25.01.2022 Anyone else think farriers get just a little bit too attached to their hammers? #farrierproblems

25.01.2022 A crisp new set of stud holes for this lucky horse, ready to get back into work We prefer to use Royal Kerckhaert Horseshoe Factory shoes for this. Better quality, thicker steel makes for longer wear so you can get the most out of your studs!

23.01.2022 Tonto and Mickey Blue Eyes kept themselves (and everybody else) entertained in the heat yesterday

23.01.2022 We hope all the horses out there are feeling the love on their birthday What a lot of you may not know is that August 1st is also Ben’s birthday! (It’s almost as if he was destined to become a farrier). Happy birthday Ben!!

20.01.2022 When we heard Highfields Pioneer Village, Museum & Park Inc. had acquired a friend for their young draft horse, we were not expecting this tiny scruff ball to come whirring around the corner. Too cute for words!

19.01.2022 Our latest YouTube video is up! Ben and Greg forging letter openers from historic railway spikes! Remember to like and subscribe if you want to see more Benjamin Van Der Reest Greg Pitman

19.01.2022 Great to see little Clementine doing so well

18.01.2022 We have decided to start a YouTube channel to give our followers a better insight into what we do here at Healthy Hooves. Our first video is of Ben and Greg Pitman forging custom made corrective shoes - we managed to cut down hours of footage into a short video that we hope you will all enjoy. Be sure to like and subscribe to our channel! Cheers

17.01.2022 To all our followers. Definitely get in this summer and try some you wont regret it...

16.01.2022 Sharing the love - and the pie - but mostly the love

13.01.2022 For all followers of Healthy Hooves - we are now stocking our everyday essentials. These can be purchased either on Facebook or in person from our trailer (EFTPOS available). Our Healthy Hooves Tack Shop album will be continually updated with stock that is available.

10.01.2022 Building strong hooves takes at least six to twelve months.

09.01.2022 It can take a horse anywhere from 9 to 12 months to grow a complete new hoof. Although a single trim or shoeing can make obvious improvements to some feet, correcting long-term imbalances or weaknesses more often take months to become apparent without aggressive intervention. This horse has a problem many thoroughbreds suffer - his hooves tend to grow forward rather than down. This can put extra pressure on other structures in the hoof and leg (see angle of fetlock in this case). With regular shoeing, each time bringing the base of support further backward and increasing heel support, Ben was able to encourage the hooves to grow down rather than forward. In the most recent photo, the horse is shod with 2.5 degree wedges to improve the angle of the hooves further.

08.01.2022 What a difference a year makes! This horse suffers from a number of underlying problems: an autoimmune disease, mild pedal bone rotation and a tendency to develop seedy toe and abscesses. Through consistent therapeutic shoeing we have been able to get on top of these issues, resulting in healthier and stronger hoof growth and a sounder horse. #therapeuticshoeing #farrier #seedytoe #abscess #laminitis

07.01.2022 Ben and Greg are lucky enough to work alongside some of the best veterinary surgeons in Queensland. Here are some photos from last month in which they assisted with a keratoma removal surgery, creating and fitting a therapeutic shoe to aid in the horse's recovery.

05.01.2022 Scoop, trim, rasp, repeat... #farrierlife

05.01.2022 You know your road rules, and now’s your chance to prove it. The rider's signalling that they're having trouble controlling their horse. What must the driver of the orange car do?

03.01.2022 Just in: Rare footage of a farrier riding his own horse. The incident has been described to reporters as a ‘strange feeling’ for Ben who is not accustomed to being on top of a horse, but rather, under them...
