Val has been working at Healthways for 11 years teaching swimming and working in customer service, and last week she was named as a Victorian Industry Award Finalist. She says "my dream ever since my teenage years was to be a Physical Education teacher specialising in swimming." She says "I still remember the feeling after leaving my interview, that feeling of excitement and hope of finally being able to follow my dreams. When I’m in the pool, teaching, I forget about everything else! I love the water and the people I work with! 20.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS Jeff! Nominated for 'Victorian Group Exercise Instructor of the Year 2020'! The Victorian Fitness Industry Awards were announced a few weeks ago. Congratulations to our very own Jeff Parker, nominated for 'Victorian Group Exercise Instructor of the Year 2020'! Jeff instructs classes on Mondays/ Wednesdays/ Thursdays/ Fridays. He is an energetic, passionate, knowledgeable, fun instructor (who is known to throw a dad joke in here and there!). ... He has embraced all the challenges that this year has thrown at him and pivoted seamlessly from face-to-face classes to live-stream classes and now to outdoor-personal-training with enthusiasm and hard work. He has extensive experience across a broad range of leadership roles and loves working with people to help them 'be their best'. As well as instructing clients, he is also currently mentoring fitness students with completing their Personal Training qualifications. Jeff actually started his journey at Healthways as a client, before becoming part of staff. We love having Jeff as part of the team, thank him for everything that he does, and wish him the best of luck with his Victorian nomination! 16.01.2022 Congratulations Alex de Minaur who recently reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final at the US Open 2020. He is now Australian's No. 1 Male Tennis player. What does he do for training? He plays soccer tennis as a warm up before his daily tennis skills regime, swims in the pool, runs and sprints on th beach, hits the gym, and sprints up a hill. Before he hits the tennis court he'll do a pyramid running session consisting of 500m 30 seconds rest, 1km 30 seconds rest, 2km 30 seconds rest, 1km 30 seconds rest and 500m 30 seconds rest. 16.01.2022 Safety week starts tomorrow! Which means starting on the 27th of March until the 1st of April for your lesson you’ll need to wear your clothes over your bathers to practice your water rescue skills. Here at Healthways we know that swimming doesn’t necessarily revolve around/in the pool where water can be controlled. Safety week is an excellent opportunity for Children to experience a taste of external water environments. Water Safety week not only helps develop safety skill...s but improves children’s knowledge of how to survive in the water if they fall into a pool, off a boat, into a river, dam, lake or any body of water. We aim to help to prepare your children for swimming in different locations where it may be less predictable. There is always something new to learn especially when it comes to understanding the many diverse and important skills of survival. See you then, Healthways family
14.01.2022 BACK FLOAT An important part of learning to swim involves your child being comfortable on their back with water surrounding them. You can help them get used to this sensation by starting with just a small amount of water in the bathtub and laying your child on their back. As your child gets more comfortable, raise the level of the bathtub water gradually for your child to lay on their back with the water covering their ears, and their face above the water line. Depending on the level of water your child may feel the floating sensation. This skill should be practiced slowly and progressively, and often takes time and patience before your child will feel comfortable. Take your time and don’t be discouraged if your child isn’t comfortable with this at first!

Join in tonight for a live-stream class that focuses on keeping up your strength from home.... Keeping up your muscle mass is so important for your health, for all ages! It's a real challenge keeping your weights routine at home interesting and challenging, particularly when you're by yourself with limited equipment. 'Strength, Core & Stretch' is a low impact class for those that have weights at home and looking to maintain or build all over body strength. It will focus on the key muscle groups that are being targeted as well as correct technique to ensure we are maximising our workout and training injury free. The class will also focus on building a strong core (which is critical for our posture and everyday functional movement) and dedicate some time to stretching (which is always a great release for the body and the mind). 02.01.2022 Blowing bubbles when swimming is an important part of learn to swim as it helps you learn breath control and progress their swimming abilities. Getting used to blowing bubbles with your face in the water can be hard at first, but with practice it becomes easy and swimming even better. Practice at home in the bath to improve on your bubbles and feel confident when returning to swimming lessons! Here are some fun games and tips to help with getting used to blowing your bubbles ...in the water! 1. Practice with your chin in the water, and slowly place more of your face in the water. This helps you get more comfortable with the feel of the water on your face! 2. Get some toys and make them swim by blowing bubbles! This is heaps of fun for young kids and helps build their confidence when blowing bubbles. 3. Talk to some fish! Get your child to talk to the fish in the water by blowing bubbles.
