24.01.2022 Today is Daffodil Day. Every 4 minutes another Australian is diagnosed with cancer. For most cancer types, finding it early means treatment has a better chance of success. Some cancerssuch as breast, cervix and bowelhave screening programs to find cancer early but others do not. For most cancers, it is important to be aware of what is normal for you and to see your doctor if you notice any unusual changes or have any concerns.... You can help detect cancer early by understanding what is normal for your body and reporting any changes to a GP and participating in national screening programs. If you would like more information, contact us @ HSMC on: 8251 3885 https://www.cancersa.org.au/prevention/finding-cancer-early/

22.01.2022 Mon 12th July to Friday 17th July is National Diabetes Awareness Week. Pre-diabetes is when your blood glucose level is higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Two million Australians are believed to have pre-diabetes.... Left untreated they may develop type 2 diabetes in 5 to 10 years. Pre-diabetes is caused by insulin resistance, when the body’s insulin is not working effectively. Pre-diabetes increases the incidence of cardiovascular disease, which can lead to heart attack and stroke. Pre-diabetes is also known as Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) and Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG). Pre-diabetes progressing to type 2 diabetes can be prevented by regular exercise and healthy eating. Click on the link below to take a short test if you think you may be at risk: https://www.diabetessa.com.au//Take_the/Web/AusDRisk.aspx Ph: 8251 3885 to make an appt with one of our GP's to discuss any concerns. We have a resident Diabetes Educator - Terri Yull who is also available for an appointment (with GP referral).

22.01.2022 OCTOBER -ROCTOBER! - October is Mental Health Awareness month, and it's fitting that this is also when daylight saving kicks in! Our clocks are wound forward an hour, so that we get up earlier, come home from work/school earlier, and enjoy more of our Spring/Summer sunshine! Sunlight and Serotonin... While too much of the sun’s warm rays can be harmful to your skin, the right balance can have lots of mood lifting benefits. Sunlight and darkness trigger the release of hormones in your brain. Exposure to sunlight is thought to increase the brain’s release of a hormone called serotonin. This is associated with boosting mood and helping a person feel calm and focused. At night, darker lighting cues trigger the brain to make another hormone called melatonin. This hormone is responsible for helping a person feel sleepy and go to sleep. Without enough sunlight exposure, a person’s serotonin levels can dip low. Low levels of serotonin are associated with a higher risk of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). SAD is a form of depression that is triggered by changing seasons. Get out there and enjoy!!

22.01.2022 Having trouble getting an appointment with your preferred GP? We understand that we are not always able to provide you with an appointment on the day for your favourite doctor, but no need to worry! We have multiple doctors available every day, so please consider booking with one of these doctors for your urgent appointment, and then planning to schedule an appointment with your preferred doctor at a later date.... Your continuity of care is of high priority to us, so offering you care as a team arrangement is a great option. Booking ahead online or over the phone is always an option too. Bookings can be made through HotDocs, Health Engine or by phoning our reception staff on: 8251 3885. Thankyou for your patience!

20.01.2022 September is Dementia Awareness Month Dementia is a general term used to describe a mental illness that significantly impacts an individual's memory, communication abilities and reasoning skills. Symptoms of dementia often include episodes of forgetfulness, an inability to remember new information and losing track of time. As dementia progresses, these symptoms tend to worsen. In the most advanced stages of dementia, sufferers are often unable to care for themselves. Alzheime...r's disease is the most common cause of dementia. It is a degenerative brain disease with symptoms that gradually worsen over time. Damage to brain cells associated with learning and communication can impact the thinking, behaviour and feelings of people with Alzheimer's. The exact cause and cure is unknown. Dementia does not discriminate by age, and there are several different forms. Did you know that this disease affected Ronald Regan (former US president), and even Robin Williams (comedian & actor) had Lewy body dementia. If you are worried about someone close to you, and would like advice or an appt, please contact us on: 8251 3885 or book online for a discussion with one of our GP's.
