22.01.2022 Return to sport after a period of inactivity. We thought we would kick start the new year by sharing our tips for starting or returning to exercise safely after the holiday period! Our tips: Start slowly or at a lower intensity! Often, we see people rush into exercise, with minimal or no previous experience with their new year resolution of getting fit. We suggest if you are just starting out with a new type of fitness, to perform 3 sessions per w...eek with rest or walk days between! Your exercise regime should include a good warm-up and a combination of cardio, strength, and flexibility! Ease into exercise gradually, particularly high-intensity or high-impact. You may feel ok at the time of exercise, however if you overdo it you may end up waddling for the next 3 days because of sore muscles and increase the risk of injury! Research shows that training load should increase by no more than 10% per week. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact Healthwise Physio! See more

Not to mention your mental health! Other benefits of exercise include lowering your blood pressure, improving heart health, improving joint stiffness and pain, and improving sleep quality! So many benefits and yet there are still a lot of people who do not exercise on a regular basis. Many medical and physica...l conditions can be improved by adding exercise into your routine! The current guidelines recommend exercising at least 3-5 times per week, whether that be walking, gym, bootcamp or incidental exercise like paddle boarding or kayaking! Why not try to improve your health today! If you are suffering from an injury or pain that is preventing you from exercising, feel free to contact our friendly staff at Healthwise Physio on 40954 555 so we can help get you back to your best you! #Benefitsofexercise #Improveyourhealth #Yourhealthourfocus #Healthwisephysio #Tablelandsphysios See more

09.01.2022 Exciting news!!!! Our physiotherapist Shae is pregnant So.. we thought it would be fitting to run a pregnancy-related Facebook series. Part 1 - Diastasis/abdominal muscle separation - What is it?... Rectus diastasis is the muscle separation of the rectus abdominis or the 6 pack muscles which meet at the mid-line of your stomach. Rectus diastasis is common during pregnancy and post-partum (however this condition is not limited to pregnancy and can often affect babies and men). Common symptoms Noticeable ‘gapping’ of the 6 pack muscle Abdominal weakness Lower Back pain Pelvic floor problems Constipation Bloating Poor posture Doming or bulging of the stomach when performing activities such as a sit up. How do I assess muscle separation? It is recommended to seek a professional opinion if you think you may have muscle separation. However, you can perform a quick self-check at home. Stay tuned for the next post to find out how to perform a self-assessment at home. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Healthwise Physio for advice. #yourhealthourfocus #pregnancyseries #rectusdiastase #athertonphysiotherapists #healthwisephysio #womenshealth

09.01.2022 Pregnancy Series Part 3. Tips on how to avoid/manage Rectus diastasis/abdominal muscle separation during pregnancy Avoid heavy/repetitive lifting (with incorrect abdominal recruitment) Avoid intense abdominal workouts (with incorrect abdominal recruitment) ... Monitor for signs of abdominal doming/coning/bulging during day to day tasks or during exercise Speak to a health professional about a specific strengthening exercise program Learn how to correctly recruit the deep core system Active the deep core system during day to day tasks like getting out of bed (avoid sitting straight up) Avoid ‘bracing’ of the abdominals during day to day tasks *note: core workouts are still fine if you can correctly engage the deep core system and have no signs of coning/doming The good news is that a lot of healing naturally occurs within the first 6-12 weeks post-partum, however 32% of women continue to have a muscle separation at 12 months post-partum. If you have any questions in regards to muscle separation, contact Healthwise Physio today. #yourhealthourfocus #athertonphysios #healthwisephysio #pregnancytips See more

07.01.2022 Ankle Instability - Have you ever badly sprained your ankle? Did you know that ankle sprains make up 25% of all sports-related injuries? Often when you sprain your ankle, one or more of your ligaments are stretched or potentially torn. Many people do not seek advice or treatment after an ankle roll as most sprains will often improve within 4-6 weeks without treatment. A torn ankle ligament however will often heal in a stretched position which may reduce the stability of your... ankle and lead to recurrent ankle sprains. As physiotherapists, we highly recommend seeking advice regarding ankle sprains to prevent future problems as an unstable ankle can often lead to knee, hip, or lower back pain. Our physiotherapists are trained in assessing the stability of your ankle and will develop an individualised rehabilitation program for you involving balance, proprioception, and strength to help recover to the best you! If you have any questions about your ongoing ankle instability, feel free to call Healthwise Physio on 40954 555. #Anklesprain #Physiotreatment #yourhealthourfocus #Healthwisephysio #Tablelandsphysios

04.01.2022 Do you suffer from heel Pain? Your Achilles tendon attaches the calf muscle to the heel bone (calcaneum) and is a common site for what we call a tendinopathy or tendinitis. A tendinopathy or tendinitis refers to degenerative changes to the tendon which are often caused by overload, for example a sudden increase or change in exercise or activity. Other causes of achilles tendinopathy include incorrect footwear or biomechanics with walking or running. Often your heel pain is wo...rse first thing in the morning or after a period of rest and generally warms up/feels better once you start moving. Your heel may ache once you have cooled down. The good news is that when caught early, achilles tendinopathies are generally quite easy to manage with hands on treatment, activity modification, advice regarding shoes or biomechanics and a strengthening program specifically to strengthen the achilles tendon. Sick of suffering from heel pain? Call Healthwise Physio to see one of our friendly physiotherapists on 40954 555. #Heelpain #Achillestendinitis #Physiotreatment #Yourhealthourfocus #Healthwisephysio #Tablelandsphysios
