17.01.2022 Today is World Physiotherapy Day!! * The theme this year is all about the role that Physiotherapy has in respiratory illnesses and this year, more then ever, the role of physiotherapy is highlighted. * Physiotherapists are not only vital in the treatment of respiratory illnesses but they were also vital in its prevention. With recently published work led by researchers right here in Perth, we know that children with cerebral palsy have an increased risk of respiratory illn...ess - particularly children that are more dependent on physical assistance and equipment throughout the day. * The recommendations emphasise the role of prevention by being as physically active and fit as possible because we know that exercise and position changes stimulate deep breathing and promote stronger and effective coughs that clear the airways. * Our STRIDE program is about walking but we don't just see it as walking. For some children, it is the only safe and effective way to be upright, change their position and participate in physical activity. What might look simple enough is in fact research that is embedded into every session, every moment, setting up a context or fostering a perfect scenario that effectively promotes participation. * In work that was published by our friends and colleagues, (Willis et al 2018, BMC Pediatrics) it was found that the mechanisms (or in other words, the features of a program or intervention) that brought about outcomes in their pa...rticipation program were: * CHOICE, FUN, FRIENDS, SPECIALISED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS and TIME * That is, enabling adequate TIME to get the practice in whilst also the TIME to create a safe place to learn and develop relationships. This is important for parents, children, families and the health professionals involved. * These mechanisms are important to us and we strive to ensure that these mechanisms are woven into everything we do so that each and every person that comes through our doors have the best opportunity to participate. This adds another dimension to our unique model of intensive therapy - Therapy 369. * It is a uniquely special, calculated, proven model that is grounded in the latest research and evidence.
