves at risk on a daily basis? Did you know, for example, that 1 gram of tissue vaporised using diathermy produces plume that is the equivalent of smoking 6 cigarettes in 15 minutes? (Tomita et al, 1989). Note the date of this information - 1989! The dangers of plume are not new, they have been known for decades and yet every day you can walk into an operating suite and smell the diathermy plume. wafting down the corridor. So the message about the dangers is not getting through. Why? To read more, please go the Clearing the Air tab on our website www.healtheducationaustralia.com.au We have included some excellent resources for you to access.

15.01.2022 Wow, what a busy month we have had! We held a three day workshop in Lautoka, Fiji where our operating theatre nursing colleagues from the 14 Pacific Island countries gathered. We have been working with them over the past 18 months as they implement new infection prevention standards and audit their practices. They have faced many challenges in changing practice, but many have succeeded spectacularly. It was great to hear of their triumphs and also from those who continue to f...ace challenges in their operating theatres. Hopefully we have assisted the latter with strategies to succeed. Their enthusiasm and commitment is inspiring and we left feeling exhilarated by the experience. As the workshop coincided with the Melbourne Cup, we introduced the group to sweeps and some rustled up some pretty exotic hats decorated with local flora! We hope to see some of the group at the national Australian College of PeriOperative Nursing conference in Adelaide in May next year. Congratulations to everyone! See more

14.01.2022 Well its been a busy few weeks for us! Many of you have followed our travels to Micronesia on my personal FB page. For those who want a bit more detail of the workshop we conducted, I have posted a report on our website - www.healtheducationaustralia.com.au. We had hardly unpacked our bags before Sally headed off to the Australian College of Nursing Conference in Hobart (a slight change of temperature too)! There she presented a poster on the mentoring program she has been b...usy facilitating in the Pacific. By an incredible fluke in the next poster booth was Dr Wendy Smyth, a nurse researcher at Townsville Hospital. Wendy & I met at Westmead Hospital back in 1980 when we were brand new nurse educators. We lost touch when we both left Westmead until I recognised the name on the conference program and Sally tracked her down! Looking forward to reconnecting with Wendy. Hobart wasnt the end of Sallys travels. Next stop Canberra and the ACORN Leadership Summit where Sally was MC and also facilitated a session with Dr Jed Duff, Ruth Melville and Phyllis Davis, a powerful line up of eminent perioperative nurses. Sally will have earned a rest I think! See more

13.01.2022 only a couple of weeks to go before the NSW OTA Annual Conference (3rd & 4th March) and a celebration of its 60th birthday. Quite a milestone for this professional association. A change of venue this year, moving from Rosehill Racecourse function centre to the Masonic Centre in the CBD. Should be a great event - an opportunity for education, catching up with colleagues and viewing the latest in medical technology. If you havent registered yet, head to www.ota.org.au. See you there.

13.01.2022 Happy Perioperative Nurses Week to all our colleagues making a difference to surgical patients who put their lives in your hands everyday. Last week we had the opportunity to meet the perioperative nurses of the future at Uni Notre Dame, Sydney. Together with our colleagues Angela Zupan and Marrianne McGhee we were invited by the Nurses Society to talk to undergraduate nursing students about our experiences as perioperative nurses and what is so good about working in the spec...ialty. We did a mock set up and the students enthusiastically got their hands on instruments and equipment. It was great fun and hopefully we have inspired the students to seek opportunities to experience perioperative nursing during their training. Notre Dame run an elective in the specialty and it is one of the most popular subjects. Check out this great video made by Sydney LHD promoting perioperative nursing. Have a great week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKqO1jCluXM See more

12.01.2022 Its official! Sally has been announced as the next Judith Cornell Orator for the ACORN/ASIORNA Conference In Adelaide in May. A great honour, which Dr Lois Hamlin and myself have also experienced. We are thrilled for Sally and we know shell do a great job and inspire us with her presentation.

12.01.2022 Further to my post on remembering colleagues who have departed this world too soon, today I am remembering another Kirsty Boden. Whilst the careers of Narelle and Lynne blossomed and saw them become leaders in perioperative nursing, Kirstys life was tragically cut short before she had the opportunity to fulfil her potential and become what I feel sure would have been a long and distinguished career in perioperative nursing. Kirsty was killed during the London Bridge terror...ist attack in 2017 whilst providing assistance to the injured she ran, from where shed been enjoying a night out, towards the danger when everyone else was understandably running the other way. The shock we all felt as the news of the attack reached our tv screens was amplified when one of the pictures shown was that of Kirsty. I instantly recognised her as one of the new grads who had undertaken her perioperative program at Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney in 2011 in which I had been involved in running. She arrived a bright, bubbly new grad, always had a smile on her face, though rather shy. It soon became clear she was going to be a natural, a duck to water in the often challenging world of perioperative nursing. Following her new grad program, Kirsty settled into the recovery room and became a knowledgeable, caring and well respected member of the team. She then packed her bags and headed overseas (like many of us had done before her) and ended up working at Guys Hospital, close to where tragedy struck on London Bridge. Recently we have heard the often graphic details of how Kirsty died as the enquiry into the attack takes place in London and the lump in my throat grows each time I hear or read the media reports. Today we heard that Kirsty has most deservedly received from the Red Cross, the Florence Nightingale Medal, considered the highest international bravery award a nurse can receive. This is to add to the Queens Commendation for Bravery Award she had already received in 2018. Sadness is mixed with pride and admiration. RIP Kirsty, the Angel of London Bridge. See more

11.01.2022 Just doing a bit of catch. Late last month Sally & I attended the Australian College of Nursing National Conference. Here we are with Kylie Ward, Executive Director of the College. The poster shows off the project in which we were involved with our South Pacific periop colleagues - the development of infection prevention standards and audit tools. Sally did the lions share of the poster production & did a fantastic job (I just turned up for the photo opp!!) We didnt win a prize, but it created a lot of interest & impressed the boss!!

11.01.2022 Sally has returned from the South Pacific Nurses Forum in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Over 300 delegates met over five days to discuss a number of issues, both local and those related to the South Pacific region. Staffing, regulatory issues, audits of practice, traditional medicines, education and innovative practices were all discussed. There was plenty of time for networking and socialising. Sally was also able to catch up with some of our perioperative colleagues with whom we had developed the infection prevention bundle. She carried out some audits of practice with local staff in the operating theatres at the National Referral Hospital. A very satisfying week!

11.01.2022 Our Perioperative textbooks have found good homes on International Nurses Day. At Prince of Wales, Abie Costillas, a 2nd yr new grad receives her book from Julie Walters & Wendy Chen, working in anaes & recovery at Sydney Hosp is presented with her book by Sally. Congrats to both!

09.01.2022 Sally and I wanted to share some news with you regarding our business, Health Education & Learning Partnerships, which we founded in 2013. We have decided to simplify our business structure and will cease trading as a company at the end of December 2019. We will each continue to explore the professional opportunities that exist for us as individual education consultants in the healthcare sector and, together, we will continue to partner and collaborate on relevant projects.... This simplified business structure will make us more flexible and able to contribute to the increasing diversity of projects that come our way. Whilst running the company has been a steep learning curve for us, its also been an incredibly rewarding experience professionally. We have grown our knowledge and professional expertise along with way and developed our business acumen by running our own company. We have also worked with some wonderful people and formed business and professional relationships, which we value greatly. Over the past 6 years we have undertaken some exciting projects, both in Australia and in the Pacific. Some project highlights include working with: statutory bodies and govt depts eg NMC, NaMO; Professional associations eg ACORN, GENCA; Tertiary sector: ACN, UTS; Medical industry eg Stryker South Pacific, 3M, Smith & Nephew. One of our most rewarding projects has been to collaborate with our Pacific Islands perioperative nursing colleagues in the development and implementation of their own standards and audit tools. We have been thrilled to see them grow professionally, culminating in the formation of the Pacific Island Operating Room Nurses Association (PIORNA). More exciting news on this in subsequent posts. Wrapping up the company takes a bit of time, but our business website and emails will cease from December and we will revert to our using our personal contact details. 08.01.2022 here are some photos from our visit to Suva in September where we facilitated a workshop for periop nurses from 14 Pacific countries. The aim of the workshop was to work with our colleagues on strategies to implement the infection prevention standards in the PPPB.

07.01.2022 Had a great NSW OTA Conference celebrating its 60th birthday. Thrilled that our first President, Pat Solomon was able to join us and gave the most inspiring presentation reflecting on her career and how the Association was founded. She made the point that despite the changes in healthcare over the 60 years, our focus remains the same - doing our very best for each of our patients.. Good to catch up with friends and colleagues. On a personal note, I was thrilled to receive Life Membership of the Association. A huge surprise and an honour. NSW OTA has been a big part of my professional life, I have met some wonderful, inspiring people and been fortunate to witness and on occasions contribute to some of the most significant events in perioperative nursing over the years. Its been a privilege.

06.01.2022 Colleagues remembered Always hard when friends and colleagues depart this world far too soon, but comforting to know that memories remain. Sharing memories was foremost in the minds of those of us who gathered today at the Society for the Preservation of Artefacts of Surgical & Medicine (SPASM) lunch to celebrate the life of Narelle Hines who passed away in April at the age of 71. Narelle was one of our leading perioperative nurses, spending the majority of her career as a ma...Continue reading

06.01.2022 Australasian perioperative nursing textbook third edition announced! Publisher Elsevier have recently announced a third edition of the Australasian textbook, Perioperative Nursing: An Introduction scheduled for publication in May 2020 to coincide with the ACORN Conference in Sydney. In addition, ACORN has confirmed that they would like to continue the endorsement agreement for the third edition. Sally Sutherland-Fraser and Menna Davies return to the editorial team, with ori...ginal editors Lois Hamlin and Marilyn Richardson-Tench retiring from their editorial roles. Both Lois and Marilyn have made substantial contributions to the success of the first two editions and are big shoes to fill. Joining the editorial team are Professor Brigid Gillespie and Ben Lockwood who were contributors to the second edition of the textbook. Both have a mix of academic and clinical expertise and will make a great contribution to this and future editions of the textbook. Whilst a number of past authors will return for the third edition, there are several who are not returning and their contribution to previous editions is acknowledged. The composition of the teams responsible for each chapter is always given a great deal of thought. This means finding authors with the required specialty content knowledge, while ensuring diversity with a mix of authors contributing from across Australia and New Zealand. The third edition will be a revision and update of existing content, to ensure the textbook remains a contemporary, practical and engaging publication for perioperative nurses across Australasia. Look out for some new features, including full colour photos and case scenarios, which will build and unfold as patient journeys throughout the textbook.

06.01.2022 Well it was a memorable ACORN/ASIORNA Conference in Adelaide. We were of course looking forward to hearing Sally deliver the Judith Cornell Oration and not one of the packed audience was disappointed. Sally had us reaching for our tissues as she gave a moving and inspirational oration, entitled, Who do you think you are? Answering this with a simple, Im a nurse, she went on to describe her early life, her path through nursing training, how she became a perioperative nurse and some of experiences that shaped her future career as an educator and consultant. Her oration has been published in the ACORN Journal of Perioperative Nursing (Winter edition, Vol 31, No 2) and I would highly recommend you read it in full. To read the full report from the Conference, visit Latest News & Events at our website www.healtheducationaustralia.com.au

05.01.2022 Seems a very appropriate picture to accompany our best wishes for Christmas and the new year. Thank you everyone who has supported us this year, attended seminars and contributed to a successful year. We hope that those of you keeping our hospitals ticking over this Christmas period will have the opportunity to spend time with family and friends In between shifts. We look forward to seeing you at our 2017 events.

03.01.2022 In celebrating Perioperative Nurse Week and the fantastic work all perioperative nurses do, I wanted to highlight the work of our colleagues in the Pacific. Whilst I was piling on layers of warm clothes during my trip to Canada, Sally was coping with the heat and humidity of the Pacific! As part of our ongoing work with our Pacific perioperative nursing colleagues, Sally was undertaking visits to Tonga and Solomon Islands. Our project in the Pacific has involved collaboratin...g with our local colleagues to develop perioperative nursing standards and workplace audit tools. Sallys visits were aimed at supporting our local champions in carrying out audits and mentoring them to develop these skills in their staff. The staff carried out audits, interpreted the results and discussed how they would managing any changes in practice highlighted by the audit results. It was a very positive experience and the enthusiasm of the nurses a real highlight. We are about to complete the development of a second bundle of perioperative standards and audit tools with Sally travelling to Lautoka, Fiji in a couple of weeks to facilitate a workshop attended by a perioperative nurses from around the Pacific island countries, at which the draft standards will be finalised. Prior to that two of the Pacific team Nerrie from Solomon Is and Heaven from Samoa will present a paper on the project at the South Pacific Nurses Forum in Cook Islands. This is a very prestigious conference, attended by clinicians, academics and educators from around the Pacific. So it is great opportunity to showcase the work of the perioperative nurses in the Pacific. Good luck girls! The attached photos are from Sallys travels! Love the cake! Happy Perioperative Nurses Week hope all those surgeons and anaesthetists are shouting you a coffee or two this week!!

01.01.2022 Pacific perioperative nurses make an impact at ICN Congress, Singapore Last month the Pacific were well represented by perioperative nurses at the International Council of Nursing Congress (ICN) in Singapore. Natasha and Matilda from Samoa presented a paper and a poster at the event (Sally & I even made an appearance on one of the slides!). They were ably supported by Mabel Taoi and other colleagues from Fiji and also Ruth Melville, the ACORNs Ambassador to the Asia Pacific.... The presence of the Pacific perioperative nurses at the prestigious ICN Congress where over 5000 nurses from all over the world were gathered, is another step on a wonderful journey they have all be travelling in the past 3 years or so. So much has been achieved from the development of the Pacific Perioperative Practice Standards and Audit tools to the formation of their own professional association, Pacific Island Operating Room Nurses Association (PIORNA). Next year the inaugural PIORNA Conference will take place (stay tuned for details), which promises to be a great event. In addition, a number of Pacific perioperative nurses have been working as mentors, including Nerrie Raddie from Solomon Islands who visited Labasa, Fiji to mentor perioperative nurses in the use of the Standards and Audit tools. Next week Sally and I set out on a trip to the Federated States of Micronesia and the island of Pohnpei to facilitate a workshop to assist the perioperative nurses in the northern Pacific implement the Standards and Audit tools. We will be joined by Heaven (Samoa) and Sarah (Fiji) to assist with the workshop, a great opportunity for both to hone their mentoring skills. Both have roles as mentors in the Pacific working with their perioperative nursing colleagues to assist with implementing the Standards and supporting the nurses whilst practice audits are being carried out. Sally has been instrumental in facilitating the mentoring program, having carried out some Pacific island hopping last year to mentor individual perioperative nurses. We are grateful to Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) for their support in making the trip to Pohnpei possible and to Mabel Taoi from Pacific Community for her work in organising the participants to attend the workshop. We look forward to trip and meeting our perioperative nursing colleagues. Stay tuned for further news and photos. It will be nice to leave the Sydney winter chills behind for tropical sunshine.
