25.01.2022 READING, WATCHING, LEARNING: I've also always considered myself to have a brown thumb as pretty much every plant I've ever owned has died... so even though I've wanted to have a veggie garden and flourishing plants.. I've always put it off... however like many people during the CoVid restrictions; I decided it was time! Time to plant a veggie garden and add to what was a very dismal looking plant collection... I've been googling and reading everything I can find on the types ...of plants I have and how to grow things and then a couple of weeks ago I came across @gardeningaustralia (which has apparently been around for over 30 years mind you!) OMG! I love this show and have literally been binge watching as many episodes as I can on my computer every day for the last few weeks... I'm learning so much AND my brown thumb is getting greener! Small changes.... live plants!! #gardening #veggiepatch #growyourown #greenthumb #bingewatching #learning #smallchangesbigimpact

23.01.2022 There are so so many small changes you can make and remember lots of small changes add up to a big impact! You don't have to do it all at once but you do have to do it! What change will you make today?

23.01.2022 I recently answered some questions about reducing plastic waste for the August Baileux newsletter... thankful for the opportunity to spread my message...check it out here... https://www.baileux.com.au//how-to-reduce-plastic-waste-i/

22.01.2022 Wise words... without food, air and water we have nothing... and yet still people don't take action to defend it... one day it will be too late...

22.01.2022 Covid19 has bought with it so many negatives is so many areas of life...in the environmental sector; undoubtly the biggest negative I've noticed is the massive resurgence of single use plastics at a time when we were finally seeing a growing awareness of their impact on the environment and even a reduction in some usage... but this is not a post about that. This is a positive post! A 'better choice' that has been on my radar for awhile but I was always 'too busy' to get aroun...d to doing (coupled with the fact that in the past my thumbs have proven to be more brown than green ) was to start a veggie garden. Spending more time at home has given me the opportunity to get my veggie beds going and after much impatience (definitely not an instant gratification project!) we finally have harvested our lettuces and have capsicums, tomatoes, broccoli, pumpkin and peas growing in leaps and bounds! We have cauliflower in too... the plants have grown massive... but no sign of an actual cauliflower yet... but all in all we have been more successful than not... which makes me very happy. Is there a better choice change you've been able to make BECAUSE of Covid19? Let me know!

21.01.2022 Product Spotlight: Aussie Bread Bags! Available from the BeeGood Wax Wraps stall at the Greater Whitsunday Farmers' Market this morning (23 Sep 20) In any given week, 11 million Australians buy a loaf of bread, with over 1 million plastic bread bags being thrown away EVERY SINGLE DAY!! ... Aussie Bread Bags are a great alternative to plastic bread bags and are made from thick cotton calico with a cotton drawstring. The bags have a gusseted base and reinforced stitching making them both sturdy and functional. (The gusseted base means they also double as great carry bags for your fruit and veggies - just the right size and they won't fall over!) Freezer safe and machine washable the bags are large enough to hold a standard loaf to most sourdoughs, viennas and high loaves from the bakery, farmers markets or straight from your oven. Bags measure approximately 30cm x 14cm. While the bags won’t extend the natural shelf life of your bread, they won't allow moulding to occur (as plastic does) because the fabric lets the bread breathe so even if you don't get around to eating it all before the bread starts to stale (there's five of us so that very rarely happens in our house!) you can still use the bread for toast or toasted sandwiches. Hint: Bread stays fresher longer if kept unsliced and cut as needed. Place the cut end towards the gusseted base and stand the bag. 100% Australian owned and made. A small family owned business in Avoca Beach NSW, mum of three young boys, creator and founder Holly is on a mission to replace 1 million plastic bread bags with the reusable Aussie Bread Bag by 2024. While the bags are super long lasting (think years and years) they are also home compostable at the end of their life which gets a big from me! $12.95 each Also available at Fleabags & Co in Marian or online at www.healthycleanandgreen.com.au/shop #Aussiebreadbags #multipurpose #reusable #betterchoice #bread #smallchangedbigimpact

20.01.2022 From the coffee you buy on the way to work to the kitchen sponge you buy for home, EVERY decision you make has a consequence for the planet. Are you helping to destroy it or save it?

19.01.2022 It's all about choices...

19.01.2022 Love my visits to SOUL Food Market... I've been shopping here for a few years now and deciding to shop at a bulk food store for as much as possible was the quickest and easiest way to cut down on the amount of packaging that my family was throwing away... For the record 'away' for me includes landfill, recycling or redcycle! I feel just as bad putting something in the redcycle (soft plastic recycling) as I do throwing something in the landfill bin because once it leaves my h...ouse I can't guarantee that it is going to be recycled and if you've followed my page for awhile, you will know that I don't think recycling is all that it's marketed to be anyway. My latest package free haul from Soul Food included: rice, pasta, sugar, breadcrumbs, tapioca (as a cornflour replacement), oats, nuts, tea leaves, cooking oil and dishwasher powder

18.01.2022 Know someone that buys WGAC toilet paper? Well, do I have a conversation starter for you! Ask them where they buy it from and if they are buying it direct from WGAC you need to let them know these two things:... 1. Buying it from Healthy Clean and Green will save them between $8 and $12! Most people think that skipping the middleman (that’s me ) will be cheaper, HOWEVER, currently WGAC charges $8 delivery into the Mackay region. That means, direct from WGAC, a carton of premium becomes $68 and a carton of recycled becomes $60. Healthy Clean and Green sources pallets of toilet paper from WGAC and absorbs the delivery fee through the wholesale pricing which means we can sell cartons for $60 (Premium) and $48 (Recycled) AND we deliver free in the Mackay area 2. And most importantly in my opinion (but put second because EVERYONE likes to save money ) purchasing through Healthy Clean and Green helps to reduce your carbon footprint! If over the course of a month 10 people individually purchase a carton of toilet paper from WGAC there is a good chance that those cartons will travel from the company to Mackay in 10 different trucks, however, because Healthy Clean and Green purchases pallets, we get a LOT of cartons transported in one go; lowering the overall carbon footprint. So for the sake of the environment and your hip pocket, I encourage you all to get chatting about toilet paper today! (And of course.. if you come across someone who DOESN'T currently use WGAC toilet paper you should definitely have a friendly better choice chat with them too!! ;) ) #Toiletpaper #WGAC #conversationstarter #betterchoices #smallchangesbigimpact

17.01.2022 Something to think about...

17.01.2022 Do you shop aimlessly or consider your purchases carefully? Be a conscious consumer and vote with your wallet... as consumers we are much more powerful than we realise.

16.01.2022 FIGHT FOR PLANET A: OUR CLIMATE CHALLENGE We are two episodes in on the three part series made by the team behind War on Waste, and hosted by Craig Reucassel. Fight for Planet A Our Climate Challenge explores how we can all reduce our individual and collective carbon emissions and aims to empower and motivate Australians to take action on climate change.... To be honest I feel like it is a little 'rushed', only fleetingly touching the topic - literally each episode could easily go for 2 or 3 hours and so far I've been left with a lengthy list of questions each week! That said; Craig's easy to digest presenting has given me a better understanding on some things and I have picked up a couple of things to implement at home. Have you been watching? What do you think? Missed it but want to catch up? Jump onto ABC iView website. The final episode airs on Tuesday 25 August on ABC at 8pm #waronwaste #fightforplaneta #abc #tunein #climatechange #bethechange #leadbyexample #starttoday #smallchangesbigimpact

15.01.2022 I absolutely love coming together with like minded people, having great discussions, educating and being educated and Miss Almost 12 and I had a great morning at Mackay Harbour yesterday for the Reef Catchments and Conservation Volunteers Australia Community Day of Action. With a beach cleanup, bee hotel making workshop, marine debris ‘art’ station, beeswax wrap making workshop, Auscan Worm Farms presentation, information stalls and displays from Pioneer Catchment & Landcare Group Inc., Mackay and District Turtle Watch, Australian Wildlife Rescue Service and the Healthy Clean and Green plastic free better choice product stall there was something for everyone! It always lifts my spirits and buoys me on to see that I’m not alone on my mission to make the world a better place....

15.01.2022 Everything you do, everything you purchase has a consequence... everything... just by thinking before doing and by making a few simple changes you will easily become part of the solution instead of the pollution!

09.01.2022 13 April 2021- International Plant Appreciation Day Here's me with my beautiful boy Harvey and some of my favourite house plants... I'm trying to tell him about plant appreciation day and the difference between a hydro and soil plant... but he doesn't really care and is less than impressed that the plants are getting so much attention today! I only started growing plants in water (hydro) in the last 12 months and have found it to be easy and less messy with no 'guessing' ...what's going on underneath the soil... do you have any plants in water? I'd love to see a pic of you with your favourite plant (or plants - sometimes it's hard to just have one!) be it in hydro or soil so post in the comments below.. and have a happy international plant day!!

09.01.2022 Following on from yesterday’s post & considering the bizarre year it’s been I have a couple more gift giving ideas to mention Whether it is due to CoVid restrictions, because you’ve been busy at work or because the kids have been a handful; when was the last time that you spent some quality time with your loved ones? Why not spend some time with the person who’s been missing you tie a bow around yourself & ‘be the gift’! Organize a babysitter so you can have a date & som...e quality time with your significant other (even if you don’t have kids, you should do this) Go to a restaurant or on a picnic ; anywhere you can just be together, no distractions, so you can have an uninterrupted conversation, reconnect & enjoy each other’s company. How about gifting your kids a date? Kids of all ages are eager for some one on one time with mum or dad & again you could spend some money or not. I could take Miss 11 out for a pedicure, lunch and a movie which she would love but she would also be just as happy if I got rid of the boys, turned off my computer and had a girlie day at home with her board games, baking, movie of her choice, painting our fingernails. Mr 14 would love my husband to take him fishing, watch him do scooter tricks for an hour or take him on a boys only camping trip. There’s no denying that it's been a tough year & the gift of support could be just what someone needs right now. This could be physical, emotional or financial. Put together a fruit and vegetable box, grocery hamper or treat tub (even if they’re not doing it tough financially, I think this is a practical gift that would always be appreciated!), pay a bill for them, do some handyman work for them or pay for some repairs they need done. Cook some meals for their freezer. Mow their lawn for a month or organise someone to do it. Deliver a batch of Christmas baking. Babysit (think of the friend who has been in lock down with kids take them to the park for a few hours so she can soak in the tub, read a book and enjoy a cup of tea on her own physical and emotional support that doesn’t cost a cent) Think about what that person really needs right now...

09.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY to August 2018 when I was privileged to be a part of something amazing... I can't believe it was 2 years ago already and these kids would now be 10 & 11. 06.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY: November 2017... Wow! Almost three years ago now! So many of the people in attendance that day have now become fabulous customers making better choices on a weekly basis which I'm utterly grateful for. I didn't actually get any photos on the day, the one attached is from six months later when the group purchased a supply of reusable bamboo plates and cups to use at their events. "Feeling grateful and honoroued to have been the guest speaker at the Pioneer C...atchment & Landcare Group Inc. Annual General Meeting yesterday afternoon... sharing scary facts and figures, raising awareness, suggesting solutions and showing off some of the Healthy Clean & Green product range with an amazing group of volunteers who already do so much for the environment, not just in their own homes, but out in the community too. Was wonderful to be able to meet, mingle and chat with so many like minded people in the one location!" See more

05.01.2022 If EVERYONE worked on doing better in their own home, neighborhood, town... the planet would be a very different place...

05.01.2022 Keep Australia Beautiful Week is held to raise awareness about the simple things we can all do in our daily lives to reduce our impact on the environment and encourage action and it starts tomorrow, Monday 17 August. Established by Dame Phyllis Frost in 1968, the Keep Australia Beautiful Network (KAB) has over 50 years of experience in engaging Australians to care for their local environments and is recognised as Australia’s independent litter prevention thought and practice... leader, for a litter free and sustainable Australia. KAB Programs include: Tidy Towns, Clean Beaches, Sustainable Cities, National Litter Index, Eco-Schools, Adopt a Patch, and Keep Australia Beautiful Week. To be honest, the above paragraph doesn't inspire me; instead it makes me sad. It's the type of thing I read that makes me question why I bother with my healthy, clean and green, low waste, better choices journey....Going for over 50 years and with over half a dozen different programs.... AND STILL THERE IS LITTER EVERYWHERE! It actually makes me so sad that I don't even have the oomph to jump on my soapbox today... From the Keep Australia Beautiful website: "Protecting ourselves from the spread of COVID-19 has led to drastic changes to the way we live from staying at home more to increasing our hygiene practices. However, there are some unintended consequences of this new lifestyle, especially when it comes to the waste we’re producing. Items like single-use food and beverage containers, face masks, hand sanitizer and gloves are in high demand. All with the potential to end up as litter in our beautiful country. The good news is, we believe we can all work towards a litter-free Australia from the comfort of our homes with some simple tips to prevent rubbish ending up in the environment." Ok, so that last paragraph riles me up enough to put at least one foot up on my soapbox! 50 years working towards reducing litter and they think a few simple tips this week is going to make a difference? I strongly encourage REDUCING waste altogether and I get that hints and tips in this area are needed because if you don't know there's a better choice then you don't know... but for heavens sake... EVERYBODY (young and old) should know that if you do have rubbish then in needs to go in a bin (preferably the right bin) and not on the ground!! Please note, I am not in anyway meaning to dis the Keep Australia Beautiful initiative... at least they are actively trying to make a difference... I'm just really frustrated! Grrr! P.S. If you see any litter when you're out and about... please pick it up...

04.01.2022 I love this so much... so simply but so true....

02.01.2022 To me reducing our 'waste' recycling like packaging, single use plastics and takeaway coffee cups is just as important as reducing our landfill.... because you can't guarantee that what you send for recycling actually gets recycled!

02.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY: December 2017 Three years since Santa first saw the better choice products that we bring to locals as conveniently and affordable as possible. Pretty sure we'll make the nice list again this year! "Santa stopped by and gave our eco friendly, better choice Christmas Gift Packs and Naughty & Nice Christmas Toilet Paper the thumbs up at the Marian Markets this morning! He said our eco-friendly stall guarantees us a spot on his nice list..."

01.01.2022 READING, WATCHING, LEARNING: I laughed, I cried... then I laughed... and then I cried again! The Biggest Little Farm follows John & Molly Chester over eight years as they leave their careers in LA and work to turn an almost desolate 200 acres of land into a thriving, organic and sustainable farm just an hour out of the city. ... A testament to the immense complexity of nature, this award winning documentary is inspiring, motivating, educational, funny and sad... 90 minutes of thoroughly recommended viewing for all ages. Have you seen it? What did you think? #thebiggestlittlefarm #readingwatchinglearning #regenerativefarming #sustainable #emmathepig #inspirational #educational #hardwork #betterchoices

01.01.2022 It's time for us all to be more aware so we can make better choices... Where is the stuff you're 'throwing away' going? How full is your wheelie bin each week? What can you do to reduce your waste?

01.01.2022 24 September - World Gorilla Day ; an annual event celebrating gorillas and empowering global communities to take action for gorilla conservation. While there are days to raise awareness and conservation for many of the worlds endangered animals (all just as important as each other) World Gorilla Day really resonates with me and while there are four sub species of gorillas (Western Lowland, Eastern Lowland, Mountain and Cross River) it is the Mountain Gorilla that has captiv...ated my for decades. Mountain gorillas are found in just two isolated groups one in the Virunga volcanoes spanning the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and one in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. These magnificent animals are some of our closest relatives yet sadly WE are their biggest threat. Due to poaching, habitat loss, disease transmission and war all from humans only about 880 Mountain Gorillas remain. In saying that though, (and while all of those human threats are still happening) the conservation of the Mountain Gorilla is one that with a lot of hard and continued work is a conservation that is kind of a success story, and it would be remiss of me not to mention that thanks to gorilla conservation programs, very strict gorilla tourism programs and teams of people committed (and often threatened, wounded and killed because of it) to their survival; the mountain gorilla is very slowly making a comeback from the all time low numbers of 1981 when there were just 242 left! It was in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in 1996 that I crouched on the ground just metres from the most majestic, magnificent, beautiful animal I had ever seen and quietly snapped his photo (attached) To anyone else its just a photo of a gorilla with no meaning, but it is one of my favourite photos and still to this day, 24 years later (OMG really?) something magical happens whenever I look at it and I’m instantly transported back to a moment in time (the sounds and smells, the heat, the complete and utter raw emotion) that was and still is; one of the best moments of my life... I'm off to reminisce now... Happy World Gorilla Day!!
