25.01.2022 Today we look at Sipaahs, the individual serve straws which flavour milk as your kids slurp it up. They come in 15 different flavours, including Candy Cane, Hello Marshmallow and Lamington Dream and I have to admit, they are pretty yummy. With a 4.5 star health rating, 1/2 a tspn sugar per serve and school canteen approval, they seem like a good idea but it's important to consider your child's total sugar intake as free sugars can really add up in processed foods. If your chi...ld is not keen on milk, these can be a great way to get them drinking it, as it's a great source of calcium which is readily available to the body (and these straws can be used with calcium fortified plant based alternatives too) but if your kids happily drink plain milk, is it worth introducing yet another processed food into their diet with additional free sugars (and yet another thing they can nag you to buy at the supermarket)? A good alternative for kids who struggle to drink milk is home-made fruit based smoothies which also contain the fibre, vitamins and minerals that come with eating whole fruit. The verdict: the main ingredient in these straws is sugar, so you have to question their nutritional value, even though the sugar content per serve may seem low. See more

24.01.2022 Baked beans, good for your heart... but be sure to check the salt content! Baked beans are a great go-to for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They are high in iron, protein and fibre and half a cup counts as a serve of vegetables... plus kids love them! Try adding diced capsicum, Mexican spices and serve in a jacket potato with a little cheese on top for a satisfying, super-fast dinner or lunch. Go for varieties with less than 250 mg sodium per 100 g.

21.01.2022 Please like and share. Are you expecting a baby and in your last trimester of pregnancy or a new mother of an infant <6 months? If so, I would love to talk to you for an hour or so about breastfeeding apps if they are something that you are already using or think you might use. You don't need to be breastfeeding to participate. Interviews will be held at Curtin or Cockburn Integrated Health.

20.01.2022 Syringe feeding can be a great way to get some colostrum to your baby if they can't feed straight after birth for any reason. It is not widely promoted in hospitals who are often understaffed and time pressed, which is why it is great to arm yourself with as much info as you can before your baby arrives!! Ask your health care provider about expressing and freezing your colostrum prior to birth in case you can't breastfeed at birth for any reason. It can be a saviour!! http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au//moms-raw-postpartum-phot

18.01.2022 An interesting article about 'sugar highs' from the Sydney Morning Herald. Something to be cognisant of is the flavour and colour which is often an inherent part of these kinds of treats, which have been linked to hyperactive behaviour. http://www.smh.com.au//ever-wondered-if-sugar-makes-you-hy

08.01.2022 Have you tried everything to get your kids to eat more vegetables? Try this! Serve veggies 15 minutes before the rest of dinner as an 'entree'... That way, they aren't as distracted by everything else on their plate and can pick while they wait. It's AMAZING what kids will eat when they are hungry...

08.01.2022 This awesome photo series depicting school lunches around the world is a suggestion that our notion about kids not liking or eating vegetables is socially constructed and perhaps, unfounded. https://brightside.me//what-school-lunch-looks-like-aroun/
