25.01.2022 HOW TO SURVIVE THE FESTIVE SEASON: HANGOVERS Follow the tips from Health Space Naturopath Pamela Nelson. The festive season is a time of celebrations and social (distant) gatherings. These happy events are sometimes followed by the less than enjoyable experience of the dreaded hangover. Hangovers can result from drinking too much alcohol.... These symptoms are caused by a number of factors: Dehydration, as alcohol is a diuretic and causes us to go to the bathroom a lot. The chemical acetaldehyde is a substance that is released as alcohol is metabolised in the body, and it can also affect the nervous system. Alcohol causes some lowering of blood sugar because it interferes with the generation of glucose by the liver. Low blood sugar can be associated with tiredness, crankiness, and dizziness. High levels of congeners. Congeners are chemical compounds other than alcohol and water which are found in alcoholic beverages. They help to give colour, flavour and smell. Drinking too much, no matter whether it is expensive wine or beer will increase the likelihood of a hangover. Combining sweet carbonated mixers with alcohol tends to result in a higher rate of consumption, as they just taste like a harmless fizzy drink. So what can you do? Eat before you go out, preferably a meal containing some protein and good fats, as this slows the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream. Have a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage. This combats dehydration caused by alcohol and also often results in less overall consumption. Drink a few glasses of water when you get home too, but ensure electrolyte balance by having some Hydrolyte, Gatorade, or similar. Avoid overconsumption of mixed drinks. Be mindful of how much alcohol is in the mix. Choose vodka or gin over brandy or whiskey in a mixed drink (lower levels of congeners). Have a good meal or snack to settle the stomach and also replenish blood sugar after you get home or at breakfast the next morning. A hearty breakfast may help. Both the eggs and the bacon contain cysteine, which is thought to help recovery. Salt in the bacon replenishes the essential electrolyte sodium. Drink herbal teas such as ginger tea, or peppermint tea which have been used traditionally as hangover treatments. Ginger is a natural painkiller and antioxidant and has been shown to reduce nausea and gastrointestinal distress in clinical studies. Peppermint tea is traditionally used to reduce nausea and gastrointestinal distress. The herbal medicine St Mary’s Thistle (Milk thistle) is an antioxidant and is known as a liver protective and restorative and can be taken daily if you are drinking alcohol regularly. Large doses of B and C vitamins combined with magnesium and zinc in fizzy supplements such as Berocca have been used anecdotally with success. The best practice is prevention, so simply take care and be mindful of your alcohol consumption.

24.01.2022 Health Space Chiropractor and Kinesiologist Emma Cormack shares her tips for regulating blood sugar. Metabolic dysfunction simply refers to blood sugar dysfunction, glucose levels and insulin resistance. You may associate these terms with diabetes. However current investigations are looking at the role of blood sugar for not just pre-diabetic people, but for people with seemingly good health. 22.01.2022 NUTRITIONIST'S TIPS FOR THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS Christmas holidays usually mean parties, celebrations, big lunches and dinners. Even the most diet-conscious can overindulge and binge, especially during holidays and celebrations. What to do the next day? Panic and take expensive detox products? ABSOLUTELY NOT!... Here are some tips from Nutritionist Federica on what to do after a big day of indulging: Don’t skip meals and especially don’t avoid breakfast (if you’re used to it). Skipping meals is in fact counterproductive because it can lead you to be more hungry at subsequent meals. Resume your usual diet, prioritize fruit and vegetables and do not forget about proteins at every meal, which will increase the sense of satiety and keep your metabolism active. It is also a good idea to stick to light cooking like steaming, roasting or grilling. If you have had a few glasses of wine or too many cocktails, don’t forget to drink a lot of water the next day, at least 2 and a half litres. If you struggle to drink a lot of water you can also consume fresh vegetables such as (carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes, peppers, fennel) that have a high water content, or chilled herbal teas. A common effect of binge eating and little movement is a lazy bowel. What is the best way to wake it up? Eat fibre-rich foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables and engage in light physical activity. YES to herbal teas. My favourite herbs to aid digestion and reduce bloating are peppermint, ginger, chamomile, dandelion, cinnamon and rosemary. Choose your favourite combination.

22.01.2022 Strengthen your digestive system this Christmas with the tips of our acupuncturist Clare We usually aim not to overindulge at this time of year, but it can be hard not to give in to temptation! In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the main organ dealing with digestion is the spleen, whose principal job is to process food and transform it into energy.... When we overwhelm the spleen with too much food or too much of the "wrong kind" of food we damage its ability to process food well. This incomplete processing results in a condition known as ‘dampness’ in TCM. The body becomes bogged down and stagnant with residue which can then stagnate and become hot, causing pain and distention. Clare's tips is to eat warm, cooked food, not fried, sugar laden or iced. The reason for this is that in order to assimilate food, the body has to first warm it to body temperature. If the qi/energy in the GI (gastro-intestinal) organs is weak, this process requires extra work that further weakens it. Properly cooked food is already partially broken down, making it easier to digest. Another source of unpleasant GI symptoms can come from the stomach, wherein the qi/energy here which when healthy, moves downwards, but when overloaded rebels and moves upwards. This then results in burping or vomiting. So, as we know it can be hard to resist those extra treats during the festive season. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs in pill or capsule form can prevent digestive discomfort from ruining your fun. Plus there are no side effects, which there may be from frequent ingestion of over the counter anti acid medications. Give Clare a call to discuss making an appointment to get your digestive system strong for the holidays. Call 9389 0890 to book your appointment with Clare!
