25.01.2022 With lockdown starting tonight Stacey and I decided to skip (pun intended) the gym and just use what we had laying around the house. I actually found it really enjoyable to mix up my training with some boxing and I think I’ll make this a habit It also helped give me a clearer head with all the news at the moment and kept me away from reaching for the cupboard instead. ... - Todd, Dietitian #exercise #work-out #boxing #lockdown #health
25.01.2022 What a great triathlon today at Bribie Island. @bribietri you have once again put on a fun and friendly event. Congratulations to all the new triathletes in the mix today and a big congratulations to all of those who walked away with a PB or a podium . I was lucky today to sneak away with a 3rd in my age group. Very chuffed. See you all at the next one #bribietri #healthylifestylesaustralia #tri #triathlons #sundayfun #fitness #friends #sun #beach

22.01.2022 Now that we know a bit more about Artificial Sweeteners, let's take a look at what some of the research has found Data suggests an association between Artificial Sweeteners and obesity: suggesting they alter normal bodily processes that are involved in metabolism and nutrient absorption, which influences body adiposity. Ingestion of Artificial Sweeteners may lead to impaired glucose regulation and impaired insulin tolerance.... Ingestion of Artificial Sweeteners activates your taste receptors and food reward pathway, ultimately leading to an increased appetite, food cravings and greater caloric consumption. Nonetheless, limitations exist in human studies as consumption patterns are based on dietary recall and evidence on the long-term consequences is yet to be established. There are also many studies linking sugar (in regular soft drinks) to the same conditions, so when it comes to deciding which option is better, neither are going to prove to be "healthier".
19.01.2022 Rather than running into the shops this morning for Boxing Day sales my family and I decided to run into @harrisavenueparkrun for a bit of Boxing Day fun and fitness . I was pleasantly surprised to see the organisers handing out no nasties sugar freezies icy stix which have no sugar, no artificial sweeteners and are Australian owned and made. You may be thinking that after a 5km run that it wouldn’t matter if it had some sugar in. However I thought it was brilliant as it cooled me down and now I can focus on a good quality carbohydrate choice with my breakfast instead for post run fuelling. Well done @harrisavenueparkrun #parkrun #dietitian #sportsdietitian #exercisephysiologist #nutrition #nonasties #healthylifestylesaustralia #healthychristmas #boxingday #runrunrun #outdoorissunny

14.01.2022 With so many yoghurt options on the market now, it can be confusing to know which one to choose So when should you opt for a high protein yoghurt such as Chobani Fit, Yopro plain or Farmers Union Protein? individuals with an active lifestyle... individuals struggling to reach their daily protein intake individuals with a higher protein requirement In comparing some of these yoghurts, you may notice that the higher protein yoghurts are actually less or only slightly more calories than their regular counterparts! So not only would you still be having a low calorie snack, but it would also give you more protein! Protein is important for: growth and repair of all body cells formation of enzymes & hormones normal functioning of muscles & nerves immune protection
12.01.2022 Each time I go to the grocery store I try to include one vegetable that I don’t regularly eat. 11.01.2022 I’ve got a few too many goals for 2021 so I think these two words sum it up nicely. Admittedly I can be rather notorious for keeping things in my head instead of writing them down This is going to be great to tick off the little things like scheduling exercise and meal prep which will make it easier to tick off the big things ... - Todd, Dietitian #planning #2021 #goals #health

09.01.2022 Educate posture... is there a best posture ? Today, we are looking at challenging our beliefs around pain and correct posture. I have seen a lot of people lately believing that if they slouch or slump, they are setting themselves up for future injury or pain. The current evidence (above) however does not support these claims and in fact states that there is NO single correct posture (Slater et al., 2019). Differences in posture and natural variations in spinal cur...vature are a fact of life and do not necessarily associate with pain. In some cases changes/education around posture can be beneficial in achieving a more bearable position, therefore assisting in pain management. Emphasis here is placed on the adoption of a more comfortable position rather than telling someone in pain to avoid a certain position, especially if it’s a position where they naturally feel comfortable. Here we are looking at minimising the fear response around certain postural positions. Fear avoidant behaviours are often associated with negative outcomes and can limit progress in an individual’s response to pain management. The less worried or anxious an individual is, the more potential of them having success in managing their pain. Any position that you stay in for extended periods of time can become uncomfortable, even if you are sitting upright, shoulders back and down, head down, core engaged..... Therefore, the best possible posture is your next one. Instead of avoiding positions or certain postures, we want to avoid being sedentary. Your body is made to move, be confident that yours is resilient and start your movement journey today! Image credit: @KWernilphysio #educate #posture #movementismedicine

03.01.2022 Stay tuned for 3 days of artificial sweeteners: what they are, the research findings and what it all means for human health Over the years, the topic of artificial sweeteners (AS) has been a controversial debate. Research is now suggesting links between the use of AS and negative health outcomes, however, a lack of longitudinal studies remains apparent. So what are the types of AS?... Splenda Equal NutraSweet Agave Xylitol What are some common sources of AS? Diet soft drinks Sugar-free energy drinks Tomato sauce and salad dressings Toppings and syrups Baked goods, jams, chewing gum Products labelled sugar-free, low-fat or calorie-free Difference between AS and natural sweeteners (NS): AS are chemically manufactured molecules that do not exist in nature, whereas, NS are naturally derived from fresh foods or plants Stevia (from Stevia Rebaudiana plant) Raw honey Maple syrup
