18.01.2022 If you've ever set yourself a fitness goal and then been totally shattered because you had to change or abandon the goal this may be a helpful article for you. Setting ourselves goals can bring a sense of excitement, passion and purpose to our lives, but unfortunately can also fuel rigidity, obsessive striving, and self-criticism. Do you immediately think What’s next? when you achieve a goal, rather than revel in the achievement? Have you been caught up in focusing on wha...t you could still improve on, without ever celebrating how far you’ve come? When you don’t achieve a goal, do you spiral into self-criticism and feelings of failure? Is your self-worth precariously tied to your achievements? How can we enjoy the sense of purpose goal setting brings without becoming trapped in a ‘be more, do more’ ethos? How to experience the benefits of goal setting without riding a self-esteem rollercoaster...

17.01.2022 The way you feel about your body has far reaching impacts on your quality of life. It can affect your eating, your physical activity, your relationships, your career, and your physical and emotional wellbeing. 17.01.2022 Motivational memes inspire us to 'hustle' and 'be more, do more'. Social media posts tell us just how much everyone is doing and achieving. And when asked how we are, we answer "Busy". Busy is worn as a badge of honour and it's creating pressure to keep doing more and more. Sure, it’s inspiring to think of leading a big, juicy, passionate life filled with purpose, love and happiness, but what if ‘being more’ and ‘doing more’ is not the way to find it? Too many of us are exhau...sted to the bone. Is being perpetually overwhelmed and exhausted helping us live the kind of life we want? This may be an uncomfortable read, but an important one. - Jodie | Jodie Arnot Counselling

07.01.2022 This thought popped into my head after a client stated firmly that she had to be a lighter weight to be in a healthy body. Unfortunately, somewhere along the ...way, someone decided body weight should be used as a key measure of health - despite it being a crap measure of health. For example, our society is so convinced weight is major determinant, that at a certain weight you’re considered to have a disease, even if your blood tests are fine and you have no health issues! Health encompasses so much more than just our physical form. I am just going to scratch the surface here with what health involves, it would take many more words than I have time for now to adequately describe health. Psychological health - ability to cope with normal stressors of life and contribute to community Social health - satisfying interpersonal relationships Physical health - energy levels, sleep, mobility, fitness, physiology and metabolism Spiritual health - your values, beliefs, principles, morals and for some, religious faith Note: you do not need all of these, or to excel at these to have health, they are also fluid and will look different to different people. So why is body weight constantly used as a measure of health when it doesn't take into account the above factors? A: Body weight is easy to measure and anyone can do it. It's "nice and neat", whereas measuring the many other aspects of health are not nice and neat, and there's no simple way to put people into a box (such as a BMI category). It’s also partly because it’s what we’ve always done without stopping to question why. It’s time to start questioning why. The crazy thing is, that aside from body weight telling us very little about a person's actual health, focusing on body weight is often done at the expense of the other many aspects of health. How many people experience better health after years of trying to reduce their weight? Zoe Nicholson - Love What You Eat Dietitian
