17.01.2022 BENCH PRESS TIPS WITH @darrynpt This is a great compound exercise that focuses on the chest and triceps. You don't always need a bar and plates to perform a bench press. You can get creative with any weighted object and a floor. Make sure you do this effectively and SAFELY.... Always use a spotter if you need. Step 1: Lay on the bench with your back flat on the bench and feet flat on the ground. Step 2: Grab the bar slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Use the knurls (rough rings on the bar) as a guide of where to grip. Step 3: Press the bar up above your chest, maintaining straight but soft elbows. Step 4: Lower the bar slowly until it reaches about 10cm off your chest or your elbows reach approximately90degrees. Step 5: Press up above your chest, again. Repeat for desired reps. The benefits will increase your chest strength and assist with building arm strength at the same time. To build up to this, start with push-ups until you feel comfortable to move to a bar. You may also want to start with DBs and perform a floor press to practice the technique. The floor is a great way to learn the movement as it will safely protect your shoulders from over-extending in the range of motion. Progressions include wider or narrower grips. The narrower the grip, the more activation of your triceps. Also, different angles (decline or incline) of the bench will target different insertion points of the pec muscle, by activating the upper pec or the lower pec more than a flat bench.
