24.01.2022 HIK providing COVID support to refugee families. The VIC team were privileged to visit and further their understanding of the challenges affecting VICSEGs service users. Waan (VICSEG Refugee Family Mentor) facilitated the provision of essential items (nappies, winter clothes, groceries and nutritional supplements) organised by our volunteers, and helped us to understand the cultural and social pressures affecting the wellness of these families. We shared details of relevant local services with the families, to optimise their support network and will continue to review their progress. We are grateful for todays experience which raised pertinent questions about developing tools to address the system gaps affecting these families #vicsegnewfutures

15.01.2022 Hi All On Thursday night I was part of a panel at a information session organized by Medical students held at the UWA affiliated FJ Clarke Lecture Theatre located at the SCGH Campus (where I attended lectures as a student). We viewed a movie, Against Our Oaths. It was inspiring to see future budding Drs keen to be informed about the discrepancies in health care amongst various communities and countries. The movie was predominantly about the plight of asylum seekers coming ...by boat and the experiences theyve had to endure at off shore detention centers-Manus/ Nauru. It highlighted the hopelessness, helplessness & desperation felt not only by the detainees but the health professionals/ Drs trying to manage their health needs with political agendas at play. The health professionals employed at the detention centres often have to sacrifice the needs of an individual and forsake their hypocratic oath that underlies the fabric/values of our medical profession - Do No Harm. If they raise too many concerns or go against the powers that be, their contracts are often terminated to silence them. From this session 4 people have already volunteered 1 Dr and 3 medical students whom I met at the session. Apart from myself, 2 Senior Case Officers from CARAD/RED CROSS and Dr Sarah Cherian, clinical lead at PCH ( Perth Childrens Hospital) Refugee Medicine were invited to be part of a panel who took questions from the students at the completion of the movie. The passion and energy of these budding Drs was amazing to witness. They are globally aware and Perth HIK will be making connections and expanding our journey with love and compassion through the HIK platform. Dr Hemah- Perth Health In Kind medical lead

12.01.2022 Taking care of your eyes can be a priority just like eating healthy and physical activity. Healthy vision can help keep you safe each day. Some eye conditions can cause vision loss and even blindness. These include Cataracts, a clouding of the eye.... Diabetic retinopathy, which causes damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye. Glaucoma, damage to the optic nerve, often with increased eye pressure. Age-related macular degeneration, which gradually affects central vision. Nine ways you can help protect your vision Get regular comprehensive dilated eye exams. Know your familys eye health history. Its important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease or condition, since some are hereditary. Eat right to protect your sight: In particular, eat plenty of dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens, and fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, albacore tuna, trout, and halibut. Maintain a healthy weight. Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home, such as painting, yard work, and home repairs. Quit smoking or never start. Wear sunglasses that block 99 percent-100 percent of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. Wash your hands before taking out your contacts and cleanse your contact lenses properly to avoid infection. Practice workplace eye safety.
