20.01.2022 Practicing psychologists help a wide variety of people and can treat many kinds of problems. Some people may talk to a psychologist because they have felt depressed, angry, or anxious for a long time. Or, they want help for a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health. Others may have short-term problems they want help navigating, such as feeling overwhelmed by a new job or grieving the death of a family member. Psychologists can help people lea...rn to cope with stressful situations, overcome addictions, manage their chronic illnesses, and tests and assessments that can help diagnose a condition or tell more about the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves. These tests may evaluate intellectual skills, cognitive strengths and weaknesses, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning. #psychologyweek

14.01.2022 Today is the first day of summer, and a good reminder that Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Each year almost 2000 Australians die from this almost entirely preventable disease. You can follow the Cancer Council's five recommendations to help prevent skin cancer. Slip on some sun-protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible.... Slop on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30 (or higher) sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun. Slap on a hat broad brim or legionnaire style to protect your face, head, neck and ears. Seek shade. Slide on some sunglasses make sure they meet Australian Standards.

06.01.2022 As we enter the Christmas and New year period your health and wellbeing may be something that you are thinking about. Whether it is a New Year's resolution or a change that you are making as you transition back into the office we have some tips that might help you prioritise your wellbeing and set up good habits for the New Year. 1. Consider the way you are travelling- walking or riding to your destination instead of driving can be an easy way to incorporate exercise into you...r day without having to set to much additional time aside. This is especially handy during the Christmas period when it is difficult to get a park. Incorporating alternative transport options can quickly become a habit and an easy way to get extra exercise in. 2. Start a wellness challenge- encourage your friends, family or colleagues to join you for extra motivation. A wellness challenge can be anything that improves your wellbeing from getting enough sleep to a fitness challenge. Make sure that you have a goal that you are working towards and don't forget to reward yourself when you reach it. 3. Plan your meals- if you know what you are cooking and eating for the week and have all the ingredients you are less likely to reach for something unhealthy. Meal prepping is also a good way to learn more about the food that you are eating and portion sizes. The plus side is that people who pre-plan are likely to save time and money and reduce the amount of food they waste. 4. Visit your GP- A regular health check can help identify early signs of illness or disease making it much easier to treat. If it's been a while since you've visited your GP use the changing of years as a reminder to book an appointment.

05.01.2022 Wishing everyone a fun-filled Easter with your family and friends

01.01.2022 In 2018 the APS collaborated with Swinburne University on a study of loneliness in Australia. Loneliness is an increasing public health concern, associated with mental and physical ill health. Psychologists are experts in helping people improve their social skills, build stronger connections, and enhance their relationships. The research shone a light on the wellbeing of Australians and their experience of social isolation. Social relationships support good mental and physica...l health, below are 3 tips to help you connect. 1. Think positive- Don't overthink your interaction and try to shift your focus to the topic of conversation of the other person. 2. Don't compare- everyone is different and don't be concerned if others appear to have more or better friends than you, savour the moments of connection. 3. Manage stress- Everybody has some social situations they dread. Practice simple stress management techniques, such as breathing deeply and slowly, to help keep your stress in check through awkward moments. #psychologyweek #healthe
