23.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be. The theme of NAIDOC week 2020 recognises First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65000 years. At this time it is equally important to recognise that; - most recent studies show that the life expectancy of Indigenous people is approximately 10 years less than non-Indigenous people... - Indigenous children are 7 times more likely than non-Indigenous children to need access to child protection services - Indigenous people are over 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes and/or long-term kidney disease than non-Indigenous people - Year 12 retention rates for Indigenous students are significantly lower than the non-Indigenous people - Indigenous people are 15 times more likely to be imprisoned vs non-Indigenous people This NAIDOC week, if you can, take some time to read up/educate yourself on some of the issues facing our First Nations people and how they came to be. Education is an important starting point towards positive change.

21.01.2022 In the lead up to International Men's Day on 19 November celebrating men as positive role models we'll be focusing our week on healthy relationships, healthy lives and providing support for one another. Let us start off with a beautiful ad that most of us have seen, a reflection of positive role modeling - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldZMh_LLsrM

21.01.2022 What's on at Healthy Living NT this week?

20.01.2022 This Thursday, November 19 is International Men's Day. This week we are going to bring attention to issues which impact the men in our lives. Starting with suicide; men are greater than 3 times more likely to commit suicide than women, with more than half of all suicides occurring between the ages of 30 and 59. Suicide in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is even more concerning, where the death rate by suicide is twice that of the non-ATSI population.... Suicide is real, every one of us will be impacted by it at some stage, and sadly the internal lonely struggle which often leads to suicide is unseen and unnoticeable. The people you love may seem okay, the men may put on a face of strength, but ask them if they are okay anyway. Reach out to the people you love and have a chat, pay attention to them, it may be enough to identify something could be wrong, and a starting point toward help and healing. If you or anyone you know is dealing with depression or just having a difficult time give Lifeline a call on 13 11 14.

17.01.2022 With the conclusion of International Men's Day let us have a little bit of a look at something that can help improve the lives of all people; accessible, safe and well lit bike and walking paths. We Ride Australia has released a great tool analysing the bike transport safety and accessibility in our major cities, sadly Darwin comes in second last in the scoring. To find out more and see how you may be able to help influence future safe active transport in the NT visit the website - http://www.weride.org.au/bta/

11.01.2022 Happy International Men's Day! This year the theme is 'making a difference for men and boys'. It will mean different things to different people. For me it means creating an environment which gives a great foundation for good health, positive two-way relationships and for men to contribute positively to the communities in which we choose to live. For others it may mean reducing the male suicide rate, finding a cure to prostate cancer, reducing the rate of men committing domest...ic violence offences, or it could simply mean putting a smile on the face of a male that you love. Whatever it is, let us celebrate the men we care about by reaching out to them for a chat, and let us reach out today. If you want to know more about International Men's Day visit the website - https://internationalmensday.com/

01.01.2022 Being great role models gives our boys the best chance of becoming great men. Providing support, love, care and leading by example are great ways of showing our sons how to respect themselves, and the people and the world around them. It is not always easy being a parent or a carer though, and thankfully there are some great support services available to NT families, including Parentline who are available from 8am to 10pm 7 days a week, contact them via 1300 30 1300.
